The ancient Greek pankration is considered the precursor to MMA, and the Japanese MMA organization Pancrase is named after the sport. The sport was a cornerstone of the Olympic Games, modeled after an earlier form of battlefield fighting called pammachon (all-out combat) that combined unarmed combat techniques with the more dominant use of the sword (machaira), spear (dory), and shield (hoplon/aspis). The sport was introduced at the 33rd Olympiad in 648 B.C., and together with boxing and wrestling, formed the “heavyweight events” or barea athla, so called because the sports were dominated by large, strong men, as there were no weight classes in antiquity. There is also a mythological origin, linking the sport to the exploits of the legendary heroes Herakles (known as Hercules) and Theseus. Although not created in Brazil, this MMA fighting system came to Brazil after being recreated by two Japanese. Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki.
