Putin, stands on the shoulders of Great Men like, Mikhail Gorbachev. I do know, a lot of romantic Russian people blame, Mikhail Gorbachev for the collapse of the Soviet Union, but as far back as the 1960, Soviet intellectuals were aware that the Soviet Union had serious structural and economic problems, which if not corrected would lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev brought in those reforms, but it was too late to save the Soviet Union.

Putin stands on the shoulders of previous colonial leaders, he seeks to return the world to a time where colonial ambitions are okay justified by the need to to tell one people (russians) that they are superior to others. It does not matter that the Ukrainian people do not wish to be russian, what matters to him is that he wishes it no matter the feelings of the local populace. That is wrong, I am sure Gorbachev is rolling in his grave, not that Putin cares.

He saw a way forward with the West that reduced the risk of nuclear escalation and instead would allow the Russian people the freedom to think and prosper for themselves. I understand of course why Gorbachev is held in such disdain by most Russians. Still, I see him as something of a tragic figure: a weak man promoted beyond his capabilities, playing with forces he didn’t really understand. Not without some redeeming qualities though.
He was left holding the tattered bag of the USSR (Russia) which he then went on to naively set on fire expecting it to be reborn like a phoenix from the ashes, while his drunken protégé Boris Yeltsin poured gasoline on the flames as we gave them more kindling , watched and applauded.
That's why they will both always be heroes to us...any ruler who destroys their own country for our benefit however good their intentions ...is A...ok with us.

Gorbachev was convenient for the West because he satisfied their interests, and now Putin has appeared who primarily takes into account the interests of his own people. When you say that Russia has never been a threat, do you take into account the fact that NATO surrounded Russia and the slightest provocation is enough to start a third world war? When Zelensky destroys his own people in the Donbas, promises to return Crimea, including by military means, there are really no threats.
