The methods of picking the race for best chances yes. Qualifying and "Being allowed to participate" are two diff things. But the whole 'buying' your way in to a World Championship I never understood when coming over to tri. What other sport does their World Championships this way. I couldn't figure early on how there were 17Hr finishers...when the times to qualify weren't near that. They weren't all 70+ lol. Specialty spots for "the story" and 'Make a Wish" I get. I qualified my first year at Iron Distance BUT that was AFTER 10 years bike racing and 4 years in tri. Lots of restricted lifestyle to get there too. It's an endurance sport , it takrs time, and when I see both the impatience and or obliterated health from athletes not setting a good foundation first and thinking they should be there in 2 years. Are there some that sneak through on diff timelines, yes, but not most.
Yep, couldn't agree more. It's an interesting model. But that's how they make it accessible to the regular person. If it's too hard and too elite, nobody buys in.
Oh no doubt. As if growing old isn't bad enough, it's really bad in triathlon if you wanna KQ. I'm in the 25-29 and I know I only have 2 years left to try and KQ before I'm moved up to the AG with more sharks....I guess I'm waiting until im 70 lol.
IMO, sponsors exemptions and bike deals shouldn't be viewed as qualifications. Qualify, implies earning it. Those other ways, are just a means. Not saying they shouldn't be taken (if one choses), but don't lump them in with people who actually do the work and earn the spot. I personally would never be satisfied doing Kona by any other way then legit qualifying. Even getting a spot at a 70.3 seems a bit of a 'spoiler', to me.
@@TriathlonTaren I don't care about what others think... I'd know, and that's what matters. I wouldn't want to tell my Kona story with having to explain that I I didn't actually qualify, I just got in by one of these other ways. For me, that lessons the achievement and that's why I've never entered the lottery or these other means you've mentioned aren't appealing.
Absolutely right Taren! Being from the big Island and watching these guys in the lead up to the race, I have nothing but respect for every single athlete, no matter how they earned their spot in the race.
You didn’t mention the Honu 70.3 and China 70.3 Ironman races. The Honu alone offers 25 qualifying spots for only locals and 25 for non-locals. I would imagine the China 70.3 might be even easier.
Thanks. I Have to qualify one day. It's killing me. I've done two 12hr IRONMAN'S (UK and Lanzarote) on well, no real training at all. So I'm stopping running for the next few months and just biking.
@@TriathlonTaren . I have been running with a shin stress fracture for 3 1/2 year's. Overdue a rest to help it heal. Also finding time to run can be stressful. My kids come first before running. (only just) 🤣
Hm, I'd say if someone aims for transcontinental IM venues, there may be climate, jet lag and travelling time issues (just like IM Kona itself). So I think it's good to look how many many qualifying slots there are in in attainable IM race and if the biking/running conditions suit you well. Anyway, thanks for showing the vast range of opportunities to get to Kona!
Is rapid reboot offering any discounts for trianiacs? I was thinking of picking up a pair of boots, but I was going to get the normatec.... but I'm reconsidering esp with such a price diff. Any how... keep up the vids and hope your back heals fast!
Hi from France What about qualifying for Nice 2019?😉 Come on Taren, France awaits you😎 Strangely I'm losing the will to go to Kona one day. It's got to be in relation to my feeling fed up with air travel...😩
Even though all of this ways are legit I still believe that, at least when I try to qualify, I will do it the old fashioned way and try to race the best that I possibly can and get a spot based on my hard work and perseverance to get there. I think the island has that kind of magic. But still, there´s people who won´t want to wait that long to get there and it´s still ok as long as Ironman allows it. Taren in my opinion Kona is not just another nice race, but a place where one must earn his chance to race, and (again, it´s only my opinion) I think you should race the distance first and see how it feels, and how hard the training is and all of the other factors that come into play in such a demanding event (it´s not just double 70.3, it´s a completely different world). Best regards! Would love to see you race Kona and the coverage in the near future tho!
30. But that's nuts. I didn't realize they were doing that! I thought they had done away with KQ spots at 70.3s. Regardless, I'm not flying to the other side of the pond for that!

Yup big money or big performance if you want to stay home to qualify. Otherwise still need a good to excellent performance at the right time of year, for people who can afford to go somewhere by plane and afford accommodation for acclimatisation. The model of Ironman is to protect its mature markets, while extending into new ones, such has high populations, such as South East Asia. Unsure if this is a fair/ethical qualification system and what would be better. One option maybe to split two events over the week, one for AG championship and one for the elite professionals championship. Notably, its also worth remembering Ironmans can also be discontinued, such as Melbourne, so forcing athletes to move further for a KQ.

Good Advices Taren! Can you make a video with details of cost for Hawaii Ironman? thank's and keep on man!
C'mon Taren give yourseld some credit. A KQ for you the old fashioned way isn't that unrealistic!
I'm in the MOSt competitive age group there is!

Triathlon Taren and that means what???? It’s called world championship for a reason. Qualify like everyone else.

I have missed kona 3 time but ever time am getting closer . Was so close on my last one
Keep at it, myf riend!
Instead of people buying their way in they should just open more qualification slots. But moneys.
Awesome advice!
I'm gonna start some Sh*t...
What's harder? KQ or BQ?

All that Cairns footage, is that a hint of where you are racing next year?!
No, just happened to be the footage I could get my hands on for this video.
Cherry picking races? Aka Rachel McKinnon.

What ever happened to the shoes you picked up last year at Kona?? Lol
My plan is to live it vicariously through you, Taren. You’ll be there sooner rather than later I think.

yes, I believe there will be a discount coming for folks who sign up to the Training Platform! (Or who already backed it via the Kickstarter.)

how do u check the acceptance rate for races
Kandy Powell yes I’ve never found that either!
