Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge. I just picked up a Nady RSM-2. It’s the exact same mic. Can you please tell me where you purchased your ribbon material? Thanks
Around 35 minutes you say it's probably a few hundred bucks, but it only costs €99/$89 on Thomann. I've been considering getting one of these (I'm based in France so I get free shipping), but I might save some more and get an Avantone CR-14 instead. In Europe that's 3.5x the price of the RB-500 though
Thanks, Manny! Would love to see how you tune the ribbon. I have 2 MXL R80 mics, one had a sagging ribbon and it was making noise and had a lower volume output. I opened it up and tightened the ribbon so the noise issue and lower level were fixed but I have no way to tune the mic. Would be nice if both my ribbons were matched. I want to use them as either drum overheads or room mics and I think it's a good idea for them to be matched? Anyway, thanks for this!
Honestly those ribbons should be replaced. I’ve done about four of those microphones I do like them in the very dark. I think it’s hard to match Ribbons because it’s not necessarily the ribbon but the transformers have to be perfectly matched. Then the ribbons have to be almost identical and that’s very hard to do. Those are 80s a cool good luck with getting those going..
I have the same gear Royer would use minus the actual measuring of the weight of ribbon. I do feel you can use your ears as well. Ribbon should sound full not thin or hollow. Visual of ribbon I think crucial so make sure it sits well and the tension flexible but not too tight or lax
@@mannysmiclocker Thanks for the response man! Just did it to both mics. It's a pain in the ass but I think I got it! That being said, one of the ribbons is not perfectly straight and when I blow on it it leans more to one of the sides than the other. It seems the problem is my slightly sloppy corrugation hahaha. It's not loose and it's not touching the sides, but it's also not very pretty looking. Will this be a problem? I did some quick tests and it seems to be fine but I don't know. I'm kinda new to this
If the plating sheds off the magnets, I have just added a coat of clear nail polish and that will keep all that metal plating from shedding further and crumbling.
@@legacyShredder1 we plan a wide variety of ribbons but until we make not sure. We plan 100% made here in Los Angeles and US. Maybe only the ribbons would be imported.
I will add I didn’t put back in that useless extra cage. Not feeling it was needed and most Cats that want to make sound better they remove even that silk screen. I keep as it does keep wind factor down blowing against ribbon.
@@bartpappas3236 I have and it’s clear as open . Because I don’t know how this cat will use ribbon I’ll be playing safe to keep on for sound pressure protection. this is pretty much a AEA R84 Witt different hard basket.
Wow, an undiscovered yt gem. You're a ribbon wizard. Thank you manny
Man, what a fantastic video! Thank you so much for letting us look over your shoulder. Learned a lot, cuz I didn't know anything at the start. Ha ha.
Thanks for sharing David and appreciated Brother!
Very cool vid brother.
Really good to see unedited the whole process and listening to your thoughts while you're doing it.

eBay you can get a few sheets . 2-5 recommended because it’s thicker. As you get better make 1.8 for more frequency response
@@mannysmiclocker Thank you. I will search for some.

Regarding ribbons big companies laser cut now but I can’t say they compare quality to the greats and newer boutique microphone companies .
I'm about to do this to this exact mic and your video is really helpful! Thanks a bunch! How do you tune the mic? Any tips? Cheers!

That’s a great idea! Notes taken next time. Gotta head to target ! Appreciated the advice Bart. Cool man
How far along are you in the process of developing your own mics?
Man,
Yes we are full steam ahead! We are about to manufacture our first model soon. When we have one ready to test I’ll for sure share here ;)

A lot of people remove the waffle plates, too. Have you tried it both ways?
