Those people get surprised when they see Western brands are still sitting on the shelves of Russian grocery stores. So what is the situation with Western food companies in Russia in 2023? Interesting that you can film so openly in supermarkets and all the people around you... here in Germany people would go crazy. I don't understand the sanctions anyway because America is involved in so many conflicts around the world, also Ukraine! and they were never sanctioned..
Russia is way more chill and free than west, filming in western supermarket would get your ass kicked fast either by staff or customers. Could be Russian apathy, they truly dont care

i'm not an expert in relation to sanctions, but i think sanctions are not suppose to impact the food supply for the population, as i understand is it's rather to impact the government to make it more difficult to finance the war. The more the government is insisting in investing in the war might lead to very high inflation and this will have a much bigger impact for the population and the ability to be able to buy food than the sanctions.
But you must understand Russia is vast and sanctions aren't stopping Russia from attacking Ukraine

The goal is probably to create unrest in the country to turn people against the president, because the president is responsible for the situation that has been created.
I'm from Iran and our country is in second place of the most sanctioned countries and I CAN 100% tell you that sanctions mostly affects the people NOT THE GOVERNMENT. In Iran we have the exact same situation because western food brands and any kind of American company can't enter Iran.

I know the average income is Russia is much lower (GDP per capita) than North America . $1 Canadian is 60 Rubles , that makes that coffee $14 Canadian when it sells here in Canada for $9 for Haxwellhouse and Flodgers. 1kg

Finland's Valio sold all its Russian business and Viola brand name to a local company in April 2022. New products sold under the Viola brand on the shelves of Russian stores are mistakenly reminiscent of Valio products...

@@finnmay Russia lacks high-quality milk from cows feeding primarily on hay, but the biggest problem is the lack of technologies which require a lot of time and money. And because as many as 60% of Russians spend half of their salary on food, good quality cheese is just too expensive for them...

And now 15.5million poor Russian milk cows are solemnly chewing their hay and sending their moral support to their Finnish counterparts...
Valio's spreads have never been "high quality", and the replacement product tastes the same...

strange, much of the video image is reversed. :) How does a Russian pay to buy a business if no one outside Russia accepts Rubles and foreign bank accounts are frozen? Probably the currency situation resulted in less than fair market (from a non-Russian perspective) value being paid. The situation is a long term financial disaster for Russia.'s consumers None of those businesses or industries will ever invest there again. Why do that if it loses money?
This is one of the most insightful comments here. As Ksenia mentioned, the significant brands stopped their investments, which means they are not getting much revenue there. Even if they have not left yet, they might do it soon. Because of the economic and financial instability, they will cut losses and be done with Russia anyway. I would like to see the situation in stores outside of big cities. Having 10 facilities producing different types of goods does not seem that many for a huge country like Russia.
@@smk7516 That last is a good point. Especially when we consider additional sanctions (imports) are still possible and add on that even if peace comes the West currently has no intention on lifting the sanctions for at least a decade. As wheel bearings and other vehicle parts wear out, unless the tank factory begins making truck and car parts for the food transport industry wide spread distribution of foods from those to and from those 10 factories will become problematic. Putin's advisors don't seem to be considering that.
Those western factories should be closed down a year ago.

With your last sarcastic statement of how clever it is of Russia to cheaply buy ex-Western assets - well, clever or not, it's still probably better than nationalizing the whole lot. The brands decided to pull out and lose a pretty sizeable market share - well, good for them, their choice, as long as they are willing to pay the price. I doubt anyone in Poland or Kazakhstan would be all too happy if Hellenic packed up all of their bottling lines from their 10 Russian factories and relocated them there. They probably did move all of their expat staff, probably gave good cushioned relocation packages to their top management. As long as the new owners can keep regular people employed and keep the supply chain running - I'm happy, even if i hadn't had a coke-related product in the past 10 years.

