I am so new to this that I have not even been in a kayak yet. But I noticed this right off in this video. Thanks for explaining it. It is logical alright
I know this video is over a year old but boy does it come in handy for us, new to paddling folks. I appreciate your efforts to teach others and to put it in a away that the beginner can easily understand. It is also such a treat to not have to deal with a snob that thinks one has to start out with the best of everything to even dip a toe into the sport. Thanks for all your efforts Dan.
Hi, been kayaking for three years, never took a lesson and am now finding out after watching your what I have been doing wrong all this time! Have recently had a few close calls so hopefully I have learned what to do properly. Thank you!
I have been paddling for a while with no instruction. Realized that I am working way too hard. Thank you for the helpful instruction! Looking forward to my next trip!!!
Went paddling for the first time today with a Intex Challenger K1. Was on the water for a bit over an hour. I've seen a lot of these intro videos but none ever mentioned or warned about what happened to me. The paddling went fine thanks to videos like this, but when I got to the shore and tried to get out of the kayak, my legs would not support me. I couldn't keep my balance for a few minutes. Luckily there was someone there to help me out and support me and stop me from falling. I realized that it was like sitting on a toilet for an hour and then trying to stand up. It only lasted a few minutes but it was a big surprise.
One of the best paddling videos for beginners. I actually watched this video multiple times and learned off it. Keep these good videos coming. You're giving us great guidance
The video is EXCELLENT! I have paddled for many years, and basically learned all this by trial and error. I have a friend who now wants a kayak, and almost all he needs to know is right here. Thank you Headwaters.
62 and just bought a hybrid canoe and getting into this sport for the exercise and wanting to explore our nation's fresh waterways here in good ole Virginia !!
Just bough 2 kayaks. We’re retired and live on a small lake. The instruction was easy to understand and will help us get comfortable with our kayaks. Hoping we get good enough to eventually take them on the Boise and Snake rivers. New hobby in our 70’s. God has richly blessed us. Thx for your video.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
This video has so much beneficial information. When someone tells me they purchased their first kayak, I send them this link. They are just as grateful as I was when I first watched this video. Thanks again!
Just getting into some paddling this summer, on safe and shallow rivers, but this video was a real game changer and has already helped me so much. I never realised I could actually use my legs in paddling! :-) So thanks!
I'm in Iowa! Just bought a Mustang (Pelican) based on one of your videos. I canoed for many years, but I can no longer lift it onto the car. I'll look for a class, but I'll keep watching youtube and practicing. I'm got a slow river nearby and I'm really looking forward to getting out on it and fishing. Thanks so much for making these videos!
Mr Dan, haven't kayaked for many years. Thank you for discussing the body mechanics involved with paddling. You described all the strokes clearly and showed the streamlining of the arms, the torso, etc, thanks!
Hi Dan, My wife and I recently visited your shop and were impressed with your facility and personnel. We are just getting back in the sport after an extended, and forced, absence from all physical activities. I unfortunately had to sell my beloved Merlin XT thinking I was never going to be able to paddle again. Well, after a lot of prayer and a new, experimental medical procedure, I committed to actually paddle again. We picked up a pair of used Prodigies for an obscenely cheap price and are ready to jump back in with both feet. Your love and excitement for the sport is obvious and has re-ignited "the" spark in me again. Thanks for that and hope to meet you soon. Dave
Went out kayaking for the first time on Friday. Before I did, I watch your videos on how to get in and out of a kayak how to paddle how to stop, how to turn. It was a wonderful experience on a rented kayak at a state park. I am now ready to buy my first kayak and I did your five kayak review under $300 and it was fabulous. Thank you so much for your straight up instructions.
This was an awesome video, Dan. I learned a lot from it. The camera angle and clarity was great. I had no idea I was supposed to use my legs/push off my feet when kayaking. What a difference this made for me. Thank you!
Excellent instructions. My wife and I didn’t know there was a right/wrong way to paddle. In other words, we didn’t know what we didn’t know. Glad we saw your video!!!
"the paddle is just an anchor grabbing a piece of water" -- that is a slice of genius. Never thought of it in those words, but I'll be using that nugget, for sure.
