Behrens had everything. Unlike some of the other greatest of the greats, she sang even the ghostly, demanding Strauss roles in a voice that was not merely powerful, it was beautiful.
Nothing short of amazing. She even keeps her arms and fingers stiff in "rigormortis" as her body is carried off. The woman thought of EVERY aspect of her characters in a way very few ever have.
I adored everything the woman sang and had the honor of hearing her sing live many times. She was thoroughly committed to every role she sang be it the Elektra of Strauss or Mozart's Electra. The artistry from one such as Hildegard Behrens is deeply missed and utterly incomparable..
Gorgeous interpretation. One of the most gracious sopranos I have ever had the pleasure to meet! What a delightful video! Thank you so much for posting :)
Stunning! I remember what a revelation this was when first broadcast in 1983. Who knew Mozart had written a mad scene? Brava Hildegard! You are missed.
I love the the way Cutrubus and Federica Von Stade started to look at her & the look on thier faces and leave. Oh God she's talking crazy LOL. Arnold Bourbon Amaral What a stellar cast.
Behrens's performance here is indescribably more sophisticated than I ever imagined it would be. Perhaps one of the only Italian roles that suited her unique talent; I was really impressed!!
When I sing this aria, and let me tell you, it's so much fun to sing, I always think of this performance. The best part is the very last line- the emphasis she puts on that... Such beautifully powerful music, what intense orchestration, shakes you to your core...
The most impressive Elettra on stage I have seen (on video, of course, because I couldn't - unfortunately - have heard her live). Behrens was certainly one of the great legends of the Post War period, though she wasn't as reknown as she deserved with that amazing voice (though not the most powerful), animal stage presence and a powerful sense of femininity and sensitivity even in the most dramatic and tragic roles. She'll be remembered as a great diva in a very broad range of repertoires.
Réponse à homoclassicis. . I was lucky to see Behrens in this rôle in many. Opéra houses. Always wonderful. Great "folie scène" like in Lucia Di lammermoor. Regards to you
The finest D'Oreste, d'Ajace I've ever seen, hideous staccati and all. Behrens has scarily become the character, and creates an aura of hysteria and desperation that is unmatched in any performance I've seen. The vocalism is far from perfect; one must go to Julia Varady on the Böhm recording for the perfect balance of hysteria and Mozartean style in this role. But such is Behrens' superlative theatricality that all is forgiven. It boggles the mind that this aria was cut at the Munich premiere, as Act III was deemed to be too long.
Jason Hurd The lack of perfection is what makes it great. I saw this production with this cast. The audience reaction was never any less than here. Ultimately the audience is who matters, and the audience, and this member of it, loved it.
It's funny, I have heard people put this performance down, but I find it riveting. Her voice is strong, bright, and angular...and there is a long tradition of casting Electra with a Wagnerian singer. She gets tired towards the end, and what soprano doesn't?
I saw Behrens many times in most of her greatest roles. Extraordinary artist, she became the characters she played in both words and music. But of course one has to be realistic - she never worked out the gear-changing in her registers, and the rasping in mid-range was always an impediment. But it was a small price to pay for her singular artistry.
So weird to stumble on this, not knowing what it is or by whom, but seeing Hildegard B. singing of ... Orestes??? But, I've been watching videos of her singing Strauss's Elektra!!...and singing about Orestes there. What parallel dimension is THIS??? Ah - Mozart! Idomeneo.
This Opera simulcast on TV and radio. I recorded them both. It was a stellar cast except for Pavarotti. Where is the ECT machine when you need it too late she's all kinds of crazy. Incredible performance I'd keep playing it over and over again the convulsions at the end are classic. I loved her Tosca when she kills scarpia and says morta morta with such conviction and hatred a great actress. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Arnold Amaral I was lucky enough to have seen this and many other great performances at the Met, even though I live in the UK . Pity so many of the truly great artists have gone. Not really enough properly trained talent to take their place.
M Scott those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end. A golden era of Opera. I have a friend in London where do you live? My daughter and son-in-law went to England about 12 years ago she preferred England over France. I am 4th generation American. According to my DNA I'm 15% British Isles. And The Beat Goes On my friend. I was at the Met once and saw La Boheme with Ileana cotrubas. A beautiful experience. What other operas did you see and with what performers Etc. Thank you very much have a great day Arnold. Bourbon Amaral
@@arnoldamaral7406 I live in Covent Garden, 2 minutes from the house. I also have a place in Sussex. My first opera was also Boheme with Cortrubas and Jose Carreras, so not a bad start. At the Met there was this, Barber of Seville with Kathleen Battle and Rothwell Blake, gosh, what else? Probably best of all the Centennial Gala. Hours of wonderful singing. Montserrat and Jose singing the finale from Andrea Chenier, Elizabeth Soderstrom, Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Stade with the great Rosenkavalier trio, the lovely septet from the end of act 1, I think, of L'Italiana in Algeri with Diane Kesling, Ara Berbarian and I can't remember who else. Wonderful days that have ended.
@@mscott3918 Sounds great, Lyric Opera Chicago is also a great Opera house that brings in the best artist. We've been there several times. Take care my friend Arnuad Bourbon Amaral
Yes, apparently she has died of an aneurism at 72. I did not know her work, but since Paul Potts, I have been trying to familiarize myself with more opera. I regret not having known about this lady until reports of her death. What an amazing voice to be lost!
ELETTRA ....(Vedrò Idamante alla rivale in braccio), e dall'uno e dall'altra mostrarmi a dito? Ah no; il germano Oreste ne' cupi abissi io vuo' seguir. Ombra infelice! Lo spirto mio accogli, or or compagna m'avrai là nell'inferno a sempiterni guai, al pianto eterno. ELETTRA [Aria] D'Oreste, d'Aiace Ho in seno i tormenti, D'Aletto la face Già morte mi da. Squarciatemi il core, Ceraste, serpenti, O un ferro il dolore In me finirà.
Phenomenal Hildegard. First saw this broadcast in the 1980s, and I will always return. Thank you Ms Behrens.
This was perhaps the most amazing performance I ever witnessed at the Met in my 35 years or so of attending.
Saw this and she literally tore up the Met stage in this scene..listen to the house going wild at such a performance..
Rigor mortis does not occur immediately. However, you are right. She is amazing. May she rest in peace.
She looks and sounds great here! I was so sad to hear of her death, she was always a favorite singer of mine.

