This just shows how far technology has come especially since u remember the original/remaster are "pre-render" cutscenes instead of real time in game. The expressions and view of small details like tears from shown videos are clear compared to remaster
according to naughty dog, they are in engine prerendered, they were running on a ps3 and then they recorded the cutscenes. The reason they were pre rendered was just to avoid loading screens for the cutscenes, and mask the other loading screens with video cutscenes. while I dont believe them 100% that the cutscenes were fully generated by a ps3 on solid 30fps, I believe the ps3 could definitly run a very similar cutscene. ok bye
@@DmadPs I saw in behind the scenes and in game files, (when was model swapping) the pre render cutscenes made sense on PS3 as lack the horse power to real time render and play cutscenes with render (vertex) models, particles, blood, etc. Tht only shows how far technology has come as I still have game files and PS3 (And still play and love it) I doubt the team could've made it play in real time instead of pre render as could causes crashes and loading freezes (as some model swaps I had to downgrade the vertex resolution as cause model to be invisible/freeze onloading). Even looking on PS4 files (this I got confused because PS4 Im sure could render but could be wrong) has some copy pre render scenes files. PS5 made scene as some changes (like full render real time cutscenes blood and reflections show) as on par to PC AMD levels. I could run render test on my CFW PS3 to test this theory though
@@TheCorrellRoyHD could be they have a modified version of the engine to pre render cutscenes, or maybe they just straight up lied. But also we gotta remember they can hide a lot of rendering objects from the scene. If you look at certain scenes in the game, like the window on the opening screen, when joel gets his head pushed agaisnt the glass, the rendering in these areas looks really good, joels face looks very close to the cutscene, so i dont doubt naughty dog could make work at around 15 /20 frames with crazy optimization. Same time, I do think they lied a bit and took some liberties that wouldn’t work if it really was pre rendered by a ps3 running at real time.
@@yeejay6396 From what I know the first 2 ucharted games didn't have facial mocap performance, all of it were lip synced and animated unlike tlou. And if you were talking about the full body mocap it's done by the actors themselves within their respective games so they wouldn't have the same movements as they had different performance captured and thus different animamations (cutscene & gameplay-wise). So I'm a bit confused to what you're pertaining as "repasted ucharted animation assets." But if you're talking about how the animation looks or feels then I do relate cause older uncharted games and tlou share the same game engine, and thus the limitations of those times makes it so that the animation wasn't as weighty as later games making them feel similar. The remake still uses the old animations from the original, unfortunately. But they massively improved facial expressions (as you can see in the vid) with the added benefit of motion matching to smooth out the jankiness.
It's definitely an improvement on paper. I just don't know if I prefer it over the style of the original. Something about the look of late-PS3 games just feels a little more enduringly charming than a total focus on extreme realism to me. Either way, I'm interested to get my hands on this once the price comes down.
You can actually really see the emotions in the characters’ faces, like when Sarah died, you can see Joel’s facial expressions with WAAAY more detail and same with Sarah. I cried when I saw that all those years ago, but watching it but with updated graphics ect, it was like watching it again for the first time because you can feel what Joel felt for real this time. And when Henry killed himself, you could see the really shock on Joel’s face when compared to the remastered version of the game. I can go on and on and on about how much better the game is from a realistic and graphical perspective, but you get my point
Felt it the first time and 11th time, honestly the remake is how I visually remember the ps3 version. Just like when you remember childhood games looking better than they really do
As much as I love the new graphics, I’ll always have a place in my heart for the OG graphics. New and old look like entirely different people in my opinion
@@tonyyyb hey man I wasn’t trying to be an old timer. You have a point and I’m glad you shared it. I really do enjoy the way the first and second games are. I was only trying to share my feelings about the old compared to new because the first LoU is one of the games I grew up on

5:05 when Joel turns around to avoid the gunfire, you can briefly see his ear illuminate red because of the light shining through his skin. Its such a small detail but sells it so well.
@@courirnorte8137 Doubt it was actual sub-surface scattering on the old version. Perhaps used for some cutscenes or "faked" but overall it would be too taxing for ps3 during gameplay, probably not added on the remaster either.
