1. is an example of a movie kids saw with no knowledge it was a cartoon
2. is an example of the fact that nostalgia baiting didn't star recently and doesn't effect only the 80s and 90s
This film’s production history reminds me of the Live-Action Flintstones movie from 1994. Unlike Flintstones, this doesn’t get a sequel and it’s production doesn’t seem as troubled.
The fact that this movie, which had a very interesting and heart-warming story, got critically panned by critics everywhere. I guess some people aren't ready to re-experience the past through adaptations.
Either that or people just hate live action remakes of old cartoons by default. It's very unfortunate.

I loved this movie as a kid and I loved fat Albert. The movie is just boring I rewatched it shortly after Aaron Carters death. It’s not that critics are always wrong it’s just that Fat Albert maybe works better as a cartoon show
Fun fact: In France, The original Fat Albert actually removed the bit with Bill Cosby and switch it with someone else (I think it might have been because Bill Cosby wasn't well known outside of the U.S)

True but I don't think they want Bill Cosby profiting off it. Also, it's under Fox, which is under Disney so chances of a physical release are very slim

You know, even though the movie was panned and some things like Kenan having some problems with the suit, it's nice to hear a story about the development of a movie that didn't have a lot of problems
I watched this movie so much as a kid that it’s one of those rare movies I had on both VHS and DVD, I think it’s one of the better live action cartoon film adaptations released in the early 2000s, it’s funny, has a lot of heart, and Kenan Thompson was perfect for the role of Albert. It also has one of the most heartwarming/sad endings to any live action kids comedy film I’ve seen as you can see the hurt in the Cosby kids’ eyes that’s also helped by Richard Gibbs’ music for the scene, it makes me wish that one day the score could be released officially or unofficially.
That's so weird...I knew Kenan Thompson was always on SNL but I didn't know it was that early. I thought he was playing Fat Albert once he was fresh out of "Kenan And Kel". As for Kyla Pratt, here's another fun connection; the animators behind the film's cartoon segments are also the ones behind "The Proud Family".
This is still an enjoyable movie for me, i rewatched it for the first time since I was a kid recently and I just had the biggest grin on my face for most of it honestly also the animation was beautiful
Fat Albert Robertson will always be a good representation of people with a different race, along with Steve Urkel and Penny Proud. Also, the concept of a fictional character going into reality to help someone with his or her problems is a great one. This reminds me of DDLC's Monika...

I'm shocked the "Rocky And Bullwinkle" (which also included Kenan Thompson, funny enough) movie didn't include that fact.

I saw this movie two or three times as a kid (didn't own it myself, otherwise it likely would've been more), but I admittedly liked it. Never saw the original show though for the record
Not gonna lie, as a kid, I was terrified of this movie. Mainly due to the trailers showing Fart Albert jumping out of the TV. But, later a babysitter I had brought the movie with her to entertain me and my siblings and I adored the film ever since. But...having seen the film BEFORE seeing the actual TV show, I was so confused once seeing the latter. Like, where was Harold's afro and why were his eyes like that? Why did Bucky sound younger in the show than in the film? Why did Russell sound older in the show than in the film? Where was Doris and Danielle (why were Raven Symone and Kyla Pratt in everything together, anyway??)? And why were Rudy and the gang so mean in the show than they were in the film? Little me was so confused...
Raven and Kyla were marked together because at the time both the proud family and that's so Raven were very popular shows at the time.

When I was a kid, this was honestly my favorite movie ever for the longest time. I ended up studying film in college and I guess you could say my tastes evolved, but this is such a nostalgic movie I always go back to and I honestly believe it to be a genuinely sweet, funny movie. 'It says we come out on DBD'
When it came out, I was so surprised because not only did I not watch the show, I thought that it was just on the nostalgia train and was totally against watching it. However, throughout the years, I have watched bits and pieces and they were enjoyable! Not enough to get me to watch the movie from the beginning, but I could tell that the actors and the production of the movie wasn't just for a cash grab, but they actually enjoyed what they were doing. I won't watch it entirely just due to the connection with Cosby, but I am glad that the cast and crew was able to have a good time making memories while making it.
Fat Albert was a childhood fave before the Cosby Allegations. 😬

I owned a DVD of this movie when I was a kid and loved it. This was my very first introduction to fat Albert as a whole.

Jokes aside, I’ve never actually seen this movie, let alone know it was based on a cartoon.
I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was sick and couldn’t go to school. My mom was in the other room watching it and I decided to join her. Needless to say, I had a good time! (Pun entirely unintended)
...God, I forgot just how long Kenan has been on SNL. That fool been on there since I was 13.
After rewatching the movie several times, I can actually see the pros of the film.
• While not fully developed, the relationships between Fat Albert, Doris and Laurie is really good and touching. Though I still wish they developed them more.
• The character designs look nothing like the Filmation series, but the animation is to die for.
• The Fat Albert rap is cheesy, but it’s got a great beat. Plus, they did an updated version of the original theme song that sounds really cool.
• The ending is super touching and emotional.
• The casting choices were terrific.
The only real problem is the story. That whole "going into the real world thing" is pointless and doesn’t make any sense. The show is supposed to be grounded in reality and down-to-Earth. Going into the live action world makes everything redundant. Removing that aspect would make the story much easier to follow.
Come to think of it, it's kinda surprising that the movie didn't have a dark tone. The show have dealt with some pretty heavy topics; divorce, drugs, abuse, kidnapping, racism, crime, STD's, teen parenthood, you name it!! How the flip did this movie turn out so light-hearted?!
😭 Bruh, I remember this one episode about stealing - it had these funny segments but I kept getting more and more anxious out of fear for the characters.
I will be honest I dunno if future generations might see this movie because of the person involved with this

