  • Mark Doty's storytelling power creates a heart-breaking narrative in this short, brilliant poem. "Brilliance" is from his collection My Alexandria, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 1993. In this Poetry Moment, Doty reads his work decades after he wrote it.
Chronicling the effects of the AIDS epidemic in the midst of homophobia and fear, My Alexandria was full of "humane and comforting narratives," wrote Deborah Landau, author of How to Live. What to Do: The Poetics and Politics of AIDS.
Sarah Luckadoo reads an introduction to offer context and background on the poet and the poem.

Bless you for the head's up- I subscribe to SO MANY CHANNELS- I am interested in EVERYTHING, and feel, genuinely life is for learning- and so I miss out- I have no friends with AIDS but I maintain an interest in research or lack of because people are just people- I don't judge- who is anybody to sit in judgment?! Obviously AIDS research does go on but unlike Covid, the disease isn't a money grab nor does it affect as many as cancer- I don't have any stats. Thanks for this very moving post, sincerity is a quality we are in need of these days- witness how many people know the intimate details of Johnny Depp's marriage but little of the history of The Ukraine - including me! What we value as a kulture is disgusting- Johnny and Amber despise the paparazzi and yet- ! Collusion, making behind the scenes deals on "how to act in court" - he is one of my favorite actors too but right now I am peeved with him- and since he plays "gay" characters so often, why doesn't he speak out on behalf of the victims and their loved ones, AIDS isn't going away, why must it take a back burner to covid...Namaste

Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for watching. More poetry, fewer celebrity lawsuits, and the world would be a better place.
