  • In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

The part of this week's reading that most stuck out to me was that Kalmus would've still made this change even if it wasn't beneficial at all to the environment because it made his life better. Even on a selfish level, he and his family are happier and feel closer to the planet and to each other after limiting their emissions. This isn't just to save the planet but it's a necessary lifestyle that we as a human body should emulate. This idea of systemic change that would benefit the planet and the people is a best case scenario win-win scenario and if we can recognize this problem, that action, with the hands, the heart will find meaning in this more satisfied life.
Another very interesting and prominent point in this reading was the proposal of the carbon tax which we have discussed in this class before. To adopt something like this wide scale within the United States would be a huge step towards limiting emissions on a legislative level. This is only possible as a product of voting in those who are passionate about climate change and changing the political climate in America. America's heavy involvement in the amount of emissions ensures America's responsibility in fixing those problems and preventing them. World-wide travel accessibility multiplied the spread of pandemics and we've seen the effects of easily going from place to place for a couple hundred dollars but the effects on our environment are worth so much more. By raising that price for every carbon mile the price of the ticket will force many people to look for alternative options. That money should go to support the ongoing struggle of fixing our current climate.

The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change, air pollution, water shortage and pollution and loss of biodiversity.
Growing all the crops to feed farmed animals requires massive amounts of water and land. In fact, nearly half of the water and 80% of the agricultural land in the U.S. are used to raise animals for food.

The difference with the central distributed fossil fuel to energy conversion like coal power plants is the emissions can be cleaned far more efficiently because you can use the large, immobile carbon capture systems. This wouldn't work on combustion engines. There is also a significant increase in energy efficiency through elec vehicles. The increased draw on the grid is an opportunity to update to more efficient power plants in general, thus increasing efficiency even further.

My teachers never imposed me how to see the things. Fede Widder It's VERY fucking simple.
The colder it gets, the closer to the equator that oceans freeze; and this has been increasing for the past 40 years.
The AMOUNT of sea-ice is irrelevant, since most of the South Pole is on LAND, while there is a thin-spot in the Earth's crust up north which is melting it near Greenland.
IT's LATITUDE of ice that matters, and that's been getting closer to the equator ever since 1987.
And when ice freezes, it RELEASES HEAT, which is the reason for the slightly warmer global temps... so it's going to be VERY cold when it stops, about 5 degrees C colder-- i.e. an ICE AGE.

My last point concerns the gross inefficiency of feeding grain to animals, then harvesting their meat or products (milk, eggs). This is why more than 70 percent of the grain and cereals grown in the U.S. are fed to farmed animals. It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of meat, and even fish on fish farms must be fed 5 pounds of wild-caught fish to produce one pound of farmed fish flesh. The cattle alone consume a quantity equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people!

Certainly an atmosphere is important in keeping the Earth warm, but considering that our atmosphere is less than 300 parts per million CO2 I don't see how this heat is obviously attributed to CO2. Scientists do agree that CO2 traps heat, but, as I understand it, its an anti-logarithmic scale, such that the increase from 100 ppm to 300 ppm should only increase the temperature 1 degree. Not one degree per year, but one degree total. So my plea is still there, please show me some data.

It should also be added that hundreds of millions of acres of forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain to feed farmed animals. And all around the world, overgrazing by livestock leads to the extinction of indigenous plant and animal species, soil erosion, and eventual desertification that renders once-fertile land barren. And the commercial fishing industry is pushing entire oceanic ecosystems to the brink of collapse.

Our taste for meat is also taking a toll on our supply of fuel and other nonrenewable resources: about 1/3 of the raw materials used in America each year is consumed by the farmed animal industry.
Farmed animals produce about 130 times as much excrement as the entire U.S. population and is up to 80 times more toxic than human waste. Since factory farms don't have sewage treatment systems, this concentrated slop ends up polluting our water, destroying our topsoil, and contaminating our air.

if you have ever studied geology, plate tectonics and global warming you might realize what will happen when antarctica defrosts. currently greenland is on record as rising out of the sea at a rate of 1 inch per year (attributed to the ice melting). antarctica will also rise out of the sea (once enough ice melts) and is connected to every tectonic plate around the world, directly or indirectly. it has the potential to crack the earths crust and makes any other issue pale in comparison.

Look, I realize that methane is a very strong green house gas and that not eating meat thus not feeding the meat market, is helpful to curb global warming. But you can't expect Al Gore to change his own lifestyle so dramatically. I believe that he's doing what he can. I believe that he's done far far more than anyone else in the world, for effectively changing views about global warming and spreading awareness. If that is his purpose, than I accept him for that. Now please leave me alone!

I don't see the need to have two frequented mansions, fly private jets (which don't have to be top of the lin ein order to ensure a minimum of emissions) and travel with an entourage in personal vehicles. But I guess those solar panels clear those emissions up. BTW he installed the solar panels after his unduly gross energy consumption was revealed in 07, after which he continues to consume energy in excess.

You can get this information yourself by going outside and not freezing like you would in space. Im pretty sure all scientists agree CO2 traps heat the debate while it lasted was about weather any extra would increase the heat trapped.
Your right in equal amounts methane dose cores more warming, but this is cancelled out by the shear quantity of CO2 being emitted. So there seams to be more opportunity to reduce carbon emitions but any reduction in methane will be more helpful

That's hardly a scientific fact when so many don't believe it's caused by us. Prof. Ian Clark (Earth Sciences Univ. of Ottowa), Piers Corbyn (climate forecaster), Prof. Patrick Michaels (IPCC Unv of Virginia), Richard Lindzen (leading climatologist at MIT) and many, many others disagree. These are all very well respected people in the science community, not just the mainstream. Why do you dismiss these people?

And finally we get back to something worthwhile. Dawkins may not be a nice man in all of his opinions, but his position is supported by history. As he has said, if religion helps an individual, if it makes a person good or charitable, it's a good thing. For that individual. Religion, however, does not work well as a government system, and its presence and regimes that use "religious" systems have shown their failure time and time again though the destruction of other cultures (colonialism) cont.

I’ll worry about tomorrow if or when it comes because sadly if these global patterns don’t change now then there is no tomorrow, for anyone.
