  • Basic watercolor palette for beginners, must have colors to buy, otherwise known as a split primary set, with a few additions:
This is not every colour you will ever need, but it's a great place to start. A warm and cool version of each primary (Red, Blue, Yellow) which will help you to mix your secondary colours (Orange, Purple, Green). Plus some really useful earth colours. The full list is here, similar shades can be substituted if for example you want colours that are fully transparent and not granulating:
    Lemon Yellow
    Cadmium Yellow
    Permanent Rose
    Cadmium Red
    Cerulean Blue
    Ultramarine Blue
    Yellow Ochre
    Raw Umber
    Burnt Umber
    Payne's Grey
You do not need black or white when starting to paint in watercolour, nor do you need hundreds of colours. Start with these, then add more later!

Ah, well at first I was just experimenting, and putting up the odd video. Then Covid happened and closed all the teaching venues...

Very cool easy going video. What brands do you recommend for these? I am guessing most of the big gun major brands carry all these....? I think in your videos you mention...SA? out of England?

I have my own set of beginners paints now, you can find them via my website, just google my name. Other brands I like include Talens Rembrandt, Winsor and Newton Professional and Daniel Smith. These are very common colours and you will find them most places. I have also done an updated version of this video, I can't place links here but it's called How To Start Watercolor Painting (10 Starter Colors!)