I used to canoe in Ontario and Newfoundland, Canada on lakes and rivers and loved it...Now that I’m in Florida full time, I bought a kayak and your instructions are similar to what I remember of my canoeing days, some 35/40 years ago...Thanks for the refresher course...I’ve subscribed to your Channel.
Very helpful video! I'd appreciate more detail on actual hand positions as you paddle. Someone pointed me at this video because I have arthritis in my hands, especially my thumbs, and he wanted me to see how you use your hands while paddling (not gripping them all the time). If you could talk more about that I think it would be helpful. Lots of folks, not just me, do use the "paddle death grip" in part because they're using arms, not torso, for power. Thanks!
Absolutely superb video for a beginner such as I Watched over a dozen beginner kayak paddling 101 videos and yours is the ONLY one I downloaded and saved. Thanks for making the best beginner how to paddle a kayak video I found.
Definitely learned something! New to kayak fishing and I now know I’m paddling wrong. I will have to practice those techniques next time I’m out on the water! Thanks Dan!
Great video Dan. Really clear, accurate, and simple communication style. Makes it easy to learn. One thing I remember when I was learning is that “move the boat, not the paddle” by imagining planting the paddle in concrete, keeping it stationary. Then unwinding and rotating the torso to propel the boat forward, past the stationary paddle. Really helps to use the legs and bigger muscles of the upper body instead of the smaller arm muscles.
Dude you have definitely helped push us into kayaking we've been thinking about it and after watching a few of your videos we are definitely doing it now thank you for all of your great videos!! 💕
Just purchased kayaks for the whole family and looking forward to getting into paddle sports for the first time. Have spent LOTS of time on the Headwaters channel and want to say huge THANK YOU to Dan and crew. Awesome videos, great info, and explained in a way that any novice or experienced kayaker can benefit from. Hope one day to take a cross-country trip to visit the shop and meet the crew!
Hey thanks for the info. I went out in a kayak for the first time yesterday and am so sore today. I’ve found multiple issues with my form- sitting up straight, legs bent, the motion of the paddle...I can’t wait to go out again and do it right. Thanks again. Great beginner vid.
I bought a kayak today and went for my first row today. I knew i didn't know what i was doing and before i got out of the river I was thinking about looking a videos for instructions for experienced kayakers. This video is just what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to teach.
Thank you! I am a fan! Please continue these educational videos! I am new to this sport and want to learn more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
I just had my kayak out for the first time. Ahead of time I watched your beginner mistakes video. Extremely helpful. Once I was out I was clueless as to how to paddle correctly. I struggled, and got worn out quickly. I will be using this video the next time I’m out. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!❤️
I agree! Without a student’s reaction and feedback, it’s hard to tell whether your message is effective! In this case, it was excellent. I’ve rented kayaks a few times and just knew there was a more efficient way to do it. Looking forward to my next sojourn!
Ok, starting this out like a fanboy in that I've watched almost all of your videos. But seriously, I'm commenting on here so that you do know that yes, I have liked this video and almost all others, and yes, I have subscribed to the channel. Like most looking on here, I'm a newbie, and am just now getting into this sport (paddling, not pedaling{yet}). I've appreciated all of your videos, and have to say you do encourage, very well, us-we newbies-wanting to get into the sport of kayaking. I got to try for the first time this past weekend, 5/9/2020, which, if you don't know, is still during this crazy Covid19 thing. This video covers things I did wrong and things I did right and found myself shaking my head "yes" numerous times during this video. Thank you for all you do, and continue to do for this sport and all of its many branches. Till next time, Cheers, from South Texas.
Dan, I wanted to say thanks for the tip to use your legs for more power in the paddle stroke. I've increased my speed on flat, non-windy water and I am not working nearly as hard when only using arms. Thanks again brother.