dana winsor Quite something isn't it? Just shows that it wasn't just Donizetti who could do a good mad scene.
I love the the way Cutrubus and Federica Von Stade started to look at her & the look on thier faces and leave. Oh God she's talking crazy LOL. Arnold Bourbon Amaral What a stellar cast.
This really was a dream cast. It was interesting to see Pavarotti in role that wasn't the romantic lead.

First time I heard her was at Tosca with Domingo. A great Brünhilde. Will miss her a lot. Thank you for all that art.
It doesn't get better than this! Brava Ms Behrens!

Just.Totally.Awesome.Electrifying.
Where, oh WHERE has this singing gone?
Good question. It's gone the same way as so many exceptional things. Dumbed down, because now everyone has to be the star or they can't cope.
When I sing this aria, and let me tell you, it's so much fun to sing, I always think of this performance. The best part is the very last line- the emphasis she puts on that... Such beautifully powerful music, what intense orchestration, shakes you to your core...
eleonora1782 an absolute tour de force!
I have become a huge Hildegard Behrens
fan in the past year. She is so good.
She is vary good in Tosca also.
Absolument stupéfiant de présence et de jeu…!
PURA MARAVILLA DE VOZ
Magnifica interpretazione
Fantastica, straordinaria!

Amazing soprano!!!!
imádom! Very best Elettra!!!
R.I.P. We love you & miss you.
she´s perfect!!! Bravamuy her high notes are perfection, and is such a risker singer, she made herself famous with Salome.
E' geniale la sua interpretazione.Davvero brava.
I love this. She is grate.
Thanks for posting.
Quelle merveilleuse chanteuse. Ah nostalgie du temps passé. Maintenant on a Netrebko...

Chapeau !
I love her face. It is as expressive as her singing, resp. shouting/moaning.
I loved that!
Remind me again of who Ariana Grande is...
she's really good...I do like her voice

Many opera singers die from strokes, aneurysms or brain haemorrhages. Perhaps it's something to do with the strain they put themselves through.
Another irreplaceable singer. Too many of the current singers seem to think it is enough to force out a high note.

Adios a otra Grande de la ESCENA LIRICA
Read the article of jurgen Kesting in the Frankfurter Allgmeine Zeitung.
All that writhing. Verismo isn't for another hundred or so years.
Happens
She falls apart at the end for me a bit... Those stacatti were pretty terrible
Brendan Delehanty I think that was her being in the role
Brendan Delehanty And yet a full house at the Met seems to have liked it. Interesting.
