I have a 2-1 Lenovo for work because I don't really need anything too powerful since I don't really edit video or anything and I have a ps5 for my games :D
As a content creator, it is very important that we choose the right device for us to use and to know the possible options as well! This is very detailed and I love how you explain every components, makes so much clearer if its worth it or not! Great review for sure! ❤
Great review! I bought myself one of these purley because of the screen. I do wish the refresh rate was higher but well worth the trade off for the image quality you get on these
I have an xps 15 but it was the cheapest spec one except for the 4k screen. I know it might not be the fastest but I really appreciate the build quality and great screen. I'm not a power user so it's been fine for me. Great review as always!
Great review! Looks like a solid machine but as you mentioned, seems to be better choices out there. It's always seems the way that gaming laptops seem better spec'd but "content creator" laptops have okay specs with better screen and bq. Wish someone could just mesh the two together.
I never realy understood who bought these kinds of laptops before so it's useful to hear your experience with it. I have a razerblade 15 from 2022 and even though it's not as powerful as this xps 17, it's more than enough for me and looks much cooler imo.
Great to be back here you guys! Love your reviews as I always learn something new from you no matter what you review! The way you present the product it's very professional so no wonder your channel it's doing well! Keep them coming!
Of course you tested performance and gaming hahaha just like Lieles. I have the xps 15 wit all the details and personalization it ended being 2500$ USD, Lieles has the alienware X17R2 and he is in love with it, but this one was close to 4500$ so he better love it 😂 I would agree with the design points, I just made the mistake of ordering my keyboard in white and typing, especially at night is a nightmare. Wonderful review Aaron and Wera. We always learn something new with your reviews.
It's a beautiful laptop, and I really want a 17" screen, and Dell's xps 17 in a near 15" form factor is great. I have been waiting to buy for 2024 hoping Dell would add the 6e or even 7 wifi instead of just 6 wifi, and maybe 1080p camera, and see if yet further cooling and battery life improvements might come in. It was a very nice improvement in that regard from the 9720 to this 9730. Sadly, I just learned that in 2024, apparently January, Dell will be coming out with a 16" and no more 17" versions. Bummer. So I may just buy this 9730 before they run out, or I may wait and see what this new 16" will be like. Have you heard anything about the new 16" xps dell plans on for 2024?
Hey there! Haven't heard anything about a 16inch model but if they did and released them with updated specs, I imagine all the 2023 models would get a decent discount :)
Thanks for the review! I have the 15" sister model (9530, i9, 4070, FHD). It's a good machine but value for performance and quality, I find it exorbitant (3200 CAD). I simply wouldn't purchase it with my own money; company subsidized. In any case, I much prefer my 16" M1 Pro, the only downside being the usual "it doesn't game" scenario. It's older (2021) but still outperforms the XPS (2023). Battery life, screen quality, and sound alone outclasses the XPS. None of this means, however, that the XPS is a bad machine.
I'm in the same boat! I only have about $2,000. Dell has broken my heart with this. I need a performance laptop for content creation and editing. Something that can handle Adobe premiere as well as afterfx I'm always learning and everything to me sounds equally important in case I want to get into some blender stuff later with my movie stuff. Gpu graphics as well as RAM and memory I also don't know much about computer specs 😭. Too complicated for me. I'm a design content creation type of guy. I want to open a marketing and advertising business. I'm currently on an ancient Dell from 2010 and it's horrid but it's been better than nothing. Zero interest in gaming stuff 😅. Also important is a backlit keyboard but I absolutely refuse ANYTHING MacBook or Apple products! Also I don't have a legit place to keep a desktop so unfortunately that's out of the question for now 😭 Please help! 😭@@RudyVisuals
Outside of adjustable RAM, I cannot take the Dell XPS 17 seriously for full-time video editing career. It is nice for an event once in a while, but the Asus ZenBook Pro 14x and M1/M2/M3 MacBook Pros have taken the lead for routine video editors. The Dell XPS 17 is still great for programming and non-software engineering. Examples: C# programmer, C++ programmer, Python developer, Azure data engineer using Java/Scala/Python, Civil engineer, Mechanical engineer, Automotive engineer, or Architect.
This laptop seems to have many strong selling points. However, TBH a 720p webcam, 60 Hz display and apparently some random faulty touchpads, at that price tag... I went ahead and checked those Asus. The Rog series seems pretty good. Would you say they have comparable built quality to the XPS? Is the touchpad any good (smooth, responsive, ...)? Do you think the 240 Hz of the Rog beats the XPS UHD+ despite the Rog's QHD+?
We didn't spend our own money on the xps, it was provided by work so for me personally, if it was my own money I'd go for a more gaming focused laptop like the zephyrus series. I really like high refresh rate screens so the 60hz felt like a big downgrade. I also think you're paying a lot for nice build quality and an amazing screen over actual specs. In terms of QHD over 4k, I think 4k is really nice but going down to qhd, I don't feel a huge difference except for maybe editing photos but just for content consumption qhd is a nice sweet spot. Hope that helps!
Thanks for this informative video! I wanted to ask what you think would be a good purchase for a laptop thats good for simple gaming *sims* lol. I manly want one for video editing that also wont break the bank.
Hello. Your opinion please. Which will You advise to buy. Right now at this moment this laptop with 4k screen option with 16/512, graphic card RTX 4050 and i7 processor cost 2000$ same price as new Macbook pro 14 inch M3 pro 18/512 or to buy 200$ discounted 1800$ Macbook pro 14 inch M2 Pro 16/512, there is a one more big discount on best buy M2 pro same laptop for 1600$. I need a new machine for my professional work, i am a professional food photographer so i only use two programs Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, i do not do any video shoot and edit. Please your opinion
I think they would perform quite similarly for photo editing so I think it really just depends if you're more comfortable with Mac OS or Windows. That being said, working with a 17inch screen is going to be so much nicer than a 14inch!
Thank you for this great review, could you please give me a buying advice my budget is Maximum 1,5K and i need a laptop for video editing, graphic design and content creation, any suggestions? thank you!
Nice to see a filmmaker youtuber not being a mindless Apple shill who actually knows their tech! My tip would be to go the sub $2000 gaming laptop route and just buy a color accurate monitor later down the line. I agree this xps 17 is not worth it.
Haha thanks! Honestly, since Apple has ditched intel, the new models with the m1/m2 chips are actually pretty decent. I'm just not a fan of their business practices and how restrictive the OS is.
@@RudyVisuals I think so too but I still hate them for overpricing everything and then marketing their computers to people who don't know what they are actually buying.
Honestly both awesome at this point, just be careful what spec you go for with both as the entry level models don't really cut it so make sure to do your research and get one with enough juice for what you need.