Omg the facial expression on Sarah starting at 5:25 … my god. That scene has never touched me more than it did right now. Jesus - what wonders can better animations make. I was choking back tears
The one thing that always bugged me about the original was the white fuzzy glow surrounding the main characters in cutscenes. Glad that has been rectified in the remake.
I think what you're seeing is the depth of field's mask not being quite right. DOF is added on top of the flat image with a depth mask, which would slightly overlap the edges of foreground objects, which meant that the blur filter would catch colours from the edges of characters. I think newer games add a slight margin so you can see a tiny halo of perfect focus around foreground stuff instead, which is far cleaner looking.
I'm only halfway through but Tess' eyes are SO visibly sad, I'm getting way too emotional seeing a cutscene I've watched a million times over. Absolutely mesmerizing to see them emote, especially in scenes that are already so fraught. Also, Sarah looked like a genuine real person when she showed up, I was shocked. I don't see myself buying it, but I do see myself appreciating from the sidelines, lmao
Buy it when its in a steep sale. Unlike Nintendo, Sony is good at selling their AAA games for cheap not too long after. That's why i dont understand why people are complaining about this game being $70. Just wait a few months and itll be at reasonable price.
@@Deeone282 I would really consider that! I dont have a ps5 though and I definitely couldn't justify *that* purchase atm, so for now I'll just watch what's on youtube I s'pose
I love how they look in the remaster/original more, though I can't deny the emotions come across better in the remake. It's weird though, because I feel like Joel's expression in the remaster always got really well across - in most scenes - even in the old style, but for instance Tess, ... she was kinda done dirty if we see the remake. The range of her faces got limited in some way. I wish there was a mix of both styles.
You have no clue what you're talkin' about and nostalgia is clouding y'all judgements. The remake in terms of facial animations is so superb. Tess/Ellie didn't even look like people, they aged horribly. Only Joel aged well from the original and maybe Sam and Henry.
@@MalphasMikaelson Lol, I basically said the same thing you just said. When it comes to emotions, the remake is certainly better. But, and here’s an opinion, I did like the art style of the remaster/original better. And that isn’t purely out of “nostalgia,” but out of having an opinion lol
Dude. During Sara’s death scene, as Joel is clutching her after she passed, in the remake you can literally see tears roll off his cheeks and nose, with some of them falling directly onto Sara’s face. Needless to say, I am ready for my heart and soul to be demolished by this game, yet again.
Maybe i'm complaining too much, but i think the face of Joel doesn't match his more angry voice in part 1. In part 2 i had no problem with his face appearing softer. He aged, he lived for years in a protected community and also mentally softened up, mainly because of being a sort of dad for Ellie and of course living in said protected community. But now i'm hearing that same hardened voice that i heard during about 10 playthroughs of TLoU1 and it just doesn't seem to match with his softer looking face in the remake. Maybe i will get used to it, but i don't understand why they couldn't make him look more rugged in those days when his mentality was also much harder. So yeah, i see it the same as you i guess...
@@Sydebern yeah I feel the same way, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I prefer the original because of the expressions the original had. This remake is giving me feelings of uncanny valley at times when the expressions don't match the tone of the scene. This is just my personal opinion but it bothers me how triangular they made Ellie's face in the remake or how less pissed off Joel looks. Everybody's hair look less greasy and Ellie's eyes are a lot less pronounced and look brown most of the time where as in the original, they're almost glowing green. I get that it's not "realistic" lighting wise but for a cinematic game you'd think they'd amplify some bits of the scenes by hand rather than just copying and pasting TLOU2 models onto old motion captures and thinking that that automatically makes it better. It's like watching the real life footage used for a rotoscope animation instead of the actual animation, stripping away the charm because "realism equals better". This is my favourite video game and I'm liking the gameplay but the facial animations and lighting placements of the cutscenes are taking me out. Maybe this is just a me problem idk?
@@Sydebern like 2:31 or any other close up in the remake feels less cinematically impactful because the lighting is rendered in real time instead of perfected in a pre render
@@altimanzify Well it's not just you. I'm getting uncanny valley vibes too. And since it is one of my all time favorite games as well, i'm disappointed. At least we have the original, but would it have been too much to ask from a developer with the skillset of ND to at least ensure that the graphics and animations fit with the audio? I want to see angry rugged Joel again. He lived 20 years of hell and he's looking like a teddy bear with his soft cheeks and dreamy eyes. It's not right... Again, i had no problem with that in part 2. He had lived a relatively protected life with people to care about. It's only natural that he softened up. But in part 1 he's ruthless and have been for decades. He should look like it.