Awesome instruction ! a natural teacher loves sharing the knowledge . This will help me keep up or impress a lady friend who shows off with her fancy Swedish foldable rigid single kayak. Me with my two person, inflatable sevylor needs all the patient, clear insruction I can get. Thanks again!👍🛶
I am a paddler. I learned in the Boy Scouts many years ago. I have paddled canoes, and kayaks, rafts in everything from flat water to oceans, bays, and class III/IV rapids. I am not a fisherman, but I want to get into kayak fishing and looking for a new boat. I watched one of your review vids on the Crescent kayak. Now I think I just fell in love. I don't want to paddle a floating dock to fish. The Crescent moved like a paddlers kayak
Mike Jordan yes exactly! I’m same as you. I’ve paddles since age seven and the modem day fishing kayaks have no soul if you’re a paddler. Crescent bucks the trends and came out with something both paddlers and fisherman can appreciate.
My jealously directed at kayakers at the lake yesterday led me to this video. I don't know why I didn't try to learn sooner, I did do it once at camp and had the time of my life, but never really tried again for some reason. So thank you for the video. 🙂And hey dog walkers @ 5:50. 😁
i just bought a kayak last year and went on my own and tried it. went ok, i took a merit badge in scouts years ago in a canoe , are the techniques the same or different? i learned alot from you even though i am 64.... i will take a lesson from someone local... thanks, Gary
I am not a kayak fisher, but a sea kayaker and I find it great that you learn people the skills of kayaking. Very important, what you're doing here! Compared to kayaking in a sit-in kayak you probably have to use longer paddles because of the width of the kayak (which makes it far more important to use your legs and torso) and I also see that your angle between the blades is 70/80 degrees. Nowadays, in sit-in kayaks most people use angles from zero to 30 degrees and inuit style paddles with long, narrow blades. However, euro style paddles are better for sit on top kayaks (must say I personally prefer them also for sit-in kayaks as well). Greetings from the Netherlands to all of you kayakers, stay safe🙂
Thank you so much for this lesson! We live in upstate NY and just got back into camping last year with our new teardrop trailer. We’re excited to start kayaking and your videos are so informative! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and passion! I subscribed to your channel ☀️ - Maria
That's me, except I RUclips searched kayaking 101 before I got into the kayak and then threw my phone n the water intentionally, then get in the kayak ;)
Who can downvote this? Great video! Thanks! I am a beginner and doing what you have said and have since changed and am paddling easier with less effort. I was putting it way too much in water and I did turn the paddle around in my hands. You’re an awesome teacher!
I officially put in a request for you to open a store in Tampa, where many of us live on or near the river (and lakes, bays, and the Gulf) and we love our kayaks! I'm sharing this video with lots of friends who, like me, will pick up important pointers to improve our strokes. Thank you!
this may have been asked previously, but I have the same question. Your blades are offset relative to each other. I assume this relates to the stroke you are teaching? So beginners should have blades that similarly are offset?
Why the f would someone not like this video...lol.ppl hate success and happiness, you helped me alot I was one the ones that bought and new it all, and we in river with lil kids...lol.keep paying it forward ,you will be blessed...
Wow. I grew up spending every holidays on the water front with canoeing, sailing and fishing being a regular everyday activity. As kids we just paddled 😂 thinking we where getting better at it as we got older. I’m 44 now and have just got into Kayaking and never knew these techniques, this will make a world of difference. Thankyou
It’s funny how people think stuff is just so simple but there’s a technique to everything I’m thinking of moving to Florida actually I’m going to and the first thing on my list is to get a kayak and start fishing down there so I’m watching kayak videos picking the brains of the people in the know thank you for your wonderful video it’s very informative
I just got my first yak this year it a lifetime kayak getting in to fishing with it enjoying every time I go out in it I never know how much fun it is until now your videos help me out a lot thank you for introducing me to the sport
