- Gibson TV’s award-winning docuseries, “The Process,” is returning for a second season! This time we’re taking you behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the physical process of making our acoustic guitars. “The Process” is an exploration into our newly expanded acoustic factory in Bozeman, MT, featuring interviews with the talented craftspeople that hand-make these beloved guitars and deep dives into the art of guitar making.
In the first episode, “The Process: How Tops, Backs, and Sides Are Created,” Robi Johns, Senior Product Development Manager, and Don Ruffatto, Product Development Manager, walk through the beginning steps of crafting acoustic guitars in a factory that does more handwork than any other major manufacturer.
Watch the full episode to hear the history of the factory and see the passion that goes into each and every guitar.

Thank You Gibson
I work as a chemist and have been playing guitar for 25 years now but I would happily quit my job and make less money just to be able to work at the Gibson factory in that beautiful setting making guitars all day.
Won't mind to buy a Gibson SJ 200 in the USA collecting it directly from the factory after a tour....
That would also be a super custom as I want to collect it there and then add the logo designed by me onto it on the heel carved , can only dream about it....
03:00 - What he says about Gibson giving a strong midrange for expressive purposes is true and something that did raise questions relative to Martin D series. Various models just have that sound. My first HQ guitar was a new Gibson B-25. I was taking lessons and the action was killing me. No one bothered to say they come that way so you can have the action taken down to suit you! So, if you have a new clunky Guild, for example, adjust the action.
Very interesting and inspiring video!! Makes me wanna go to the guitar shop right away 😊. Does anyone know the intro song or is it an own blues composition?
8:08 Aha! Production floor employee not in her twenties. Now, she could claim to be an experienced guitar builder. The rest of the crew are GAINING experience.
The way that Robi Johns talks in this video is….I can’t describe it. You can feel that he is so passionate about creating these beautiful masterpieces. I could just sit and listen him talking for hours :)
I bet the smell in that factory is divine 🤤. Love the smell of wood
It would seem like Gibson are working hard to turn around some poor management/decisions during the mid-late teen years of this millenium. Their, err, "robot tuners" on some of their electrics while kind of "50's futuristic" wasn't a hit and dealers especially were alienated by their bossy, top down attitude. The actual guitars fortunately are still mostly great. Especially fond of their acoustics (own a couple) and so glad to see a harmonious vibe coming from that side.
Love my Gibson guitars!
I currently own two J-45 models and a J-185; Absolutely love them. Still chasing that elusive Hummingbird...
So cool that they are finally showing the acoustic division some video love! Looking forward to more
Thanks so much for watching! More episodes are coming soon!
Can't tell you how much I love my J45. Best sounding acoustic I've ever heard. Thank you Gibson
Been gigging a G45 out of this factory since they came out in 2019. The quality and sound of it is outstanding and it’s just getting better with age. ❤🤘
I'm about to start working here, I'm pretty excited
Complain all you want to about Gibson this and Gibson that, but they build wonderous works of art.
Outstanding video. So impressed by the craftsmanship in Gibson acoustic guitars. Purchased an LG-2 Western Nathaniel Rateliff this past year and recently a J-45 Cherry - both from Gibson Garage in Nashville - thank you Patrick! Just love your guitars and thank you for your dedication to your craft and to musicians!
We're so glad to hear that you love your LG-2 and J-45! Thanks so much for watching and stay tuned for more episodes!
Gibson #1
Great series
Wow....this was fantastic....and love the music!!
Played by Argentinian Nico Bericiartua.
My beauty J45 was bornt here!
Always top notch quality filming and audio from Gibson TV. I love that they share their process and the artists that make sound come to life and the care that's taken.
Robby Johns!!!! Wow.. Thank you, that helped me know what model would be best for me right away.
On a side note... I would love to see Gibson upgrade the Les Paul Modern. Especially the neck joint, and carry the paint all around... you have some great colors to choose from. That's a process I'd love to see!
Always on the lookout for the next video.😀
This entire series is pure gold
It's crazy to see how we as human beings can create great things and achieve amazing stuffs
One day Ill buy me first LP Standard!
