Just getting into tri and these videos are really growing on me. At first I was like “this dude is out there.” Now I freaking love him. Man, you’re a goof and you own it!
I think the last thing you mentioned about signing up for a race is spot on. Having that race, that goal, will really help motivate you in making your workouts purposeful instead of just going through the motions.
I’ve done 6 triathlons with no wetsuit and with a road bike I’ve had since 1993. It depends what your goals and reasons for triathlon are. “Need” is relative
Yes, and I always say that. But I get asked, literally day in and day out, what's essential. A lot of people don't want to start until they have all of the good gear.
if someone doesn't like the cold open waters they might want a wet suit. I don't think he said that no one could do it without one. Need is relative, so why did you even watch the video? I love all the know it alls. Just go make your own video
Great advice, this is basically all the equipment I have used from short distance to ironman races. To the injury prevention gear my favorite is a yoga mat, yoga is a big help for me in that area.
I would add to this list: a running watch, maybe a Garmin forerunner 235. Good motivation for getting out there and running. A good set of earphones that don’t fall out of your ears. Join a triathlon team for motivation and information. A running cap and good sunglasses. For swimming a pair of flippers and hand paddles. Also make sure your bike has a speedo and km counter.
@triatholon Taren ..thanks, new to cycling and plan to tri in the future. YOU are awesome at explaining and breaking things down in everyday language for all of us newbies to understand. Thanks
Hi Taren: I’ve been loving your channel and I’m a runner using the tri disciplines for training, I haven’t told my partner yet that I want to do the closest local Olympic distance yet. Your channel has really helped my swimming in a short time (3:00/100m - 2:35/100m) I also lost a large amount of weight like you (130lb loss, 307-177, 5 year accomplishment) I try not to sound like a know it all and try to take as much advice to help me succeed or be safer, so I hope I can help you here, without offending you, your front straps on your helmet are adjusted extremely dangerously, u rotate your helmet back to lift your glasses with your helmet snapped closed, this is also going to happen when you have a frontal crash and I would really hate not to be able to watch your channel since your hurt. Please, please, please!!! for your life, tighten those front cheek straps.
I love my Trainiac bike jersey. Done OLY and IM Austin 70.3 bike and run in it... great fit and comfort. Love the pockets! A bit loose on the arms and since its real bike specific it could get a bit warm on the run if 28C plus... (but thats what its supposed to do... protect on the bike). Also great for Brick workouts! Ohhhh and those bike imbalances Taren talks about... I think I have them all... 😬
Hey Taren, You have an awesome channel. I am new to it and really look forward to watching your videos. They are entertaining and enlightening. And you are so right about having a big goal in front of you to train hard for. It is very motivating.
Can't stress this enough, make sure your saddle is big enough, and when you get a fit, make sure your fitter measures this. I rode on a saddle 20 MM to small for 7 years, and potential that it caused a lot of back issues.
Taren - can't see the top of your head in your videos. The view is like we are sneaking into a conversation. Lift the lens. The content is excellent and I'm learning lots. Cheers.
I would reccomend drag shorts for above the speedo. Makes sense to train and be dragged back, right? Also I need to get my bike fitted more properly, I'm always adjusting it and changing the specs
I have a pair of Nike Pegasus or something for running and they are good but i want to get another pair because I've put over 100, maybe 200 miles cuz of walking
I've always been told you can put about 400 miles on your shoes before needing to switch, but you said closer to 200-300.could those extra 100 miles I'm putting on make a difference in injury prevention? Would you recommend maxing your shoes out at 300 miles?
jordynmusi He’s talking specifically about the on clouds since it uses softer compounds and a lot less tread material I personal have used on clouds for 3yrs now and out 500-600 km on safety before affecting my stride just be aware of your form after 400km since they will breakdown fast from this point then make them your walking shoes
Thanks taren though I really not sure about recommending a turbo before lets say a watch/computer? I mean turbos are great but they do have HUGE price differences going from $50 - $1500 and if someone starting out watching this goes out and gets a $50 ebay turbo its not going to help them and could possible damage their bike and I dont think they give as much training advantage as a computer or even a power meter.
So... I signed up for my first triathlon and it's coming up in April. And about a month after I signed up I realized that the average water temperature in the lake for March is 55 degrees and for April it's 65 degrees. I had no plans to buy a wetsuit, but now, depending on the water temperature readings, I may be required to wear one. Pool temp is a nice cozy 82, every day... For a Sprint Tri, if the water temp is at or just below 70, is a wetsuit really necessary? I mean, as long as the water is above 65 I at least have the choice... So for my first tri, should try to go without it if it's optional? I am not a strong swimmer. Thanks! Love the videos, they've helped me a LOT!
If you're not a strong swimmer, then no, I would not try going without a wetsuit. It's colder than you think. Plus you'll need it for future races. Just buy something used for your first one.
I was looking to purchase a pair of ON running shoes to replace my Saucony ride 10's. I was wondering when you purchased those shoes, did you need to pay duty on top of the sale price + shipping? I also live in Canada so that's why I was wondering
Another benefit of a race is that it shows you what you need and what you don't need what needs to be adapted... Your shopping list of gear you have before your first race is in one shot drastically reduced 😅
Hi Taren, I bought my Oraca 2 piece kit- (i am new to triathlon and yet have to participate- exercise now)= only) I weigh 250lbs/ 118kg and my top sit fairly tight.... how tight is right considering i have extra pounds... ;-) Pieter South Africa
Hiya, I couldn't help but to notice your lacing was a bit weird looking. I imagine it's for a reason though? Are there some tips 'n tricks on lacing your running shoes?
I just can't wear those speedos I'm sorry haha! I bought some jammers but no matter how good of shape I can achieve I just cant bring myself wearing those tiny "underwear thongs" in public lol. Great site and I love your podcasts. Keep up the good work!
Hey Taren, great video as always! Is there a difference between a wetsuit you use in a triathlon and a wet suit you’d use for surfing? I’ve got a winter wet suit I use for surfing - can I just use that to save myself buying another one?
Tony Escareno i agree with tony but dont not having a swimming/tri wetsuit stop you from entering a race. I did a couple of races in a surfing wetsuits. Depending on what your goals are. Many starters will even swim without a wet suit so dont be too worried. Just get out there and do a race.

