My grandfather's house was slap bang in the middle of the tail-race. it had to be demolished. But the Government built a new and better house for my granddad and family. My granny had two small children and had to endure blastings and explosions until that happened.
Surely they could have thought of a way to redirect the fish around the turbines. Stop them further up river and have a ditch tunnel for them to swim down bypassing the turbines... also they do actually have fish pools where they raise fish and release them so it's not like it effected the eco system that much.
@maryflannery6805 Yeah and that's a town the size of sligo which is actually pretty good for when it was built, they did a great job on it at the time.
it will not be removed as they want it more than ever now ..they are very very short of electricty when the wind is not blowing ..two new turbines went in this spring .........so it will be around for another 100 years
Hydropower is a clean and sustainable source of energy, providing a constant supply. However, its primary advantage is not just energy production but the ability to regulate electricity generation. For example, during peak hours in the morning and evening, it can increase output by releasing more water, and when demand is low, it can reduce the flow. Without this flexibility, short-term activation of thermal power plants becomes necessary, which is far less environmentally friendly.
Interesting, we have an other Power project, which is approaching 100 years old here in NZ, it is behind the town of Shannon. wow!

Wrecked our river
Hopefully will be removed in the near future to let the Shannon and its eco system recover to its former glory.
If it only supplies 2% of electricity...

terrible for river connectivity and migratory fish. Somethings needs to be done!