This movie was an underrated masterpiece. I loved how it broke the 4th walls, the story was awesome too. Furthermore, I also loved how the movie showed us that the cartoon characters are based of Bill Cosby's childhood friends. Despite the fact that Bill Cosby was an alleged sexual predator, I always loved Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids, no matter what.
This is the movie that introduced me to Fat Albert and to this day still one of my favorites

I immediately purchased as many Fat Albert cartoon DVDs as possible after watching the movie.
Its a little sad that I don't remember this movie. Like, I know i saw it but I wasn't impressed as a kid. Its one of those things where everyone in the movie had a blast but despite that the outcome wasn't as engaging. Honestly if it was a stage play, the chemistry may come out better
Something I like from this movie is how the animated sections look, like how it would look a newer series of Fat Albert

I was honestly surprised at how decent of a movie this was when I first saw it a few years back. Just like the cartoon it has plenty of charm and heart and surpasses it in a lot of ways. It sucks that Fat Albert likely won’t get anything else based on it made ever again for obvious reasons (I mean Bill’s character is literally Bill Cosby) since it’s that heart that makes it good.
One of the last films I got from blockbuster.
I won't lie, the movie is a low-tier guilty pleasure of mine.
Sure the story had misses than a game of 'Battleship', but the animation sequences & the characters' costumes were amazing (and the actors did a good job, even if some weren't portrayed as the original ones).
In fact, it inspired me to create a character called Ness.
Ness was basically a character that started off mute with faded colors and a lack of personality or gender traits (because was a scrapped character that prematurely & somehow was brought to life & managed to survive without turning into dust).
But once Ness went in the cartoon world with Fat Albert & friends, Ness gain a lot more color on them, their personality became visible, & gain a voice. And it's revealed that Ness is actually a girl appropriately named "Vanessa."
Which is fitting because her transformation was like that of a caterpillar to a butterfly (aka what Vanessa's name means).
I know it sounds crazy & Mary-Sue like, but I was following this movie's crazy rules of how everything works.
Put Tyler Perry on that list as a control freak I mean he wrote and rewrote everything he makes😂
Growing up, I watched the Fat Albert Movie before discovering the Tv show (ran from 1972-1985)and I absolutely loved both. Fat Albert never grew out of me even as an adult.
Unlike some folks, I don’t have an issue with the characters transitioning to live action. If the movie was mainly in cartoon or live action form, the characters would’ve still made it fun to watch. It was definitely made for the young demographic which was also the case with kids in the 70’s.
However, I do feel that there’s some minor things that we’re missing in the character development. Some noticeable, others not so much. For example, Bucky never had a lot of screen time (he and Mushmouth were the only ones not giving personal episodes in the show). Since the characters got to develop their personalities in the real world (ex: Dumb Donald became smart), maybe the film should’ve had Bucky pull a “Stefan” card and get more attention/popular.
The other being Rudy (My fav). They changed his personality completely without any buildup, though I don’t mind him being more well mannered and chivalrous. In the show, he’s known as the arrogant one , so perhaps the movie should’ve played with that more with Rudy if they’re already having the characters change in the real world.
Nevertheless Fat Albert ( show and movie) will always be part of my childhood. Lemme know What do you guys think 🙂

I thought this movie was OK. I thought kenan did a great job. I have it on DVD I mean I like it because I love movies where characters have fun

I didn't know how well people were having fun with the production. I watch the movie and watched the series when younger and j thought it was alright. It did have a good lesson in the end but I didn't feel as entertained by it. Year's after, I can see there is a bit more to appreciate with it but I need to remember Death of the Author to enjoy it.

How so?
As a fan of the original animated series, I disliked this movie... a lot... and the thing I hated the most about it was the whole "coming out of the TV into the real world" idea. The whole thing should've been set in Fat Albert's world, a live-action representation of an idealized, predominantly African-American ghetto neighborhood in Philadelphia at some indeterminate point in the mid-1970s. What they did added a layer to the story it not only didn't need, it crippled it. Watching the "Cosby Kids" follow Fat Albert around like a pack of lost sheep, then realize they were only "fictional characters in the real world" was beyond painful.

There wasn’t anything to discuss. All that happened was that they wanted animation, then they commissioned it. Because of that, I removed it from the final draft.

Not really no. It didn’t add anything to the story. I don’t want these videos to be just me listing names. Besides, according to Zwick, the live action production staff had very little involvement with the animation.

@@mediamementosofficial I have one fun fact about the animated segments and that’s they were animated by Warner Bros Animation, I’m not sure if it was done by their television/direct to video division or their feature animation division if it was the latter then it was one of last projects they did before they shut down the same year.
