Priority rules: CIP Rules, Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules

In order to assign the stereochemistry of a stereocenter, double bond or ring system, the priority, also called importance, of the groups attached to the stereocenter or double bond must first be determined. Priority is numerically assigned as 1, 2, 3 and 4 where smaller the number higher will be the priority. So, 1 has the highest priority and 4 has the lowest priority. Different rules for the determination of priority have been explained with examples.