@@altimanzify Yeah i definitely see your point. Sometimes realism isn't everything. Certainly not in a cinematic experience like this. Nothing wrong with an unrealistic spotlight lighting up a face so we can see it better.
It's amazing how much improved the facial animations are, I really didnt expect that. The camera also feels a lot more dynamic. I love every bit of it.
This is gonna sound stupid.. But I wasn't for this remake till I been seeing more and more leaks. And I'm for it! What's crazy is, seeing the original version of the game is like watching the cartoon version.. Seeing the remake is like they found real actors for those cartoons and they came to life.. Game definitely looks good.. Can imagine how it will look on your own tv that's on a good Qled or Oled Edit: the same things are gonna be nice in this game. Example, you can see Ellie in the mirror when Joel was walking away.. Little details there
I know everyone’s saying it but the facial expressions in the remake are so amazing. It makes the original character models seem so static and dated even though we were all just as enthralled by them only a few years ago
@@aigami7928 The character models in cutscenes in the original literally have this aura of light on them which is completely at odds with the actual lighting in the scenes. For the remake the lighting is now a lot more realistic, it's outrageous to say it's better in the original.
god, when the soldier fires and joel turns around, the flare of the gun has subsurface scattering in joel’s fucking ears. i’m so damn excited for this masterpiece.
Wow, remake Sarah looks so damn cute and real! You can really tell the remake cutscenes have improved on the original version overall, especially when looking at the renewed facial expressions and graphics. I have to say though, the original cutscenes still hold up to today's standards.
Didn't catch this the first time but that's such a good point. I was always confused in the first one that he just seems angry when he's literally losing someone he's spent years with, instead of feeling like he's been gut punched because its so out of the blue he's losing her and he can't stop it

7:17 the added reflection in the mirror, great. The entire "you have no idea what loss is" dialogue does work so well with the new facial expressions. Great work
I’ve gone back and forth on this remake a lot in the past two months. But these seemingly little differences make some of the most impactful moments of this game so much more powerful. Joel’s watch getting broken at the same moment that he was broken by the loss of Sarah. Ellie seeing herself in the mirror right before she brings up Sarah. The amazing performances shining through the facial animations perfectly. I can go on but I think you all get the idea.
I love that they made Tess and Marlene look more like real people. I never really liked how they both used to look like generic ps3 models compared to Joel and Ellie.
especially when watched closely, -Reflections in glass/mirrors: Unlike the Remastered (and PS3 version) their is no real time reflections in both game and cutscenes for characters in mirrors/glass but in the remake they are present and follow in the scene and gameplay -Much more expressive: I seen ppl still say expressions are better in original and remaster more than remake (this is opinion based btw) but from replaying the remaster and seeing it and compare to the ReMake of the game. The remastered looked too stiff as some characters wanted to cry but face tracking couldnt allow it (might be because of hardware rendering) but show in the characters eyes, for example, have read tint and specular reflection using environment mapping instead of real time rendering) like Sarah crying before she died and when Joel shot the turned companion. , was red tinted to express crying and being scared but in remake, Sarah expressions both eyes and face are more clear and even sadder once see it again (GOD I cant wait to relive this) -The shadows and environment are more accurate: I notice some ppl say in ReMake some areas look dark but lets be honest, in abandon and desolate places why TF u think would be bright? Theirs a reason why they have a flashlight and the HDR is more tone mapped seeing from the videos and screenshots compared to original/remaster, especially in Spore covered environments as in the remaster spore particles was repeatily spread compared to remake. They are still spreaded but the fog/smoke in ReMakes isnt too hard to read from wide FOV. -The attention to detail is more visible: This is noticable in the Tommy and Joel confrontation video, but u can actually see Joel spit with his anger lisps arguement with Tommy of taking Ellie thats not present in the original. -theirs actual rendered blood in cutscene: Visible views are like Henry when he shot himself and see the "OMG" face on Joel and the splatter compared to the original (which is not rendered in prerender cutscene)