I just got a J200 Studio Rosewood such a fantastic sound ❤
I got to get a tour of the place when Ren Feguson was still in charge in 2006. It was one of 25 Hummingbird Authentic's made in 2005.
Got a 2022 J45 last month,amazing guitar
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Both my J200 and J45 came from this place. I wish they had come from Kalamazoo BUT they're just as good now as those same models were made back then.
YOU WISH!!! Happy New Year from Michigan
@@dougjones5664 HAHAHA He can keep telling himself that! Kalamazoo here.
Who did the background music? Great playing!
Great video John. Happy New Year.
Great vid. Hopefully I get my lefty Hummingbird soon.. man it’s been a wait 😢
08:12 .. my god that fretboard looks so beautiful..
Thanks for making my 2018 SJ-200!
I live here!❤️
One of the best videos of this kind I have seen. Very inspiring, makes me wanna pick up my Gibson J185, best acoustic I’ve ever owned.
I would never be able to work at the Gibson Factory. I care so much about Gibson guitars that I would be obsessed with everyone on the freaking line and I would get nothing done and be fired in the first week.
🌴😎💯
Only owning Gibson Les Pauls so far but I already played a couple of Gibson accoustics. Outstanding quality and I'll be buying one or two in the future.
Hopefully someday I could afford a j200. Grail guitar for me.
I use to have 1954 Gibson j50 I loved it
Love this video & the series. I loved the part when Justin said they "make guitars for people that save up their whole lives for these guitars". I'm one of those people. It took a long time for me to get my 2011 Hummingbird and I love it! It was well worth the wait! Thank you Gibson Montana!
I am so thrilled this video is out! I have sent it to lots of family members all over, including Montana! This video quality was great, keep up the good work Gibson!
damn all this propaganda and you guys still cant wipe out the buffing compound in the guitars cavities. only the best attention to detail for $5k+ !
They make fine guitars. Got me a Sheryl Crow SJ, a Keb Mo Bluesmaster who are just superb. They could’ve mentioned Ren Ferguson who basically brought it together again in Bozeman. I also have a J-45 Country & Western in natural from a centennial series in 94 that sounds as woody as deep.
Ren's the Best! He left in 2010 cause of Henry J..
I hope that Gibson management is as passionate about their staff as the staff is about their work.
It's a wonderful place to work! Very professional
This is a great episode. I need to go back to watch last season. I am the proud owner of a 1993 J-30 that I have had since it was new - it has always been an awesome guitar. The neck and neck angle are still perfect and the sound is indescribably wonderful. I take care of it and don't take any crazy chances with it. Anyone that sees it and plays it is astounded. I bought a 2022 L-00 last year. I am also lucky enough to have a 2020 ES-335 and a 2021 USA Epiphone Casino. Both of those are awesome. It did take me awhile to find a 335 that I bonded with, but this one is great! I guess I am a fan!! If I ever am lucky enough to get another Gibson, it would probably have to be a Custom shop all mahogany J-45. I missed the chance on those when they were issued in a limited run a few years ago. Maybe one day. 'Til then, I will keep playing the ones that I am lucky enough to have. Thank you Gibson!
Love my J45 Studio. The song at the start of this. Anyone know what it’s called or what i could search for to learn something similar?
Hi Christian! The intro was created for us by Nico Bereciartua. You can check him out on Spotify here: open.spotify.com/artist/79KJ0gUMjDNnDWrT9szmZM?si=FB0x0konRXSYJhWLW56y-Q. Thanks for watching!
The passion is inspiring. I'm the proud owner of a J15, and I've just placed an order for a Songwriter.
Loved the first season of The Process. Thanks for making another one...
I love my 74 SJ DELUXE and my 2018 J200 " Citation" my "go to" players.😊🎸🎸
@OfficialGibsonTv what is up??
@OfficialGibsonTv what is up?
I never get tired of this kind of video... love the passion they're putting into every piece of wood.
Thanks! Awesome video!
Great video
Sensacional
Love my g45 studio thank you Gibson
Best bit was when they made the guitars.
Great insight to get some feel for how they're made. I don't have a Gibson acoustic... YET.
Great job with the theme song Nico!!!