Omg! Thank you.?my wife keeps asking why I have to be the only one without wetsuit racing tri.
I said I don’t need it, she just looks at me like 🧐
Susan Berlien interesting..

I'll probably be doing my first on a MTB 😂

Could you add a recovery and repair kit list. Ive been having a lot of feet / calf problems for the last month or so.
Thanks

Good video, I am going in the right direction with the gear that I have. Taren, could you do a video on how to practice transitions?
Hey Taren, You have an awesome channel. I am new to it and really look forward to watching your videos. They are entertaining and enlightening. And you are so right about having a big goal in front of you to train hard for. It is very motivating.
Thanks and welcome!
Fantastic. Great into to Triathlon tips

your cycling kit is so cool
Excellent.

Question for the group are triathlons harder for guys with bigger frames?

+jordynmusi if your feet feel sore then it’s time for new shoes, forget about tallying miles and use this as a guide

Great video, great advice except the Speedo!
So now the only thing I need is a pool to train in that isn't 50 miles away.....

funny about the speedo. Yours is kind of crazy in color. ok ok... I'm convinced. I will get a trainer
9:00 why is it an trampoline in the background
It's my wife's rebounder!

You know, honestly, I don't remember -- I get so many packages all the time, I'm truly not sure which ones I've paid duty on. Sorry!
All good! Thank you

Video Starts @ 1:17
The other piece of equipment you’ll need is thick wallet or a sugar momma/daddy.
Hi taren! Are you not selling your trainiac gear anymore?
Ha! The new site is up! scody.com/146-tri-taren (And they're giving a 10% discount if you order by Friday, with WEB10)
ah thanks so much!!
It's really about comfort, Pieter! If you're comfortable enough in it, then you're fine!
Hiya,
I couldn't help but to notice your lacing was a bit weird looking. I imagine it's for a reason though?
Are there some tips 'n tricks on lacing your running shoes?
There is actually a Ted talk about tying your shoes so they don't come untied. Changed my life.
I just can't wear those speedos I'm sorry haha! I bought some jammers but no matter how good of shape I can achieve I just cant bring myself wearing those tiny "underwear thongs" in public lol. Great site and I love your podcasts. Keep up the good work!
Hey Taren I found this video very helpful. Just wondering what the best style of bike seat is for beginners?
Can you make a video about Changing between disciplines ;)
I've done many videos about transition, just search my channel.
'Developing sunburn', if only

Its doable ok for your first 1-2 races to get an idea of the sport and find out if you like it before investing.
Is it necessary to buy cycling shoes in the beginning?
Nope, it's not!
Zellers?!? How old is this video? 😆
first name is t last name is riathlon.... hilarious!
The first thing is a bank loan..
