  • Hey this is Ryan with Beer by The Numbers, and in 2020 America has faced a whole host of problems coming to a head. Covid 19, police brutality, food insecurity, and threats to our civil liberties just to name a few. Craft brewers, like every other industry, have struggled to find their place in the solutions to all these problems. Amongst all the changes and innovations brewers have been pumping out in 2020, cause based collaboration beers have exploded in popularity.
So it’s time for this critical thinking beer nerd to take a hard look at beers for a cause. Are they really a successful way to get resources towards important charities? Or are they just a flukey marketing gimmick, and possibly illegal at that?

Hey Ryan, great channel, great content! Just make sure to use a pop filter in front of your mic when your record the voiceover. You can also try putting a high pass filter (HPF) at 100hz to reduce the plosives on your Ps and Bs. Cheers!

When a brewery gives to charity I call it "Ale-truism."

I heard about that story when we were doing that program that's sad that it was that many breweries that pocked the pledge money. Great beer to brew and drink though.

I can't judge the motivation, but I wonder how much it has to do with the pressure to be involved in all these causes and not seem like a brewery doesn't care. I don't care what a business owner's politics or beliefs are unless they begin to market their business by them. Then I may choose to patronize or not patronize a business. I think that businesses should operate apolitically and generally amorally. If the owner wants to be public politically or morally on their own time separate from the business, that is fine. It has only been in the last 10 years where businesses felt the need to "make a statement". I would think that the breweries who brewed the beer and profited but did not send the profits would be in the most danger of a lawsuit and maybe they should face one for improperly inducing people to buy off of a false pretense.

No doubt that social pressures can play a big role as to whether or not a brewery chooses to join. Great point. Cheers!