Hey Dan thank you so much! I got an Angler kayak for my birthday last month from my fiance and I'm super excited. I took it out once so far...but I underestimated the distance and time I was going to have to get said distance, and by the time I made it to the place I was going to exit the river the public park that the pier was in had closed! So I got a crash course in self-taught speed paddling to try and get 4 miles away before it got Pitch Black out to where my fiance could get me out of the water LOL! A lot of these things came to me naturally luckily, but the sweeping lesson is going to be very helpful next time :-) I also had no idea if I was even holding the paddle right when I did it. Because I am a beginner and in a hurry, I got very sloppy, and because my shoulder muscles and neck muscles were not used to that motion I regretted it the next day. I am so happy I found your site now. Next time I go I will be much better prepared :-) Thanks again
Thank you for these videos i was given a kayak by a friend and figured i could sell it for a quick buck and found your videos looking up price and information and after watching an hour of videos have decided i cant wait to get mine on the water unfortunately its late and the weather is turning bad tomorrow but the next sunny day im going to go check it out and see if this hobby gets added to my outdoor lifestyle
There you go! Torso rotation! I was a whitewater guy, and basically an arm paddler until I took an ACA Whitewater course that would grant me certification as an instructor. Back in the long boat days (Dancer, Pirouette!), playing in rivers also involved eddy hopping UP stream, jet ferries, and a other moves that called for ENDURANCE. Rodeo is a different story. So this young friend who I'd taught to paddle - who was my height but with 25 lbs more MUSCLE - and who could easily out-sprint me got taught the lesson on the half mile of flat water on the Susquehanna at the bottom of the Muddy River run. We're in identical boats with matching paddles, and I ask him, 'You wanna race?' I overtook him a hundred yards from the beach (modeling the top hand punch and solid torso rotation on the way by) and didn't slow down. He was so done. So, yeah, for distance paddling in "fun-yaks" (sit on tops) and sea kayaks esp., this technique is absolutely essential both for speed and endurance.
I just upgraded to a (modest) kayak that has foot blocks. Haven't been able to take it out yet (winter) but in watching your video I'm very aware of how in my old kayak I paddled straight legged. Can't wait to experience the difference of better kayaking techniques. And THANK YOU!!!
Thanks so much for making this video. I'm 52 and just purchased my first kayak and looking forward to using a lake nearby to practice before moving onto the Shenandoah river. Thanks for the expertise that's easy to digest! Mark in West Virginia
I have been kayaking in my younger years but not enough as a hobby until the last couple years. I went out on a local river in my Tifetime Tahoma 100. The river was heavily swollen and fast because of rains all week. New trees up rooted. This video helped me to control the kayak better than I would have and whe it did roll over I knew how to get back in the boat thenks to other videos from hear.
Thank you from the heartland NE KS west of KC! I am still new at this and am so grateful to have discovered your channel! I am learning much! I just started my kayaking experience last year at 62! And our rescue pup Sadie, who hates water, loves to ride in kayaks, go figure?! If I was nearby I would be coming in your shop! You are the only one I have found in youtube land or anywhere, to help me do this properly. Appreciate this so much! Thanks
As a newbie to kayaks I enjoyed the info/demo given. I've been on/ around water most of my life, just with a motorized boat and or pirogue to Paddle.. whole different world.
I just bought 2 kayaks a sit on top and sit in, I am excited and nervous have not yet taken them out I wanted to watch some videos first thank you very helpful. I hope that my husband and I get a lot of enjoyment out of them
Thank you so much for posting this! I started kayaking with my husband, who has experience, but have been experiencing terrible shoulder/arm pain. At 1st not realizing it was because of how I was paddling. I will definitely be using your tips/instructions to practice so I can continue to kayak, which I really enjoy!
I've kayaked one other time and aside from having fun, I didn't really know what I was doing. Now I'm getting ready to buy my first kayak and appreciate you showing me what I need to know to move and stay safe on the water. Thank you!🚣😎
I love your videos and descriptions, so easy to understand and follow. I’ve been Kayaking about 8 weeks now and you’ve taught me everything I know! It’s like you taught me in the flesh. Cheers mate, I’m so glad I found your videos.
Wish I could give this 2 thumbs up. Just got a new pescador pro 12. Took it out in very windy conditions. It did very well, even against the wind. I can see how the rotating and driving technique will make paddling more comfortable
I have saved this video and come back to it time and time again to review the information all over again. I'll practice on the water and then watch the video again to see if I did it right. Thanks so much. I feel I'm getting better each time I go out.
