In 1986, just 40 years ago, news copy was produced by typewriter, telephones were land lines, women who worked were generally in support roles, & politicians caught in a scandal felt obliged to resign. Having lived through the 80’s I find the subsequent pace of technological and social change extraordinary, of mixed results, and somewhat frightening. The dark under belly of power, however, remains as constant as hell.

Now, very few people do either.
I'm not sure the newspapers have changed; rather, we have.

I saw this movie many years ago. I will enjoy watching it once again. A short history of Britain 's secrets legislation. In 1889, the Official Secrets Act provided criminal sanctions for breaches of the law. In 1911, the law was updated and broadened to include criminal penalties for obtaining or disclosure of information without authorization. In 1989, the law created offenses for the unlawful disclosure of official information by government employees. It removed the public interest defense.
The Defense of the Realm Act of 1914 (DORA) gave the government wide-ranging powers during the war period. It could requisition land and buildings for the war effort. It could make regulations creating criminal offenses.
Now, although this film is fiction, it uses actual events that occurred. Two nuclear incidents did occur around nuclear bombs being damaged in 1956 and 1961. These events were concealed and not revealed until decades later in 2003. There was a sexual scandal known as the Profumo affair in 1961 involving a Russian spy and a British politician involved with the same woman. Now my question is do you think the 2 people who revealed the cover up survived? They don't show the reporter in the last scenes. Perhaps they were hospitalized or out of the country. What do you think?