@@kuladajefula123 and thats the sad part, ppl say its a remaster because leak Gameplay is near to the same but its rebuilt on RTX/Real time render and graphics and particles tht PS3/PS4 couldnt handle but ignoring the improvements as I seen many ppl compare it to RE2/3 Remake and old 90s games remake but thts a huge DIFFERENCE as those games were using old 90s prerenders and loading schematics compared to PS3 game files loading past times. This is a rebuilt for PS5 and soon PC but the major difference is that ppl expect gameplay change as remaster is only minor changes but keep (most be lazy in even graphics) to the same but this remake adds expressions, improvements of lighting, tears, particles, wet physics etc and I cannot wait to replay this and make me cry (I honestly cant get over how much I cried on PS3 version (before remaster as was same for me but the clear lines and expressions will have a impact)
@@TheCorrellRoyHD I'm hopeful that RUclipsrs like Digital Foundry will show people how massive those upgrades in the remake are and that it is not just a paint job
What I also love about the remake is that the camera is wobbly for the dramaticness of the scene, and that some of the angles look different in the remake instead of being static
I remember back in 2012 when this game was climbing the hype charts....then in 2013 was released on PS3 and it was hands down without a doubt the best graphically looking game at that time. Then it got a remaster for PS4 and I was shocked at how much better the game looks kinda felt it should have gotten delayed to release only on PS4.... But now a remake for PS5 with what naughty dog has picked up and learned making TLOU Pt2 just I'm mind blown at much technology has come for devs in this past decade like crazy to see the raw emotions in the faces and the facial animations just bringing the scenes to proper life and to the next level I can't wait for TLOU Pt3
I feel the same way, it should have got delayed and premiered solely on ps4. But in me saying this i dont think we would have had the bangers we had afterwards e.g. last of us inspired god of war 2018 and a bunch of other games that were in ps4 lifecycle these games would not be able to be inspired and release the time they released if TLOU came out later. Im greatful it came out when it did but you can definetly tell it was being held back when it came out on ps3 pushing it to its absolute limits.
Looks absolutely insane. Little clips here and there can look good, for sure, but when you see entire scenes, that’s when it all really comes together.
Call me crazy or nostalgic, but I honestly prefer the original (remastered) version, especially Tess. On a side note, I think Josh Brolin would've been more suitable than Pedro Pascal as Joel in the live action series .
I REALLY love how Tess looks. So much more realistic compared to the old design. Also appreciate the age-up given her implied years of experience like Joel (not to mention they had some flirtatious commentary at times. Given the theories, it'd be weird if he did date a woman in her late 20s/early 30s).
Exactly, which is why I find it so hilariously ridiculous when I saw initial reactions to the new design for Tess with people saying such things as "tHeY mAdE tEsS LoOk LiKe A gRaNdMa" because I guess these people have never seen what a mid/late 40's woman actually looks like.
@@TheMenInTightsPodcast New Tess looks more like early 50's in good shape, like exactly Joel's age. Previous Tess could pass for somewhere in her 30's to early 40's, which wouldn't be unusual.
Joel had a more menacing look to him in the original, I loved that feature about him, the new one looks just too soft for this world, I think his skin is a little too loose, also greatly prefer ellies original model since it made her look way more innocent than the new one. Just my thoughts
What you on about everything looks better in the remake like Joel actually looks his age and Ellie character model is just better in every way. But it's just my thoughts and I respect you're opinion
Totally agree, it's not about details and definition (which are much better in the remake of course) it's about his distinctive facial expression that Joel seemed to have lost in the transition to the new one......pity
I kind of feel that about pretty much every character. No denying that it's a step up graphics-wise, and the facial acting they can pull off is really impressive, but I think I liked the look of pretty much every character more in the original.
@@iloveblackC Nah bro, Joel's facial construction in the original is something we got used to and he looks more stoic than new Joel. I agree, Old Joel just looks better
Almost impossible for the TV show to live up to this. The HBO trailer has me worried, Bella's delivery of the farm scene is so monotone. I hope it's just because we haven't seen much
The scene might be a bit different. There's more than one possible way to play this particular scene. What worried me more than delivery is the possible changes they will make. Especially if they expand the story, I hope the expanded stuff is as well written as the original story and fits well within it
5:12 I like that lighting detail of Joel's hand casting a shadow on his face compared to the original. I appreciate the little details like this in games.
