There will be plenty of time for other things during the months we can't have fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.😂 Thanks so much for bringing us along. Enjoy the break from the heat! Stay safe!!

    I love seeing your garden and so appreciate that you show both the good and struggling areas. The bugs on your sunflowers are leaf footed bugs. I read an article once that said sunflowers often act as leaf footed bug farms! 😯They're related to stink bugs and a major problem where I live, in Alabama. I can't tell you how many tomatoes and peppers they've destroyed in my garden over the years.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead

      @@SageandStoneHomestead I was trying to find that article and am not having any luck. But I do remember them saying you can disrupt the life cycle of the leaf footed bugs by spraying your sunflowers with neem oil regularly. So if you see too many more of them, that might be a good organic option.

Fun kitties intermingled in and always love goatie goat intermission. So glad Tori came running for extra pets, gives me flashbacks to when she was younger. Eggplant parm is a favorite of mine, thin slices breaded and crispy with sauce and cheese! I bet those round beauties would do great for that or babaganoush. @@SageandStoneHomestead well it still has time if mother nature co operates lol. corn just started to tassel, beans have had flowers profusely with only a few pods and squash just started flowers this week. my avg first frost is sept 20 but it varies a lot, record early frost Aug. 20th and I think we have got near Halloween some years . I planted late this year was cool wet late spring June seeding. Cool cloudy this week not helping, today high 18c(64f) vs couple weeks ago 33c(91f). most years the heat stays until September. gardening is a lot like gambling, with mother nature as the dealer or house.

    Good morning Heather, I so enjoy your videos. I really appreciate your transparency of the good as well as how real the struggle is gardening. We are happy to announce that our one and only surviving plant has gotten right now 3 ( whoop whoop) lol my question is how long do you dry them? I see you have some by a garden bed that look dry so I was thinking it takes quite awhile for them to fully dry out. I realize our growing zones are very different (9B/10a for me) so just some sort of time frame would be nice. Wishes for awesome day

    I know I've heard you say you use your hay in your garden beds. We stopped using any hay or straw in our yard because the tomatoes kept getting curled leaves, stunted growth, blossoms falling off and generally looked bad. We had our soil tested and it came back with high levels of herbicides. We grow in a suburban backyard. It's been about 7 years now and the gardens are doing so much better as are the other veggies. We now only use our homemade compost. We also start new beds with huglekulture mounds. We do bring in tons of leaf bags in the fall as well as wood chips from the local tree company's. We also don't buy fertilizers and use our comfrey for mulch or make comfrey tea. Shredded paper, cardboard and grass clippings with rabbit poo is what we top dress the gardens with once the plants are established.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Месяц назад +3

      We use hay from no spray fields off of friend's farms. We use our animal's manure in the beds (they eat the hay) so it was important to me that the hay was not sprayed. You'll see my cherry tomatoes have curled leaves, there is actually no hay in one of those beds, we are dealing with tomato curly top virus brought in and spread by the immense amount of aphids and whiteflies we have seen, which is a bummer but I'll take it over herbicide damage!

    Man its been a rough year with pests. I grow my stuff within an enclosed porch or sunroom. I got a rosemary bush going strong and this year only did arugula and cucumbers. ive had to scrap 2 batches of arugula because of the picklemoth larva. They just decimate arugula/lettuces and cucumbers. Thankfully they have only bothered with the leaves on my cucumber plant and ive worked through and picked them off. I got some pest netting to help with the rest of the growing year and have protection for next years harvest. But man its so frustrating! I hope things clear up or go better for next year and for cooler growing season!