Absolutely Love this craftmanship!!! Love that the CNC Machines are giving us the best quality guitars ever!!!
So my Gibson J45 Banner was here.
0:14 Buffing with the string on ?
Proudly the owner of one of yours, Great work folks. My audiences immediately melted into the sound. Thanks! :)
Why glue two pieces of wood together instead of using one larger piece?
most highly figured woods don't come in sizes that big the way they are milled, and if they do, the price is significantly more. It is much more economical to use 2 book-matched pieces. Gibson will do it for a price, as do other makes (PRS, etc..). GIbson uses a lot of wood, but even so those are the main reasons.
I am blessed to own a 1991 J-200, that is an absolutely fabulous instrument. Much agreed on the mid-range tonality of Gibson acoustics ... there is some of that, even in the hollow body and semi-hollow electrics. In my 61+ years of experience as a musician, I believe that this mid=range tonality supports the human singing voice the best.
I got my first Gibson 3 months ago…j45…blows me away. Love it to death. Better than other acoustic I’ve ever played. Beautiful and well made. Nuff said.
Bought my J-45 a couple of weeks ago at Esse Music store, Italy. Best sound ever ❤️
If… I wanted to be the next Jimi Hendricks…then, I need a Fender!!
Who approved these videos! 😂
Jimi started playing an acoustic, also played a gibson V alot from 67-69. That being said, he was obviously just stating a goat. Would Post Malone have appeased you..
These guys do an amazing job making such beautifully looking and sounding instruments!
I rented a Gibson J45 a few years ago to record a few songs. It never made it back to the store. Once I heard it, there was no going back to anything other than it. Best guitar ever. My ears and my microphones heard it right away.
You are appreciated!! Thank you - greeting from the islands in the middle of the atlanic ocean
Me being me. I haven't made it past the intro playing. Said 12 string, :30 to :54 seconds has buzzing that bugs me. I'd have to set said guitar up better than that for me to dig playing it. Okay, enough of me being me. For now.
Gibson is making the best acoustic guitars it ever has at Bozeman - they look and sound great!
The fact that Gibson made a whole series dedicated to showing the making of their guitars speaks volumes. Looking to buy a J45 and this is heavily influencing my decision
love these videos!
I have the pleasure of owning a number of Gibson Acoustics, most of them older including a Doves in Flight, a Hummingbird, an SJ 200 Deluxe and a CS 1932 L-00. They are all unique,, and all sound and play differently. I have tried some of the newer models, but so far, nothing matches my older Gibsons. Great episode, thank you so much
Beautiful instruments. Cant afford em. So Firefly or IYV will get my business
Amazing. How has the proccess changed the last 30 years? I have a hummingbird fro 15 + years. How will it compare to a modern one? Same formula?
Is it possible to get a les paul studio with all black hardware, pickup covers, bridge stop tail.. everything black,,,anyone??
Love this Gibson .keep the "Process series going
😎✌
What about structural binding and bracing? that shouldn't be CNC'd, it should be done by hand as it needs to be adjusted depending on the properties of the wood used all throughout the instrument ...
I've been trying to get a MTM J-185 for years. No luck, thus far.
Excellent episode!! Would love and enjoy Season 2 as much as I loved and enjoyed Season 1.
"Destroying a guitar is easier then creating one"
Great series! We need season 3 about Gibson basses!!!
Love to see American craftsmanship ❤! Both my 1984 Dove and my 2020 J45 are just killer guitars- keep up the great work!
Nice one! Looking forward to the rest of the acoustic making process series, cheers for this!
First!
omg omg o my fucking god he got first nobody ever accomplished that
Notice opening guitar music. No piezo quack. Why? Not used!
I always appreciated "Handmade" to mean they all at different, slightly, and are not absolutely perfect, although at the insane cost of a Gibson, they should have free lifetime repairs, meaning totally free.
dayum, you have some fine looking ladies working there! (not that I noticed LOL)
My g45’s finger board is dead straight on the left side but wavy between each fret on the right. I never sent it in for warranty because it sounds amazing and I can’t see that side when playing. Gibson’s can be great but always check it out in person before you buy
