Better to do it now than suddenly realise that in a few years there will be no more fossil fuels, which would cause an even bigger recession as there wouldn't be nearly enough infrastructure or research into renewable energy.
Why is there so much more attention paid to climate change instead of the cutting down of almost all tropical forests left, or of all the toxic waste and amounts of trash we put in the environment non stop?..I honestly think those things are more important and urgent than a couple cities losing their beaches. Its not to say global warming isn't a real problem, but by addressing deforestation and toxic waste that produces methane we can help solve global warming. All I'm saying is they should have equal importance, and all be addressed instead of throwing all our attention to one thing and almost forgetting the others. And this is why I became vegan. Everyone needs to contribute for the future of our planet instead of relying only on the government and the world leaders.
George Cataloni I don't live in the states, I live in sweden. Also, there is a difference between on how much you contribute. There is a difference between willingly contribute and unwillingly contribute. If more people were to be vegan, then the demand for meat and dairy products would be less and therefore that unwillingly contribute that you are talking about will be less too.
SuperPig Sweden is not exempt from agricultural subsidies. I believe it's the EU that pays it, though, which just adds another layer of bureaucracy between your taxes and the subsidies. How much you contribute is not important. If meat and dairy consumption drops, the subsidies will rise to keep them in business. That is why they get so much now: the government is trying to keep them in business. Your willingness or unwillingness to participate does not change how much you participate when subsidies are involved.

Whatever you would have performed as a president of USA is dwarfed by the effort you are putting in to global environment.. Our true future. I am gratetful for the effort and energy you pursue this.

Absolutely a major contributor. Methane gas is the worst pollutant (it takes 5 years for methane to be released!!) and that's what cows give us besides meat, milk, butter, cheese etc. However: feeding them grass instead of grain produces MUCH less methane! I happen to like my burgers, but think we can do something to minimize the problems and many farmers now do!

Yes Al gore is the perfect example of a flim flam man he has made over 300 million dollars pushing this garbage . His home uses more electricity in one year then the average home uses in 21 years . He is a fraudster
This is good to see the progress. I'd like to know two things; First, with the growth of the renewables sector, how much carbon does it eliminate from our global carbon footprint? And in the context of non-burnable carbon reserves, how much of the burnable reserves will we consume for the fossil fuel systems we still have and, on the reverse, not burn for the replacement of those systems by renewable energy? Second, what is the US generation GWH (Gigawatt-hour) percentage that is renewables and how fast and far are renewables advancing in the US?
it is amazing that there are those that have deliberately remained uninformed Along with those that refuse to grasp the reality of (man made) climate change... Those that least understand are willing to block progress, I am encouraged to see they are NOT succeeding. thank You Al Gore for your efforts to forward such a great cause.
Treufuß Not on this channel there aren't. I think it's more about Al Gore being Republican or something. I guess many were disliking because of the title and prejudice, I was very wary at first, too.
+Treufuß Hold the presses.... Is birth not a natural process? Then one could conclude that population change is a natural thing. Leading one to also conclude that changes to our climate is nothing more then a natural event that has been going on for thousands of years.
Mick7sp I'm not sure what you want to say. It doesn't matter if it's "natural" or not. It is man made, and we can change the outcome. Do you propose we simply accept our destiny and the one of future generations, because it's "natural"? Wouldn't the decision of mankind to stop the climate change "natural" as well then?
Treufuß Let me know when every person on the planet that is complaining about man made climate change have stopped buying I phones and 52 inch big-screens.. Then we can talk about how deeply the hypocrites care about climate change. :)
Prof. Dr. H. Stephen Schneider, IPCC's lead author in Working Group, said in 1989, "That's why we need to announce horror-chasing scenarios, make simplistic, dramatic statements, and set aside little mention of any doubts we may have. To attract attention, we need dramatic statements and no doubt about what is said. Each of us researchers has to decide how far he wants to be honest or rather effective. "
+itoohavedreams The medieval warm period (learn to spell) was most likely a result of increased sunspot activity due to changes in milankovitch cycles. However this cannot explain recent warming which has been happening faster than ever naturally recorded. You quote natural climate oscillations but these happen over a far longer scale (10s of 1000s of years) than what has been seen over the last 200.
+itoohavedreams "Then ask them what they think about the mid-evil warm period. " What about it? Northern Europe and Greenland were much warmer and relatively fertile...the rest of the world, not so much. Much of Asia and North America were experiencing mega droughts. The MWP was more than likely primarily a local phenomenon. "Then ask them what effect the Earth's positioning from the sun has on the temperature." Depends on the milankovitch factors at play, but the factors you're talking about won't be significant for thousands of years and take tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years. Which is kind of amusing when you're trying to attribute them for the cause of the last few decades. The proper way to approach the problem is ask what would be predicted patterns of warming based on different mechanisms and test accordingly. We know that CO2 is the most likely cause because it has a unique fingerprint of warming the troposphere while cooling the stratosphere. It has several other fingerprints within the instrumental record, but this unique fingerprint is also within the record and even if you reject CO2 as the cause you still need to explain the observations.
***** Right....Till you realize there are observations that we have on instrumental record this might seem convincing. We observe more warming at the poles than the equator...probably not the sun doing that. We observe a warming in the troposphere but a cooling in the stratosphere...again probably not the sun. We observe the sun it's self has been dimming over the last few solar cycles to the point that people have been questioning whether or not we'll enter a new maunder minimum. Probably not responsible for most of the warming through those solar cycles. We observe it warming at night at about as much as the day...again probably not the sun. We measure an increase in downwards long wave radiation in the bands that CO2 absorbs....again probably not the sun. There are reasons why the scientists discuss topics like most recent decades with regards to this matter because while solar activity has been dropping, temperatures have continued to rise. Also we're already pretty aware of the brightening of the sun over the last 100-150 years, in fact it explains most of the warming for most of the instrumental record up till a few decades ago which no one disputes. It doesn't however explain the most recent warming because none of the observations that would be expected for that proposed mechanism are visible. Also for your 12 year old article I will post the 12 year old statement from the same institute. www.mpg.de/research/sun-influence-global-climate
+James Tahara I love when people share news articles that "cite" studies but either the study isn't even linked or the links just direct you to another article on the same site. Don't forget your helmet and pick ax next time you go quote mining, caves can be dangerous.
let me just say that I agree 100% on what he said in his talk, Im just saying for a guy who has been pushing green energy for so long to not use anything other than green energy is pretty hypocritical. And I know that one jet flight is so little in comparison to how much the world produces in co2 a day, but still.
+Ken Anderson I think many people would rather he fly to give this talk rather than the other way around. Stop judging others and instead help them. Be more positive! The mental atmosphere of the world has been quite depressed lately so these sorts of empowerments are more than welcome!
+Mitja “WuMing” Mieskolainen Of-course, everyone has to try reducing their impact on climate change, but Al Gore is exempted because he's special for some reason. No! He's a hypocritical arsehole.

