    Could you let the flowers dry and then rough them up to get the seeds out? A great way to preserve basil is using ice cube trays. Place basil in, cover with olive oil and freeze. Put all cubes into a zip lock bag. Then just add to your favourite sauces. Cheers.

      Yes you can get the seeds that way, I'm taking the dried flowers and going to put in a paper bag and shake shake shake

      Mine were quite dry And I let them sit in a paper bag for a good month. Last night I went to harvest the seeds I wasn't even sure if the little flower was to see but I soon discovered the little seeds inside. It was very time-consuming I had to open each one. It was therapeutic I just did it when I was watching a movie but I would love it if you could just kind of crumble in between your hands and the seeds fall out! Such as nature!

    I have a huge basil plant that keeps getting bigger, literally up to my waist and it's still growing. I planted this basil as a freshly cut stem straight into some dirt 😂 anyways everyone at work enjoy eating and taking basil home all from that random basil stem i shoved into dirt in our workplace backyard.

    I so needed a thorough video to dry it besides leaving on the counter for weeks to dry out. Also, since my basil bush has bolted big time and is flowering all over, I wasn't sure when it was ready for me to pick them off. I see these white or cream colored looking seed pods (I'm guessing) towards the tips. Looks like I just need to be patient. Thank you for putting me at ease about it and showing me an easier way to dry my basil out for storage.

    Do the seeds dry on the plant before you harvest them? Or do you cut the stem that has some seed pods and them dry them? If so, how long does it take for seeds to dry before you can harvest them?

    • @annick213

      You have to wait until the flowers are very dry while still on the plant. Dont pick them while they are still green, wait until they are brown and dry and now you can cut the dry flowers from the plant and collect the seeds. Hope this helped

I just throw leaves in my pasta and make caprese salad with it but it taste so strong don't know what else to make with it. I will preserve some using the microwave method you showed. Thank you! That seems so easy. I finally just let some of the branches produce the flowers and harvested about 80 seeds. I think I should be set for the rest of my life! Do people actually buy basil when it's so easy to grow?

  • @vicmurai1033
    @vicmurai1033 6 лет назад +49

    You surely must be kidding !! Extracting each basil seed individually? The easier way is to cut off a handful of basil branches, put them in a paper bag, and then vigorously shake the bag. All the seeds will simultaneously drop off and collect in the bag.

      You're right Joni. In fact you will be collecting basil seeds until the day before you leave the Earth. Some people's logic amazes me. This dude must be related to a dude called Trump. Simply cut off a handful of basil branches, when the branches become dry and brown; then put them into a paper bag and shake vigorously. All the seeds will collect in the bag. Sound too simple? IT IS. It's called "Simply Gardenng 101". Learned this method at Trump University from an adjunct professor named, Dr. Vlad Putin, ASS, Msc, PhD.

    Man you look just like rob finds treasure! :D
    I came her about the basil seeds because my plants are bolting and not sure what to do, now I know.
    What I do with excess basil is keep jamming leaves in the blender with olive oil then I found ice cube trays that are the size and shape of gum drops. I pour the mix of basil and olive oil in the tray and freeze it and then bag the gum drop cubes. Great to add to sauces and in a pinch it's a step away from pesto. Pretty much can use it the same way you'd use basil and olive oil. I wasn't a fan of the bigger cubes because it's too much basil for a lot of things. The smaller tray was a good find for this. Anyways that's how I preserve my excess. Drying it seems legit also.

    Great video!! I am having a hard time getting my Thai basil seed pods to grow. It's so frustrating, because last summer they self propagated ALL over the garden. I couldn't stop it once it got started. And now I can't get the darn seed pods to germinate in my grow station. This basil is trying to play me! 😄 I didn't open the pods all the way, because I figured they grew naturally without me helping. But I will definitely try this and see if I have more success. Also, I wonder how Thai basil will do when dried in the microwave? It's worth a try. This video was uber helpful. 👍🏼

      Any yellow leaves are lacking nutrients at this point and therefore, are lacking flavor. I'd say no, but mine turn yellow at the base too. I just cut them off and wait for new healthy leaves to come in! Basil can do fine in the fall and early winter in almost all zones.

    Been doing some research but one question I still can’t find the answer to...when did you take your your flower stalks off? Or did you leave them on the plant until they died? I watched another video before this one and she said to cut them off so the plant will continue to grow so I ran out and did that to mine, then saw this one and another one and thought ah crap, did I do that too soon? There are some seeds in the bottom parts of them but not all the way up like yours and they’re open and not closed like yours either. Did I jump the gun? I know nothing about basil, just liked the smell and bought some on a whim lol. I haven’t even used any but wanted to get some seeds from it in case it died on me. It seems to be doing alright though. I boil chicken for my turtles and dog and water it with that water too, something I read somewhere. Pasta water too. Also, do the plants just die every year when winter comes and you just plant seeds for next year? I bought mine from a hardware store when it was about 4” long. It’s an outside plant in a planter a little too big to bring inside.

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  6 лет назад +1

      Em Dooey I waited until the seed stalks were completely dried out - no flowers anymore. I plant basil every year from the seeds I collect. You may have jumped the gun a little bit if you let them dry out you should still get a good amount of seeds.

    I can not tell you how much basil I have tossed, because dehydration can turn them brown . Looks like the microwave works great!!

    Can someone PLEASE tell me how to grow a basil plant from seed!!!!
    Ive tried everything. Ive put half dozen seeds in a pot, seen them germinate and sprout and then before they get to an inch or two they die off.
    Then i realized a plant we would buy in a store is made up of 20 stems and each stem takes 1 seed so i put 20+ seeds close together in center of pot. They germinated and grew beautifully. 1 " .... 2" .... 4" still just with their original two seedling leaves. Now some along the edges are falling over. Growing another inch or two higher i figured would strengthen stems and they would stand. BUT THEY DIDN'T!!! Soon all of the stems are fallen over and now when i water all im doing is sticking them to the dirt.
    And then they all start to die off.
    Ive bought small basil plants from store under 6" tall and they stand up. Why do they not stand up from seed? To this day.... even tho ive grown an entire garden from seed.... i cant grow a stupid basil plant.

      Wow! How long did you hear them up for? In all seriousness, that's never happened to me. I only heat up the leaves though - no stems. I hope everyone is ok?!?

      lol troll. i doubt anything can catch fire in a micro wave unless you put in metal. the microwave will likely destroy itself if you heat up something for too long. microaves heat water, no water, no heat, radiations will go back to the emitting device and destroy it.

    That was so weird to hear your voice but not for treasure. I didn't look at the channel before clicking. I'm just trying to find the fastest way to get most of my seeds from 5 supermarket paper bags full of pods.

    As soon as I saw this dude's face, we thought this is not a good guy. Then he goes on to get argumentative trying to save face with every commenter who tells him how to do things right. If he has a girlfriend, we feel sorry for her. She won't be around long.