Excellent video on rudiments of paddle stroke. I find the three biggest mistakes that beginners make are 1) They fail to push with the upper hand and thus lose nearly half the power 2) They tend to pull the paddle shaft towards them rather than rotating their torso as illustrated in this video. I find it sometimes helps to imagine that the middle of the paddle shaft is mounted on a gimbal a little less than an arm's length in front of you. You rotate your stroke around that point rather than pulling the shaft towards you. 3) Folks tend to carry their stroke too far aft. As mentioned in this video the power portion of the stroke pretty much decreases as the blade passes your hip. Carrying the power phase past that point you wind up actually slowing forward momentum rather than prolonging it as the face of the blade is pulling upwards rather than pushing forwards.
Outstanding lesson and tips! I’ve been kayaking for seventeen years while I am paddling correctly because I did watch some lessons when I first got my yak, I still got some good info from your instruction and passing this link on to some newbies I know who need to see this. Subscribed!
Great tutorial. Just started kayaking coz obviously we can't travel due to the pandemic. I took a beginner class and I found the way you explain the technique is way better than what I had.
I am only about two years late to this video, but this is fantastic...just bought a fishing kayak and decided to NOT get a peddle drive model just to save some money, and this is exactly what I needed to get started on correct paddling technique.
For those of you wondering why I offset my paddles check out this video. ruclips.net/video/6ga5UwxXIok/видео.html
why the blades are not symmetrical? like they are rotated ...
Hey Dan this is dan...I have brain injurys
I want to get stable sit on top kayak
I have service dog gsp I want to take
With me fishing and float down river
I'm weak so need to be light too..
I saw one with wheel... maybe a strap on type might be better I don't know.. I have looked at some floor plans I like
The three waters big fish12...I think
The lure... and the 12 perception..
I'm waiting open lay out...with Rutter
I like the perception because maybe
Mount a electric motor...I get nerofatige
That strikes with no warning..
The pedal drivers are more money
My Disability checks are a joke
I'm hoping the right kayak I could use to get strength back and lose weight..
Mostly shallow rivers.. some deeper ones
When I get things figured out...I might have to get out and drag around trees in water this is the weight issues mentioned
Small gravel pits and lakes is my other
Goals too....what do you think
It's important to me...thanks for helping me
Oh and are paddles a big deal I'm going to need one...do any the ones come with paddles?
I am so new to this that I have not even been in a kayak yet. But I noticed this right off in this video. Thanks for explaining it. It is logical alright
You are a fantastic instructor. No frills, no hype, just experience translated efficiently into knowledge. Thanks a ton for sharing this!
Thanks for the kind words. Keep it simple and make it fun!

That’s what I’m all about. This sport is to good to keep it to an elite few. I hope I speak the masses not the elite.
Dan, you are such a good teacher. I have learned so much from watching your videos.
William Wong thanks I’m glad you enjoy what we do.
Hi, been kayaking for three years, never took a lesson and am now finding out after watching your what I have been doing wrong all this time! Have recently had a few close calls so hopefully I have learned what to do properly. Thank you!

Your video should be sold with every new kayak period.
Awesome job
Janky nothing!! That camera angle is spot on!
As I said when sawing my ram slots down on my motherboard - it's not janky if it works

Getting into this at 66. Very clear, many thanks (UK).
Exact same thing! Montreal, Canada

So, I have been paddling for about 50 years and I am happy to say I learned some new tips today. Great tutorial. Also, your camera rig is impressive.
I've been teaching whitewater kayaking for over 20 years. this guy is spot on. Great instruction on controlling the boat.
Nic Freeman thanks for the kind words Nic. Trying to bring good info to the kayak fishing sit on top kayak world.

Never considered the foot pedals. Can’t wait to apply this, thanks!
Could change your life 😜
First time kayaker. I just ordered a fishing kayak to go fishing in. Never been on one. Your video is very informative. Thank you.
Great camera mount.
Dan, I wanted to say thanks for the tip to use your legs for more power in the paddle stroke. I've increased my speed on flat, non-windy water and I am not working nearly as hard when only using arms. Thanks again brother.
Another awesome video Dan, looking forward to some more instructional videos from you.
