  • Every year, the Palace of Westminster Clockmakers, have the huge responsibility of changing the time on the Great Clock when British Summer Time (BST) finishes and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) begins - and vice versa each spring.
The process involves careful precision and split-second timing from the clockmakers. As well as re-setting the time, it gives them an opportunity to make close inspection of the clock mechanism as part of a rolling maintenance programme.
In addition to ensuring the most famous clock in the world is correctly re-set, the clockmakers have 2000 other clocks throughout the Palace of Westminster and the parliamentary buildings to adjust over time change weekend.

Pretty cool how it changes the way it does. It's amazing how it does not go out of control

A very interesting video of Big Ben being adjusted when BST begins & consequently ends too! An interesting job to have charge of the Great Clock & all clocks at the Palace of Westminster!

These are very interesting, I can go to London, but I never have the chance to go because Big Ben is under renovations.

So there is a working person turning the clock hands all the time?

Why do the lights have to be turned off when changing the time and the bells silenced?

They're not really required to do so if I understand, it's done to try to reduce publicity from people walking around outside, although if you stand close enough to the tower, you can still see them advancing the hands.
