Love a good pile up with subscribers on the other end! Glad it worked out so well. I am liking your antenna set up.
Its pretty awesome. I'm really liking the PackTenna mini. Super easy to set up and it gets out.
That looked like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing with us. 73 and happy holidays!!
It was a blast for sure. Thanks for watching. 73
Great 👍🏼 video Mike! QRP works. I had a Buddipole kit setup in a worst case scenario deployment in my backyard, and my granddaughter at the time was 5 years old. On her first key up she hit Italy 🇮🇹 5 watts QRP with a 59 signal report using my Yaesu FT-817ND 😱!
Great video Mike! Great QRP QSO's. I hope to start POTA soon!
Thanks Rob. Just get out there soon or it's gonna be really cold! Winter and portable radio, for me, do not get along.
"QRP Works" he says!! Lol...I love it! Good video Mike. Nice contacts. It was great to see you having success with a mere 7 watts and on SSB Phone no less. And watching you having a blast doing it made this video as much fun as if I were making the contacts myself. I am fascinated with QRP, but it's either hot or it is not and the odds were in your favor today. Merry Christmas!
Yes the odds were definitely in my favor that day. I went out 2 days later and got zero contacts. Go figure. Merry Christmas to you.
Good work Mike! Glad to see QRP didn't disappoint! Your video is 59 into my office as well LOL! FB my friend!
Right on Red. We'll have to see if I can repeat these results.
Love your videos. Hopefully I'll get upgraded to General class in a couple weeks. You've got me really wanting to do QRP ops. Again, great video and thanks for taking the time to do them and share them and encourage other hams to get outside.
Thanks for watching. Good luck on the upgrade to General. It opens up a whole new world of amateur radio. 73
Fairly new subscriber. Really enjoyed your enthusiasm. Felt like I was right there with you.
Oh thanks Mel. Welcome to the channel.
I always get a kick out of seeing a HAM trying QRP for the first time. They always start with the mindset that without power it will never be heard. Then they discover not only is it heard but often it gets the same RST sent back from a station running 100 or a KW. If you ever want to fully understand the why behind this look up the "Inverse Square Law". I've been a QRP Op for 45 years and it still tickles me pink! Welcome to the amazing QRP world. 73
Mike you make it look so easy! My QRP work in Manhattan hasn’t been successful. Thanks for another great video. 73
I got lucky. I went out 2 days later and didn't get anything. That could also be the difference between going out on a Saturday vs Monday too though.
I don't think I have ever seen you have so much fun. And isn't that what this hobby is all about? Merry Christmas and tnx for all your videos. 73
Dude I cut out so many giddy parts. I just couldn't believe how well I was getting out. Absolutely a blast! Merry Christmas.
@@hamradiotube When one of your first contacts was Rob I laughed so hard I almost fell off the couch!
@@wushock92 Yeah he's gotten me first a couple times now.
good stuff , The look on your face when you said QRP . Priceless
It wasn't something I did much but alas, it works! Thanks for stopping by.
Mike, your videos are quality stuff. Relaxed, straight forward and informative. Thanks. N7KHH
Thanks Robert, I really appreciate that.
Proof positive there's hope that with the right antenna QRP transceivers can get out there! Thanks for the videos! Perhaps someday we'll have a QSO de N7MRF 73s.
Great work and great video, keep up QRP fun .
There will be more QRP in my future and on the channel. Stay tuned...
Really enjoyed the video....and inspiration for QRP
Thanks, it was more fun than I would have guessed.
Nice Video Ddude ! a lot of customers with only 7w well done !
Enjoyed the great video! I've got to kick it in gear and pass my General so I can get real HF privileges. Great location and looked like a lot of fun.
We’ll get on it. It’s just a really big book and a few hundred questions and a bunch of hours studying. Oh, and it opens you up to a whole different and wonderful experience in ham radio. Totally worth it. Then you will do like I did and want the rest of the privileges and get your extra.
nice lil radio there Mike, hope to hear you on winter field day. I'll be running a 1H with my WRC SOTA Special. 73 de W8MJL
Thanks Michael. I'll be out there with my club N8SL. We should be on 80, 40, and 20 at the very least. If you hear us, give us a call. 73
Super cool Mike, great amount of contacts..... well done! Oh and Merry Christmas 🎄 73 Glenn ZL1MY
It was very cool. I was not expecting to run a pileup with 7 watts! Merry Christmas to you.