64gb overkill for gaming but very useful for video editing and music production for sure. XPS has always been overpriced like macs because of thin and sleek design.
I'd you're playing a graphically intensive game like cyberpunk it does get quite warm after an hour or so. For less demanding games like CS and LoL I can play all night and it doesn't really get noticeably hot for me.
A very color accurate monitor is very expensive tbf so to have it on a laptop is why it's expensive but agree it's overpriced for what you get. Still better value than a macbook.
That's true. I think the new macbooks since they've switched from intel to the new m1/m2 chips are pretty good now, just not a fan of the OS/ecosystem myself.

This review isn't really useful because you are reviewing a model that most people won't buy. The vast majority of consumers are going to buy the base model and maybe bump up the ram or the GPU. When you say that it isn't worth the money, there are much less expensive models available. If find it extremely frustrating that I can never find reviews of the models that I would actually buy.

Hey Aaron, do you think an xps 13 is a good choice for basic editing?
Depends on what spec but I'd suggest going for the bigger xps15 for the bigger screen alone. Editing video/photos on a 13 inch screen is not great.
Really nice review! Seriously nice looking machine but just not one I would buy for myself.
Yes agreed. This was provided by Weronika's work so we definitely wouldn't have used our own money if it was our choice!

Why no AMD option for the xps?
I don't think dell offer these in the xps lineup but they do in some of their inspiron and alienware models I believe.
What mouse do you use with this laptop.??

64gb overkill for gaming but very useful for video editing and music production for sure. XPS has always been overpriced like macs because of thin and sleek design.
Very true!
How is cooling when you try to game for an hour or so on this? Will it limp itself instantly or can you do an afternoon on it when plugged in?
I'd you're playing a graphically intensive game like cyberpunk it does get quite warm after an hour or so. For less demanding games like CS and LoL I can play all night and it doesn't really get noticeably hot for me.
For 2200 USD im expecting 1TB of storage. Come on Dell!
Can this be used as an alternative to precision mobile workstations
From my POV, the XPS is prosumer at best. Precision is a business grade workstation. It really depends on the individual user needs and budget.
A very color accurate monitor is very expensive tbf so to have it on a laptop is why it's expensive but agree it's overpriced for what you get. Still better value than a macbook.
That's true. I think the new macbooks since they've switched from intel to the new m1/m2 chips are pretty good now, just not a fan of the OS/ecosystem myself.
haha come on, a large part of the price of your unit is the massive storage and RAM... bring those down to 1-2TB and 32GB and it's like 30-40% cheaper
I mean that's pretty much what I say in the video - if you have to have an xps 17, don't go for the high end spec as it's not worth it.
Does it get very hot/noisy?
Sorry we didn't include this in the review. It's pretty decent, only really noisy and hot when you render videos or after long gaming sessions.
Haha I remember the old gw2 days when we used to complain abut 10 fps in world vs world!

Yes :D
I don't understand how a device with so much keyboard flex is considered premium.
I have one since 11 month, 9 repair attempts, 5 Motherboards.... a heap of crap!
For some having the high quality screen is the main USP of the xps 17. A desktop would make much more financial sense though 100%
Yeah could definitely build a similar performing pc with a color accurate monitor for much less!
Does it have reflections? Because its a touch screen..making less clarity compared to matte non-touch screen.
Slightly yes but only when there is a very harsh light. In most scenarios I don't notice reflections at all.
battery life?? :(
In Vietnam everyone just wants apple even though nobody knows what spec they are even buying - they just watch the apple logo
I think that applies to most apple customers in the world tbh 🙃
XPS 15+17 are good for photo editing, decent for light video editing but not realy for gamers tbh.