This is definitely "better" (or less worse) for Joel. Like, imagine the watch breaking after 10 years. It would have been terribly painful, almost as if Sarah had died a second time, since the watch is clearly one of his last memories of her. This way, there isn't even time to focus too much on the watch, because it's always been broken since her death. I know it's very subtle but I just feel like it's less painful for Joel now
@@Gabriel-Tár Agree! Besides, as their last normal conversation was about her gift wasn't working, the broken watch became a permanent reminder of Sarah. This detail fits perfectly with his behaviour through all the game.
The expressions on their faces compared from ps3 to ps5 are amazing . How Joel and Tess expressions are in the videos is awesome , I love last of us 1 and 2 and the same graphics on this is very similar to the ones we saw on part 2
Hated how people complained about Joel and Tess' looks in the remaster as if they haven't been through the most stressful situations since the apocalypse started.
@@TheSparkynuts I think it might be because his head looks smaller in the remake and or is shaped very slightly differently, I don't know, it's really hard to tell but he does look off somehow.
@@yourlonglosttwin8018 Tess' age was never revealed in game. Going by her looks, voice, and mannerisms, she seemed to be in her mid - late thirties. She always seemed younger than Joel.
When it comes to Tess's bite mark, I like the OG more the remake mark. reason being in the OG the mark spread within that hr, but in the remake it hadn't; yet she still said it gotten worse than Ellie's mark, but they look the same.
The graphics are incredibly impressive but the absolute top thing here is the facial animations. These characters have been brought to life, living and breathing on the screen. I’ve seen these cutscenes a million times but suddenly I find myself getting emotional again when Sarah dies and when Ellie kills David. It is completely drawing me in.
Original Joel's "Troy Baker" eyes are clearly missing from the remake. He looks like a completely different person, it's almost uncanny. I wish they had kept him closer to his original look.
8:15 I cannot understand why they changed it from joel turning to joel just death staring Ellie. Tommy’s entrance is very abrupt and would startle anyone, especially someone who’s been snuck up on for the last 20 years this just makes Joel look inhuman and strange. Side note: of all the emotions the new face of Ellie demonstrates in this scene none of them display nearly as much sadness/complexity as the original did, and yet Joel’s new model performs superbly. Kind of strange since they changed her face to reach increased facial fidelity between Ashley and the game model.
Uh oh, they are trying to change things to show how Joel was inattentive and sloppy, JUST TO JUSTIFY THE DUMPSTERFIRE OF THE SEQUEL Thank you for pointing it out
Love both, but i do have to say i like Joel's face in the OG when he yells better, he actually looks more exasperated and mad with Tess, in the new one he looks sad and tired, which is understandable due to everything he's been through but, thats just my observation.
At the scene when Joel and Ellie have an argument, you can clearly see how Ellie try holding back her tears, also the the expression of the remake version is being improve so much
All i can think of is how incredible the original looked for its time. Damn. Wish they kept the character models closer to the originals, i prefer the younger, colder look in particular for Joel
Having seen the live version they did of Tess's scene, it feels so much like that version did. You can really feel the performances of the actual actors coming through.
While I can tell there is a clear increase in graphics and visual fidelity, and obviously the facial animations are far better than the original; I can't help but feel like in the effort to achieve photo realism, the remake now looks like it lost a sense of identity in terms of art style. The original, while of course has its issues, felt a bit grittier and more dramatic. More intense visually. Colors popped more in some scenes. The remake lacks contrast, color, and depth in certain scenes that, in my opinion, it detracts from the art style in a way that it makes it look like any other photo realistic game.
I actually think this lack of vibrant scenes fits the game more. The world’s a depressing wasteland, so i think the remake’s depressing color scheme fits the world better
@@olavolima2330 Ironically because of the state of the world, with the overgrowth and lack of pollution it would actually cause a more vibrant environment. Especially in more woodsy areas.
@@tonyyyb I'm not saying it's wrong or bad in the remake. Nor am I saying people who like how it looks either way are wrong. It's just an observation I made how the remake, to me, feels less artistically inspired and just striving for realism rather than a distinct visual identity. And it's because of technical limitations that can allow some games to still look artistically good despite lesser graphical fidelity. IE a lot of Nintendo games
People don’t really mention the subtle shakiness of the camera. I love it, it makes you almost feel like another person/spectator who is with them for the whole journey
Something about the lighting from the original game is more appealing to me. I mean some of the new character stuff is cool but overall I still like the original more.
