Personally I’ll admit I’m a level 19 and I’m impatient and absolutely cannot stand the slow paced prop or even low tier turbine gameplay. So I bought the f-5 and the f20 and I can confidently say in my inexperienced opinion that I can preform really well even in an up tier if I play tactically and not head on the first spawn I’ve easily dropped 9 kill games. f20 was a good fighter just the thing was f16 came out right after it. f20 is pretty much just a cheaper f16 that only does two things better vs f16 (aoa/low speed)

F20 it's way more fun and it's missiles can carry it if he can't aim his guns
Also the f5 is less forgiving flight performance wise because just does have the engine power to accelerate quickly if messes up and gets slow