I told you QRP works Mike! Only a few DB difference between 5 watts and 100 watts. You"ll start to love it now because you can make tons of contacts AND your battery will be MUCH smaller in the pack!
Merry Christmas from Pete, W8BBM.
Sometimes I need those few DB's but not that day! I've got some smaller batteries coming, and I may have a couple other qrp radios I'm going to be showing. Now if I could just make it warm again...
Man. You were killing it out there!!
The band Gods were nice to me that day for sure.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF I thought you must have called ahead to have the bands turned on. 🤣
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Ha, yeah, I know a guy!
That was a cool video!!!
Another great video. I've noticed the atmospheric conditions are improving. A few nights ago, I made a contact with a station in central Italy, with 8 watts SSB, using my Elad FDM Duo and a MFJ 10-40m EFHW antenna. I've also been tweaking my Transmit Bandwidth and that's been bearing fruit also. I've went from 300 by 3500 Hertz to 200 by 2700 Hertz. I'll with a better antenna or just a more advantageous set-up I think I can get an even better range. Cheers
Nice job. That bandwidth setting was too wide. You should be a lot better where you have it now.
@@hamradiotube Thank You.
Nice vid 👍
Great video Mike! I work QRP also. Every time I make a contact I feel like I am getting away with something. 8-)
Right?! After running 100 watts for the last couple years it just feels, not wrong, but different. In a good way.
Outstanding video. Shared!
Think about all the money you can save with this radio instead of a KX2.
Thanks Julian. I had thought about getting the KX2 at Dayton but I just got 2 more qrp radios that I'm gonna have some fun with on top of this one. I'm sure the KX2 is a way better radio overall but for the price I may not be able to justify it now.
@@hamradiotube outstanding stuff. Looking forward to seeing those videos 👍👍👍
Awesome!!!
Now just think about the weight savings of a kx2 🤣
Yeah, my wallet will be a lot lighter too!
Why sure it does! You may find like my that lighter and simpler can be habit forming. Nice video Mike.
I'm hoping so. I'm really liking the light weight part for sure.
Hey Mike nice video my self have a 891 and love the radio but I been thinking about going qrp as well my bag weighs to much
73s and merry Christmas
Well stay tuned. I just may have a couple more QRP radios to play with here.
Gotta love QRP!
This was the first time. I have a couple more QRP radios in the arsenal now too that I will be showing on the channel.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF I usually run my 817 for POTA activations. Always amazes me what contacts can be made with 5 watts
Great video I used to have this radio ailiunce hs1 Variant
Right on, thanks. I tried to get Retevis to send me one but Cherry ghosted me after I did a video for them for the RT-52. I guess I just wasn't good enough at reviewing DMR radios haha! 73 and Merry Christmas.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF Yes well good try anyway 73 mate and happy holidays
Good work Mike the link dipole could take out the tuner in the kit. Great location. HNY
Yes it could but then I wouldn't be able to set up at that beautiful location as it takes up way more land. Lots of hikers go through there too so I wouldn't want to have the dipole there.
I was watching those people behind you wondering if they were going to take a swim.
They actually got out on the ice. Not too smart this time of year. Would have been funny though.
Hey Mike! That's the real radio contacts. That's we so like the QRP activities. No need 100W or 1kW to get a lot of contacts. 5 or 7W are OK! Great video! HNY 2020 and 73, Paul
From the man himself!! Whats up Paul? Thanks so much for watching! Big fan of your channel. I've been rewatching all your videos since this and can't wait to get out and play more QRP. Hope to make a contact one day. 73
@@hamradiotube Oh thank you Mike! I am so happy that you like my videos 😉👍 We are waiting for the better WX. I can't wait for more QRP trips 😊 Keep up the good work Mike! 👍 73 and greetings from Slovakia! Hope to meet you once on the air!
Just got my RS-918 in the mail today. I'm currently charging up the internal battery and will give it a go on some regional nets later today. The menu system looks somewhat complex so there's probably a bit of a learning curve as the included manual is very sparse on info. Looking forward to doing some POTA activations with it from up here in British Columbia.