However it's available in the US I don't buy these products for over twenty years. Most of them loaded with preservatives high fructose corn syrup all those things which kill you. If I buy Coke it's bottled in Mexico and made with sugarcane. Or go to the Russian grocery and buy Russian or Ukrainian products.
It's not easy for any brand just to leave at once, and the Russian Gvt is taking advantage of that. As time pass by, and those factories, owned by the Gvt start running out of a proper maintenance, repairing, parts replacements etc I think the production will start to decline. Also, the prices of the imported materials to make the goods are harder to import due to the sanctions, so keeping the stock in a few years, maybe months will be very hard.

Your ending comment say's it all, about letting foreign companies come in build up ass business and then after all the business is built, infrastructure in place and work force hired now they have to sell below market rate value and the buyer doesn't have to build anything because it's already been done.
No foreign companies will invest in a large way in RU now. Probably not even the Chinese.

About taste of certain brands, it's actually the same with Coca cola from different countries and many other goods. This is due to the manufacturing taking place in different locations and sometimes the ingredients are also used locally rather then from the other side of the world. This can have quite big effect on the taste on things.
I do not have a problem with Mondelez and Mars producing products in Russia. The special military operation will come to an end someday and we will have trade between USA and Russia again.

Most working people can't afford to buy these brands now anyway. People have to buy cheaper supermarket own brands. Sanctions have increased energy and food prices so much most of Europe is heading into deep recession

Sometimes, these companies just lease the company to a Russian company to hide the fact that they're still in business. For me I buy local first anyways or grow my own food, so it doesn't effect me much. But I understand why people don't wanta buy from companies that still do business with Russia, example Jamisons whiskey out of Ireland. I noticed a lot of protesting against them lately.

The Rich, Well connected people are buying these factories at a greatly reduced price. Will they lower the price on their products? Also, factories need replacement parts all the time and these are not available in Russia now. So production will slow and even stop on occasion. Baby Formula was also very expensive here in the US for a while, due to the main factory producing it having to shut down due to Health concerns and maintenance issues. Russia in the 90's is a lot different than Russia today.

The truth of the matter is that some of the Russian companies are still functioning and using western company names. But this does not mean it’s a western brand. Only by name association. So you’re getting an inferior Russian product with a western name.

Please don't feel as if you have to be defensive. I know a lot of your audience is from the US. Please understand that on social media, Americans are pretty defensive and mean and not friendly. They are not the most important country in the world, although they think they are and they think that they are the only free country in the world, not realizing many countries are free. A lot of them haven't even been out of their own little town or county. Don't get me wrong, there are some fabulous Americans, I know many, but in general they are pretty harsh online.
When was the last time were you in Russia? I was last there in November 2019. I have visited every continent expect Antarctica. But I do not consider myself fabulous, by any means. You like to come off as opened-mined. But like so many "open-mind" people you are likely only open to your approved ideas and thoughts.
Boycotting a certain brand for still selling in any country, simply to protest that country's governmental actions is idiotic. Why punish the Russian consumer because of what their government is doing. I can understand military equipment, but, food? Come on. It just motivates smugglers.

Big companies open factories in foreign markets and source many ingredients locally for tax and transportation `money` reasons. A lot have left leaving the factories behind now taken over by the state, interesting you mention things tasting different, presumably because some ingredients are being sourced elsewhere. If everything proceeds as planned, Bangladesh might indeed be able to supply about 70% of what the current leader (Egypt) exported to Russia last year. Personally I like to read from Left to Right, so I'd ask you to use the camera lens on the back of your phone as opposed to the front so words look normal to me. But, it's OK really, I can read it. You are doing a great job of developing your editorial skills and your English speaking skills. Have you tried a drone yet? It make even more interesting videos. FYI: Most people don't realize that the Phosphoric Acid in Coca-Cola cleanses your palate when you drink it. Perhaps the Cola you had is not acidic enough to accomplish that. Isn't it amazing how we have been propagandized to think Russians hate us and want to come over to North America and kill us, rape our women, live in our houses and spend our money? It's always the government. In our case the government has become an entity all to itself. They stole the election in Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and America.