@@coreycasciano3255 Indeed. I think the original has a cooler unique directing style. Kinda reminds of the Spielberg lighting technique in War of the Worlds, Minority report and a few others.
It's crazy. When I first saw those scenes, the inferior graphics dulled their impact on me. Now it's like seeing it in real life, or acted out by Oscar-winning actors.
I dunno, I may be the only one who thinks the original looks better. Tess looks like an old lady, they've put an extra 8 years on Joel and they've made Ellie look older. I'm not sure why they've had to make everyone older. The lighting looks better in the original in some respects too.
It saddens me that people prefer the colder, higher graphical fidelity of the remake over the stronger artistic design of the original. The OG looks better. The more striking lighting adds so much to the atmosphere. The remake just looks like another Unreal Engine game
unpopular opinion: The characters look too different… it feels like a fever dream. Pre outbreak Joel, Sarah, and Tess look like completely different people
They look uncanny valley, Sarah looks awful That’s something I hate about some remakes they completely change how the characters look, the one I hate the least is Joel but still prefer his original look a lot more
I love how the characters seem aged more appropriately and convincingly in the remake. I always thought Tess is much younger than she actually is, due to lack of aging features in her face. Even real life Asian women still have visible aging as they get older. Also the facial animations are much more convincing than the original. I could gosh on more on how technically impressive the remake is, on graphical, modelling, and animation stand point. Not to mention all of the cutscenes being real time this time around.
Honestly I kinda like the designs of the original game but that’s no criticism towards the remake they made the characters look very real. And they really do look amazing. But og Joel imo looks way more badass.

I like the original lighting in the Tess scene, you can see their expressions better. Also Tess looks really different, I would have liked a mixture of old and new for her. Cool tho.
is just me or does anyone else think that the remake actually made the characters' facial expressions and their look less realistic compared to the PS4 Remastered version, which made the characters' death and emotional exchanges less impactful? I think apart from Joel, all other female characters' facial structures and sizes have been made slightly bigger. For example that Tess' face has clearly been stretched longer, it's so obvious that the gap between her nose and her upper lip is a lot longer compared to her original look, the same thing with Sarah's face. And that for me made them looked less realistic and uglier than their original look! As for Ellie's look, she does look a lot like the grown-up version of herself in Part 2, but for some reason, I think in order to make her look more like the Ellie in Part 2 that they forgot to make her look like a 14-year-old girl, unlike the original version of Ellie, she might not look like the grown-up version of Ellie in Part 2 but she certainly looked like a 14-year-old girl. On a side note: Does anyone else think that HBO totally miscast the GOT child actress for the role of Ellie for TLOU tv series? Also, I hope and pray that they do not make the TV version of the Part 2 storyline! That has to be one of the worst game franchise sequel stories ever written! It's like watching the final season of GOT all over again!! I mean, talk about a lesson on how not to destroy a most beloved franchise, and its most beloved characters in one go!
Ellie is 14. She looks like a real person in the remake compared to the original. Most people really love to watch these videos with flawed rose-tinted glasses on, it seems.
The talent of the Naughty Dog devs is unbelievable. The emotion in every scene is out of this world. Say what you will about tlou 2 and the writing but these are visually incredible.
For me, Sarah's death is one of the saddest deaths in gaming history, but there's something about Sam's death and Henry's that just gets to me on another level, something about two brothers surviving together and the older brother having to put his younger brother out of his misery and killing himself after is just tragic and just makes me sob everytime.
I am sure this is a very unpopular opinion. But I kinda rather Original aesthetic, not graphics, it is obvious that remake's are way bettee, I mean "aesthetic". I feel like the art direction of the original is better, orinigal feels more "artistic", and with this remake, they left part of that "art" aside and replace i5 with realism. The clearest example is the scene wheb the neighbour enter Joel's home, the cold ilumination tones of the original help a lot to get into the mood of the situation. The rest is just better in the remake ofc. Maybe if ND kept and preserved a bit more the original's art direction, this would be a perfect remake. If this comes to PC, there won't be anything that a reshade mod can't solve tho. I am anxious for this game

If anything, this shows how emotionally powerful the dialogue and voice acting was, despite the lack of high detail facial mapping in the original.
thats probably because they were working with 2006 hardware, this game was a technical marvel
The facial animation is on another level. The expressions and emotions really do elevate the scenes
Yep. Now it doesn't feel like repasted Uncharted Animations assets(?).