OH man you got the one with the internal battery, I'm jealous. The menus really aren't that difficult once you familiarize yourself with them. The original version of this radio is the MCHF developed by M0NKA, but my google search to his website for the manual doesn't seem to exist anymore. Curious. Either way, congrats on the new radio. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it.
That setup has great rcv ,
🤘@5:29 de N3QAM
I'm pretty stoked at how well it performed. You're RUclips famous now haha!
K8MRD RADIO STUFF you were my first and second 😂😂😂😂
Great video! I am new to HAM, just passed my Technician license last week. I am really interested in being mobile.
Better late to the comment than never. Congrats on passing your Tech thats awesome! Hope you are enjoying the hobby 7 months later. 73
What app are you using on the ipad for logging? I'm trying to find something that allows for quick entry for sota and pota activations.
I have same radio. I had to reset after firmware upgrade... It is receiving well but now my radio won't transmit. Completed the settings PA Bias etc.. but still no luck transmitting. Can you help please 🙏
Looks like that radio did very well!!! I have looked at those, but worried about quality. I have seen good reviews and I have seen bad reviews. May have to look further into one of those. 73 Juddie WD8WV
Yeah this was given to me from a friend. I'm not so sure I would just go and buy one of the Chinese ones. They are so hit or miss. You can buy an original MCHF from the guys that designed it (either as a kit, or pre-built) and know that you are getting a quality bit of kit. There is a link in the description. Last I checked though, they were sold out.
Nice!!!
Greetings from Rio de Janeiro

Hello hello
QRP FTW!
Looks like your in one of my S.O.T.A locations (swamps on the air)
Ha. I love being by the water and operating.
I like mine
Funny seeing your shock that QRP works. lol. During a recent contest, using 5w and a hobebrew 7 tap unun and piece of wire, I worked 34 states and 14 countries. Antenna starts out at 8 feet high. You should look for '80 EFHW & Multi tap UNUN part 1 of 3...' if you wanna see what you can do with a $3 toroid core and hunk of wire. Its crazy. You can work all bands with no tuner when using a multi tap UNUN. Near perfect match on all bands. And YES, you can actually make contatcs with 5w. Think about the S unit and the dB..... 73 OM
It was just so amazing that all those stations were coming back. I have never seen a pileup like that from anyone running QRP. I have a QRP EFHW for 80 that works on all the bands with a little touching up with the tuner. Mostly resonant on all of em but it's like 132' long. I've got plenty of antennas to play with and I have another one on the way. Cuz, you know, I need more haha!
Yep, my 80 efhw is about the same length. I'm not sure cuz I keep f'ing with it. haha. But yeah, it started out at 135 then I broke my leg in 2 places and tore tendons whilst trimming 4' off. I healed and it works great. Plus, it gave me something to play with while I couldn't walk all spring and summer. Awesome! That's where my multi tap unun was born: out of a life of agony. I like the unun cuz of the near-pefect match I get with no tuner at all. LOVE your vids! By far the most fun to watch and they're always interesting. Happy new year OM 73
Just went and looked up a MD operators call sign .... Looks like you worked Mr. POTA founder himself.
Well that's pretty cool. I feel I have worked him before. Can't remember the call though.
@@hamradiotube His call is W3AAX.
Keep the videos coming! 73
I have one I've used for POTA. Now that I have an FT891, the 918 is relegated to FT8, JS8 PSK and RTTY.
Yeah I hear ya. It's nice to have options and play with different radios and antennas and such though. Thanks for watching. 73
Hey mike I see I made your last contact. Always good to work you. QRP Rules!!!! 73 de KC2BPP
Thanks Harold. There is more to come. Stay tuned...
Great video, thanks. Which logging software are you using, please? Happy Christmas de G0GCQ 🎅🏻
Thanks John. I'm using an iPad mini with a bluetooth keyboard. The logging software is called HamLog. 73
K8MRD RADIO STUFF Cheers for that info 👍🏻 I will look at that software 😀
Satis longa vita for QRP :-) What are your thoughts on that little radio? 73, Stephan, DF6PA
So far I like it a lot. I have a couple other qrp radios that I will be showing on the channel as well. Too early to know which I like best.
And at the bottom of the Solar Cycle to boot!
I know right. Imagine when the bands aren’t dead. You won’t even have to call cq. They’ll just know.
