This team is already too top heavy with older often injured players. This year is a perfect example of the gamble you take with that philosophy. LOWRY, I'M A FOOTBALL GUY and I was watching some film of Cam Ward (just to familiarize myself better with his abilities) and I began noticing his starting running back Damien Martinez almost immediately. Hallelujah! He is the short yardage back the 49ers have been looking for, and he's not being talked about a whole lot. He's 5' 11" and get this...241 pounds!!!! Immediately with that build, I'd say "fullback" but he's too fast and talented as a runner to be relegated to that role. This guy is more like David Montgomery + 10 pounds with better hands. He has great vision and quick feet and is dynamic in the screen game. I haven't seen him block in space, but he's good in pass protection. He's got a style similar to Cam Skattebo as a runner, but isn't getting the same hype (perhaps for good reason), but he's still awesome. He'd be a formidable goal line and short yardage back, and will probably be a Day 3 pick! Especially with Mason a RFA, I think drafting Martinez would be smart.

I like him, but if I were the 49ers, I would be looking more for a true Z receiver in this draft who can get separation and threaten vertically. Couple guys I've seen who I like that match that profile are Deion Burks from Oklahoma and Ricky White from UNLV. Burks is like a poor man's Zay Flowers but with a sturdier frame. 5' 11", 185 pounds. He's got great speed and quickness and is super feisty after the catch. Great hands and work ethic. Ricky White is 6' 1" 190. He's a burner with great awareness. He's gritty and super consistent. He's played X, slot, and Z, but he's a Z in the NFL. Plus he was really good on special teams. I watched an interview of him where he was saying how much he loved special teams and I just loved that.

Firing Schneider and hiring whomever the Niners target will not matter until Shanahan decides to actually spend significant time in practice getting better. Imagine hiring a new guy then coming to practice and not working on it all that much. Special teams has been a huge problem for a long time and it's 33% of the game. A good guy to ask would be Mooney Ward and ask him how the Chiefs practice special teams vs the Niners.

Everybody is missing the big picture here! Sorensen did much worse than the Special Teams coach Schneider. Yes, our special teams got beat on a few trick plays, but the real reason we were so bad is because of Moody. He is trash and wasn't replaced by Carlsson or other kickers and that I think is more of Shanahan's fault than Schneider's. It also has to do with the poor tackling that the defensive coach should teaching his players. We need the best possible Defensive Coordinator available to be competitive and it sure ain't Sorensen.