@@yeejay6396 when did it ever
@@owenjones7522 Watch the first 2 Uncharted cutscenes next the TLOU, and you'll see what I mean.
@@yeejay6396 are you complaining?
@@yeejay6396 From what I know the first 2 ucharted games didn't have facial mocap performance, all of it were lip synced and animated unlike tlou. And if you were talking about the full body mocap it's done by the actors themselves within their respective games so they wouldn't have the same movements as they had different performance captured and thus different animamations (cutscene & gameplay-wise). So I'm a bit confused to what you're pertaining as "repasted ucharted animation assets."
But if you're talking about how the animation looks or feels then I do relate cause older uncharted games and tlou share the same game engine, and thus the limitations of those times makes it so that the animation wasn't as weighty as later games making them feel similar.
I’d feel this way if it was telltales walking dead for example, but the graphics upgrade makes everything feel more alive

I remember noticing that but not making a point of it. Almost like they wanted to character to stand out more than anything else.

Absolutely mesmerizing to see them emote, especially in scenes that are already so fraught. Also, Sarah looked like a genuine real person when she showed up, I was shocked. I don't see myself buying it, but I do see myself appreciating from the sidelines, lmao

Why do i feel that joel in the remake version is always sad in his expression even when he is angry in the remastered version

I want to see angry rugged Joel again. He lived 20 years of hell and he's looking like a teddy bear with his soft cheeks and dreamy eyes. It's not right...
Again, i had no problem with that in part 2. He had lived a relatively protected life with people to care about. It's only natural that he softened up. But in part 1 he's ruthless and have been for decades. He should look like it.

Tess looked 20 years older in the remake , what the hell !
6:07 In Part 1, Joel's watch is broken after Sarah's shot, whereas in the OG, the watch face is still intact
Wow! These little details really bring it all together!
I love that they made Tess and Marlene look more like real people. I never really liked how they both used to look like generic ps3 models compared to Joel and Ellie.
especially when watched closely,
-Reflections in glass/mirrors: Unlike the Remastered (and PS3 version) their is no real time reflections in both game and cutscenes for characters in mirrors/glass but in the remake they are present and follow in the scene and gameplay
-Much more expressive: I seen ppl still say expressions are better in original and remaster more than remake (this is opinion based btw) but from replaying the remaster and seeing it and compare to the ReMake of the game. The remastered looked too stiff as some characters wanted to cry but face tracking couldnt allow it (might be because of hardware rendering) but show in the characters eyes, for example, have read tint and specular reflection using environment mapping instead of real time rendering) like Sarah crying before she died and when Joel shot the turned companion. , was red tinted to express crying and being scared but in remake, Sarah expressions both eyes and face are more clear and even sadder once see it again (GOD I cant wait to relive this)
-The shadows and environment are more accurate: I notice some ppl say in ReMake some areas look dark but lets be honest, in abandon and desolate places why TF u think would be bright?
And people stay say its a remaster

I was thinking the same. The facial expressions in the remake are somewhat muted
@@Miyaki497 true, true
@@tonyyyb I'm not saying it's wrong or bad in the remake. Nor am I saying people who like how it looks either way are wrong. It's just an observation I made how the remake, to me, feels less artistically inspired and just striving for realism rather than a distinct visual identity.
And it's because of technical limitations that can allow some games to still look artistically good despite lesser graphical fidelity. IE a lot of Nintendo games
In my opinion the young Joel in original game is better than remake
I love the direction they took with the cinematography everything feels more tense.
Graphics look borderline realistic with barely any flaws. Imagine this with full ray tracing. A man can dream can't he?
Its being released on PC so I bet someone will do it eventually lol
People don’t really mention the subtle shakiness of the camera. I love it, it makes you almost feel like another person/spectator who is with them for the whole journey
Something about the lighting from the original game is more appealing to me. I mean some of the new character stuff is cool but overall I still like the original more.
