This is the old school Taren we've all been looking for. NO commercial angle... just good real info. Well done Taren - nice to have you back. Very good info for us new racers.
About the wetsuit: if you plan to race in the summer check out if you're even allowed to use one. And you don't need any for sprint distance (which is probably the starting distance for a lot of triathletes). Also I would just wear socks for cycling if you normally do that. Just takes like 15 seconds and you're probably wearing them for the running part anyways
I am just under 4 weeks out from my first triathlon. An Ironman 70.3. I am just getting around to researching what to wear. This video was very helpful. Thank you
It's really wild to watch this video in 2021, knowing full well what was going to happen with triathlon in 2020. Still super useful, but man... it's crazy.
This is EXACTLY what we need. Can you do one to cover what is in our transition for 70.3. Also, how do you get your feet prepared before putting on cycling/running shoes. I’m assuming my cycling shoes are clipped on my bike but that I have to run with the bike before mounting. Do I have to kicked them off the pedals and put them on or do I put them on while cycling? I’m not doing the flying mount and don’t find the elastic hanger method that much quicker, however in this case I have to run for some distance with the bike before mounting so I’m wondering what to do there.
Taren, Hi! Can you advise or do video on Beginners - what to wear WHEN A WET SUIT IS NOT ALLOWED. Which is the rule as I understand it for 2020, 70.3 Hawaii IRONMAN; Which is my 1st real Tri. I have completed a Sprint Tri once.
Thank you for all your tips. Could you please vlog about the experience of doing a sprint tri on Xterra races if you have tried it. I did my first tri before Covid 19 and I would like to try Xterra as I moved to Canada but I’m scared to swim on the dark lake and have not wven tried it. Will appreciate your feedback.
Xterra has sales and specials all the time, I recommend signing up for their email mailing list, they will send you notifications when they are having a sale. For example they are having a New Years Sale right now, all their suits are 60-80% off. You can get a Vortex Fullsuit for $120! This is the suit I have and I've raced in it for 3 seasons with no issues. Good suits, great company and perfect for entry level triathletes.
Wetsuit depends on where you are going to race and what time of year. I've done 6 triathlons in the summer, and only one of them has been wetsuit legal. I like sticking to summer races, so a wetsuit would be a waste of money for me.
If you are looking to shop at the Ironman Store online DON'T!! It will take months for the order to arrive. And when it does it will be incomplete! Brutal customer service (GlobalShopex). Shop local!! The deals shown on the website are too good to be true...cause they are. Avoid the disappointment and frustration.
This video came like 18 hrs too late, as I just did my first triathlon in like 2.5 years. Olympic then and Olympic today. I had all these questions though because I wanted to go fast if possible. Luckily a friend lent me a sleeveless super tight top and had all the right answers as well like no socks bike and perhaps socks for the run. I swam biked and ran in it and it was a good choice. Last time I did a triathlon I put a cycling top on but now as an aero fanatic I couldn't deal with the sails called pockets in the back. And triathlon shorts are great. Also I wore those throughout with no problem. The combination must have worked as I'm pretty sure I set the course record on the bike split today, per strava at least. I wasn't even going as hard as I could, just fairly hard. Unfortunately I can't swim worth anything probably 2x slower than the winner. So it'll be long time if I ever actually get a result in this sport.
Hey Taren - Love the channel. Did my first sprint and looking to doing an Olympic. Not a great swimmer and with added distance of next race looking at two Roka wetsuits - Maverick X and Pro II (on sale). Should I go with the more buoyant X wetsuit until I get my technique and confidence in open water swim? Thanks - J
Never try anything new on race day, been there done that was sitting on the side of the road with a with a tire blown out 😀. Also, you never eat Taco Bell 2 hours before a race 😃😄😅.
Way to get it done in T-town Mr T 👍 🏊 If people are super new to triathlon, I'd say wear what you're comfortable with. Gloves are slow but if you need them on the bike, go for it. Need to change after the swim, ask the race director. Lots of races have options for athletes to duck into a locker or tent for changing clothing. And the people who are looking to go fast probably already know that they need a tri-suit. Great video but quit peeing in your wetsuit. 🙄
Why do you link to Amazon USA? None of your products can be purchased by Canadians without ridiculous duty. I want a ROKA wetsuit and tri kit but they don’t have any Canadian retailers. The duty on the wetsuit alone is $170 USD
I think a lot of us don't wear speedos or underwear under a tri short or tri suit. These shorts do have a small chammy and you want that next to your skin. Good luck this season! 👍
Never wear anything between your tri shorts (or bike shorts if just going on a ride) and your skin. Undergarments will only chafe in this situation. Trust me.
Hey Tayren! It happens that I am watching your video on 55" TV and the ever changing aperture of the camera that you are using is really annoying and I can't watch. I consider myself to be a beginner triathlete and wouldn't say no to some tips about our complex sport. I'll listen to it as background. Nevertheless keep up the good work and GL & HF.
I just put on socks before the bike and leave them on for the run, it only takes like 10-15 seconds and is well worth it
Definitely for long, medium and even Olympic distances. Guess a no go to move for sprints (:
It’s these kind of videos that really help Taren! It’s the small logistics stuff that gets the beginners (like me) worried
Runner turning Triathlete .... New Sub!!!

+1 on tri shorts. I do much of my training in tri shorts. Bonus, you can wear them on race day with a tri top or cycling jersey.

Still super useful, but man... it's crazy.
What happened in 2020?
Biking is most intimidating for me. I was a competitive swimmer and have been running a bunch with my friend but the biking part is tough for me
Same, I’m doing my first triathlon next month and I don’t even have a road bike
Awesome detailed tips! Thank you for including women’s too🙌🏽
I really enjoy your content ☺️ Very informative WITH a little comedy 😄. First triathlon in 6 days 😬
Darn it: where was the video 2 years ago.... lots of trial and error with my gear! Thanks, this is a spot on guide!
TT- you forgot to mention a triathlete's best friend -- body glide!
Thank you making this video. I was debating on buying a wetsuit. Keep up the good work. Your video are very helpful
Embrace the Onesie, I wear it around the house just because, when I'm having a sexy day.
For the wetsuit, make sure that the event allows them before you actually put the money into it if you're just trying the sport out.

Hey there,
Great vid and info. I’m doing my first Aquabike so swim and ride only.
Could I then wear my normal riding gear under my wetsuit, knicks?
is that pool heated? how are you in a down vest and a hat yet people are swimming outside

Why not just wear a tri suit?

Kevin Lavery When your first triathlon is a no-wetsuits race do you wear tri/bike shorts to swim in?
@@Shevock I just wear a tri suit for the whole race.
Thanks!
Definitely depends on location. Most the ones here in New England require a wetsuit even through summer

I have my first sprint tri and a few months and it’s only a 200m swim indoors. Do you recommend just swimming in the bike top and tri shorts

Which trisuit do you recommend for olympic distance? I did a sprint with a trishort n cycling jersey

Yum Taco Bell 2 hours before racing. You must have crushed that race. Hope it was one of those fancy Dorito Taco Bell specials. 😂
@@mlegrand yeah no... not even close 😀. But i did finish 😎.
Nice roka vest where can I get...not on the site...tnx
For the record, I have never peed in my wetsuit 😎😊😀. Now granted I only race sprints, so I'm not really wearing it for all that long 😀.
lexington476 the colder the water the more likely 💦
@@sjdj3000 if the water is that cold, I usually switch to the duathlon 🙂.

I would never want to not wear socks 🤪