Great video. What band were you on and what was the untuned SWR? I’m curious about the effect of the radials
I was on 40 meters. 7.285 I think. The radials make a huge difference. I did a video just on the antenna you can check out where I show that a little bit. The untuned swr is quite high as its a 9:1 unun designed to be that way so it can be tuned on multiple bands.
@@hamradiotube Thanks. I've seen it go as low as about 5:1 with a radial. That is still a fair bit of coax loss though. I was running 25ft of RG52. But, it works. I will try your solution for fan radials. Good idea.
Douglas Dreger that’s prob about it. Next time I go out I’ll try to remember to put it on the analyzer and check.
Mike the YT Star, what camera are you using for your outstanding vidoe on yt. maybe do a segment on your equipment.
It’s quite underwhelming I’m afraid. I’m filming with my iPhone. Audio is from a cheap wireless lav I picked up for about $100, and I edit with iMovie. Oh and I have a tripod. That’s it.
I would have laughed so hard if you had made a special "qrp" intro...like some hard compression or acoustic guitar lol
Hahaha! That would be funny. I may need to go back into the studio:)
Hey, GREAT video. Mind telling me which pc that is?
I need something that size for portable ops. Thank you in advance.
Its an iPad mini w/ a cheap bluetooth keyboard. Logging software is HamLog.
@@hamradiotube OMG thats AWESOME. LOL did not even notice.
Thanks man.
No prob. I get that question more than anything else. You’d think I would do a video on it.
@@hamradiotube I guess a video about all the gadgets you bring with you in field ops is in order. haha, Thanks again man, DE N2SAL hope to QSO with you sometimes, best 73.
I should turn down the 891 and go QRP ? Thanks Man !
Thats what I did when I first started going portable, but then I got a LiFePO4 battery and cranked up the power and never looked back.
That's what I do with my FT-891! Great radio for digital or CW! It has all the filters you need. I see some QRP guys saying its over kill due to the current drain on RX but with lithium batts these days its not an issue I think. I have 2 lithium 4ah mini bike batteries in my bag. They hold up fine. I use it for SOTA. I activate the summit on FT8 and usually have some battery power left for a QSO.
But it all depends on how much weight you can haul in your back pack. Here in Texas we have to carry more weight in water than equipment. Water is 8.6lbs a gallon. =]
WW5RM
If you hadn't said you were QRP, I wouldn't have know the difference! 73 - N1NUG
Nice. The bands were definitely in my favor that day. Thanks for the contact.
Can you tell me what computer you are using in the video?
It's an iPad mini with a bluetooth keyboard. Logging software is HamLog.
1.115 KHz doesn't receive AM signal, he start to receive at 2,5 Mhz when the color of the frequency is white?
What??
@@hamradiotube Riceve il segnale solo dopo 2,5 MHz? Come mai fa visualizzare anche frequenze dove non riceve? Così porta in confusione. Sono buone solo le frequenze di colore bianco?
Sad that You did not mention the original designer M0NKA of this Chinese nockoff. And Yes, many of this Chinese copy's show earlier or later issues. By the way, the original one You can order online on the website or M0NKA with superb build quality and the joke is, for a lower price!!
Good point. I just tweaked the description and added a link to his website to order. Thanks and 73
Haven't you heard. Life is to short for qrp. Nice job.
Haha! Thats why I've been running 100 watts but this was a pretty fun outing for sure.
Wow nice can some one link that QRP radio?
There are links in the description. I would get the original MCHF if I were you. The one I'm using is a clone and was given to me by a friend so I have no idea what seller it came from. I put a couple amazon links but I also put a disclaimer on them too. You just never know what you're gonna get with these Chinese manufacturers. Plus, they straight up stole the radio design/software from the European guys that developed it.
@@hamradiotube Thanks man I was not home looking at you on my phone so couldn't read the description.
QRP works great until it doesn’t. A long QSO will take many fades and complete drop outs. Fun in the field but not at home for ragchew.
No I would not do this at home. Long contacts can be hard with 100 watts sometimes too though.
I’ve had many a great QSO’s on 5 watts. The Propagation God’s have to be with you, but it works.
N1UFO/ Gabriel There is no god, only man.⚡️
I wish someone would send me one....😢
You never know.
Tiny radio, big attitude lol
It performed that day for sure. Thanks for watching.