The new lighting looks too clean 🤷♂️
@@coreycasciano3255 Indeed. I think the original has a cooler unique directing style. Kinda reminds of the Spielberg lighting technique in War of the Worlds, Minority report and a few others.
@@benningtonford9475 very much agreed 😊👍
@@tonyyybIts just two peoples opinions. No ones said it was the absolute truth.
@@benningtonford9475 well it's not the absolute truth but when people are so lost in nostalgia other people wanna pull you out
Wtf Tess was actually good looking in the original. Dunno what they did with her in the remake
7:17 That shot with the mirror reflection looks soooo much better, wow
I'm impressed by how good the remake looks, can't wait anymore🥴
1:50 geez the remakes are crazy good.
All these years later and the deaths of Sarah, Sam and Henry still hit hard. Sometimes I can't watch it.
The original game looks like the walking dead game but the black outline on the characters don't really show up as much
@@maniwishihadthelongestname7641 no
@@maniwishihadthelongestname7641 literally no
Characters looked better in the original imo.. Not everything needs a remake ...
unpopular opinion:
The characters look too different… it feels like a fever dream. Pre outbreak Joel, Sarah, and Tess look like completely different people
They look uncanny valley, Sarah looks awful
That’s something I hate about some remakes they completely change how the characters look, the one I hate the least is Joel but still prefer his original look a lot more
Ellie looks the worst
I love how the characters seem aged more appropriately and convincingly in the remake. I always thought Tess is much younger than she actually is, due to lack of aging features in her face. Even real life Asian women still have visible aging as they get older. Also the facial animations are much more convincing than the original.
I could gosh on more on how technically impressive the remake is, on graphical, modelling, and animation stand point. Not to mention all of the cutscenes being real time this time around.
What do you mean by real time?🧐🧐
@Godzilla_With_A_Microwave As in they’re not pre-rendered, or pre-made. They happen in real time.
Honestly I kinda like the designs of the original game but that’s no criticism towards the remake they made the characters look very real. And they really do look amazing. But og Joel imo looks way more badass.
I agree and for some reason I find og tess looks more attractive than the remake.
I had to scroll a lot, before finding a comment from someone that prefers the original version (I was really feeling lonely ^^)
@@Noctis425 its because in the original game she doesn't look 94 years old.
@@shanustheanus she doesn't look 94 because I don't see any grey hair I was thinking 40 or 50 years of age
@@Noctis425 I erm... no you know what? I'm not going to explain how what I said was obviously not to be taken super literally and didnt require a correction. If you don't already know, you'll never get there. Instead, how's this? Not all elderly people have grey hair. Fact! I've just blown your mind right?!
I like the original lighting in the Tess scene, you can see their expressions better. Also Tess looks really different, I would have liked a mixture of old and new for her. Cool tho.
Judging from this video I prefer the OG tess over the remake.
@@mrnapolean1 yeah I'm not a fan of they aged her up so much
is just me or does anyone else think that the remake actually made the characters' facial expressions and their look less realistic compared to the PS4 Remastered version, which made the characters' death and emotional exchanges less impactful?
3:09 Daughter of Joel. Her t- shirt is changed in the 2022 version. Male singer to a Female singer? Why?
The talent of the Naughty Dog devs is unbelievable. The emotion in every scene is out of this world. Say what you will about tlou 2 and the writing but these are visually incredible.
For me TLOU2 story was wonderful. Such an emotional rollercoaster, that's what I'm here for.
@@ojvribeiro absolutely, even though the second game was pretty flawed.
There was nothing wrong with the writing in Part II. Direct your own sequel if you can do it better lol
@@Nutshell_92 I would bet my money he could do better
@@muaddib5079 I would double down on that bet.
tess and joel went from lookin 30 to 50, remake does look good though
This remake is gonna be awesome
Bro, naughty dog hates women. Tess is so fucking clapped in the remake holy shit
So much more powerful this time.
Why does the original looks like it has more soul. Higher graphics doesn't mean better if the same passion isn't there.
Looks great, but $70 price tag. Lol. Nope. I'll wait until it goes on sale for $10.
Amazing video, and the remake looks so real!
