Thanks for your interesting videos 😁💝
Very glad you are enjoying them :)
I use Zinsser's amber shellac and really like the surface it creates. I use on both wood panels and paper. When I use it in my sketchbook, I take a section of a brown paper bag and put it behind the page I am shellacking, this protects the other pages in the sketchbook, and also lifts the page I have shellacked slightly, which seems to decrease the drying time. I have also used a fan on low to help with the drying time. Another thing to consider is putting a piece of wax paper between the unused, shellacked pages, to make sure they don't stick together.
ah thats a great idea to put a brown paper bag behind the page to protect it and decrease the drying time. Also good tip on placing wax paper between pages. Thanks for sharing!
Very informative. Thank you very much!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this it’s a big help 😊 could I ask if you would paint straight onto this surface once the shellac is dry and also is there any chance of you making a video showing us what it’s like to paint on. Thank you ☺️
You are so welcome! Yes, you can paint directly onto the shellac once it is dry. Thats a great idea, will use one of my shellac surfaces to paint on in a future video.
@ that’s great thank you 🤩
Thank you fr the info.. luv India
You are so welcome!
Hehe... yeah- let's talk about shellac first- It is a resin, a hard resin. It is wonderful on wood but is only used in conjunction with artwork on the BACK of panels. Why? Becuase it cracks, and yellows HORRIBLY, and must be refreshed over time. Shellac must be melted via alcohol, recombining the compounds to slick over the surface once again, and it is wise to remove whatever old shellac has flecked up before recoating. If you use this as a base for oils... it can degrade and destroy the art with no recourse for any conservator. How can you apply new under the artwork? How can you separate it from the paper? You can't. This is why the masters used gesso made from hide glue, plaster (gypsum) and chalk, the chalk and plaster sets up a hard non moving substrate for the painting that will not move or crack. You can use this on paper. You can also use hide glue to size the paper before adding hide glue gesso. It is water soluble, and all you need is hot water. An alternative is PVA glue, which is much easier to use.
Thank you, I have lots of watercolor paper to try this one. Can you still roll the paper up after painting is dry, or will it cause cracking?
I was about to ask the same question 😊 really interested in this
Thats great you have lots of watercolor paper! Thats a great question. For your painting to be the most safe and archival it is best for it to be mounted onto a rigid surface. Bending/ rolling it up could lead it to crack over time. I wish it could have the option of being rolled up without any consequences as I also like to roll up paintings for storing purposes!
How many lac bugs does it take to make 1kilogram of shellac ? Between 50 000 & 300 000.
Oh sorry - didn’t know that’s where the stuff comes from ? 😂