That was great info! Thank you! I am a new paddler, looking forward to try these techniques
i just bought a kayak last year and went on my own and tried it. went ok, i took a merit badge in scouts years ago in a canoe , are the techniques the same or different? i learned alot from you even though i am 64.... i will take a lesson from someone local...
thanks,
Gary
I subscribed to your channel ☀️ - Maria
really nice straightforward presentation of the basics! It's obvious that Dan is one with his kayak!
This is me:
Unloads kayak
Gets in kayak
RUclips search “kayaking 101”
Drops phone in the water
That's me, except I RUclips searched kayaking 101 before I got into the kayak and then threw my phone n the water intentionally, then get in the kayak ;)
@@shred5 :))))
Bruh I just dropped my new iPhone in the river too. First time in the water
Sorry to hear that...
Actually?!?
Who can downvote this? Great video! Thanks! I am a beginner and doing what you have said and have since changed and am paddling easier with less effort. I was putting it way too much in water and I did turn the paddle around in my hands. You’re an awesome teacher!
Dan that is a great video Well Done, Please post more videos like that.
I officially put in a request for you to open a store in Tampa, where many of us live on or near the river (and lakes, bays, and the Gulf) and we love our kayaks! I'm sharing this video with lots of friends who, like me, will pick up important pointers to improve our strokes. Thank you!
does the angle of the paddles make a big difference? should they be equal or off angle or is that all preference?
this may have been asked previously, but I have the same question.
Love the chanel. Some good tips that I'll take to the water.
Beautiful looking paddle😍
Great video. Wife and I just bought kayaks and discovered it was trickier than we thought. I grew up on a lake and used a row boat a lot.
We're in identical boats with matching paddles, and I ask him, 'You wanna race?'
I overtook him a hundred yards from the beach (modeling the top hand punch and solid torso rotation on the way by) and didn't slow down. He was so done.
So, yeah, for distance paddling in "fun-yaks" (sit on tops) and sea kayaks esp., this technique is absolutely essential both for speed and endurance.
Thank you so much. You are a teacher and we can be better on the water. Bless you and I will keep watching your videos.
I share your video with all my friends who are starting the sports. Thanks again.
I thought I recognize this location. We just went for the first time this Saturday and we loved it. Thank you for this video.
Great spot. Thanks for watching!
The best instruction for this on RUclips. Thanks man.
A most excellent bit of instruction. Clear, concise and helpful, both in explanation and demonstration. Well done!!
WoW! I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your video. I had no idea how much I was doing wrong.
Thanks for the tips. Your channel does help new Kayakers how not to work hard when propelling their kayak on the water. God bless
Thanks
Wow, this was super helpful for a newbie! Thank you very much 🤩
As a newbie to kayaks I enjoyed the info/demo given. I've been on/ around water most of my life, just with a motorized boat and or pirogue to Paddle.. whole different world.
I just bought 2 kayaks a sit on top and sit in, I am excited and nervous have not yet taken them out I wanted to watch some videos first thank you very helpful. I hope that my husband and I get a lot of enjoyment out of them
Thank you for a truly excellent video. It has made a giant difference on how I paddle and made kayaking much more enjoyable.
Im very excited to take this out on the water and practice. The paddling aspect is every bit as important to me as the fishing aspect. Paddle power!
Dan, You offer a great instructional video here. All paddlers should watch this.
This is exactly what I've needed. Thanks so much.
Incredibly informative and the camera angle is top notch! Thanks for sharing and teaching. Big help.
I went out on my friends kayak the other day for my first time and I just ordered one today. I will definitely put your info to good use.
That’s fantastic. I’m glad they are helpful.
I just started paddling in a fishing kayak. This video is exactly what I needed to see!! Thanks!!
Outstanding lesson and tips! I’ve been kayaking for seventeen years while I am paddling correctly because I did watch some lessons when I first got my yak, I still got some good info from your instruction and passing this link on to some newbies I know who need to see this. Subscribed!
iv'e been kayaking for 7 years , your video is awesome great info i needed that refresher course keep the videos coming
Just bought Vanhunks 9ft manatee kayak.
This video is going to definitely help me. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much. It really helped my two growing up Boy Scouts to start loving Kayaking. Your video just rocks my man.
Nice video. I would also recommend a paddle leash for safety reasons.