Raven Ken. There were two MAJOR scientific errors on the cover and that's before you opened it to play the crap contained therein. Then there was that melting of the ice caps, predicted for 10 years ago or was it more? Add on those poor polar bears, all 7,000 of them to be very soon (then) extinct. Got that right didn't he? There are catastrophically now only 35 thousand left. Good Job eh? Very impressed,eh? Speaks volumes about YOU as well. Gore is a money grabbing liar and a charlatan 1st Class.
Regardless of your views about Gore, or one's position on Climate Change and Global Warming, but this was a great speech delivered with real passion that is rarely evident, or allowed, in these days of PR controlled politics.
I have a question: I have seen some articles saying that there is actually a ~30 year delay in the present temperature of the ocean and the temperature it's supposed to be at corresponding to the current CO2 in the atmosphere (just like putting a pot with water on a hot stove, the water needs some time to warm up). I didn't see it so widely discussed though, so I wonder if it's really true
Emile ...What a liar Al Gore is.! Polar bears ...not extinct but up by a factor of 5. Both Polar ice caps to be gone by 10 years ago. Greenland was completely green 1500 years ago. The clue is in the name.. Vikings raised sheep, cattle and crops on this beautifully fertile land they'd found. Look at it now! Like the glaciers, IT CYCLES on and on without burning oil and will continue to do so. The biggest source of hot air is from Al Gore, bumbling on about something of which he knows nothing. You've been conned. He's made money.
Thanks a lot Al Gore. You inspires many many people to change and choose the truth. Your never-weary struggle now shows results. May God always bless you.
In Germany, if you drive from city to city, or even town to town, you will most likely see windmills. Germany is more serious about climate change than America.
And it needs large government subsidies to exist. German society thus needs to work more and harder and emit more CO2 to sustain wind mills that will maybe decrease emission of CO2.
I would like to note that the 'good news' presented here had virtually nothing to do with government action. This is entirely due to supply and demand changing the price structure married with improving technologies. A great many people, including myself, have been saying for a very long time, that this was going to be the case.
A lot of investment came from governments, there are government incentives. The us and especially Europe, a lot of tech comes out of public universities and publicly funded research. It would have come a lot sooner if there were no fossil fuel subsidies and a carbon tax.
+Patternicity I agree that fossil fuel subsidies are an aberration, both to the left and the right. All the rest would have happened all on it's own without any government involvement whatsoever. Government may have accelerated it by a year, but not much more than that. This is almost entirely the result of the natural progression of technology and pure market forces. Everything else is bluster and hot air.
+Peter Cohen The reason costs have come down is because of R&D -- largely funded by the government -- and sustained government subsidies for environmentally friendly technologies. The government of Ontario, for instance, bought carbon-efficient energy supplies for a decade well above market value so as to generate a reliable demand in the province.
+Mark Williams So why are the poles warming faster than the equator? The place that gets the least direct sunlight warm. Why is the stratosphere cooling rather than warming? The sun should be warming all layers of the atmosphere Why do direct scientific measurements of the sun and sunspot counts indicate the sun is becoming dimmer over the last few solar cycles?
Good job. Well done Mr Gore, putting up with ridicule, just like all those scientists of history who were mocked for their conclusions and honesty. The new question to replace, "Daddy, what did you do in the war?" should be "Daddy, did you deny climate change?"

@@bradleywoods3742 Well, I'm listening to the THOUSANDS of scientists who say that it's not.
@@kamran102 The vast majority of scientists conclusively know that human caused climate change is happening right now. Regardless of that, at some point or another we are going to have to switch fully to renewable energy and restore ecosystems like the amazon because it is unsustainable in the long run to not do so. Better to do it now than suddenly realise that in a few years there will be no more fossil fuels, which would cause an even bigger recession as there wouldn't be nearly enough infrastructure or research into renewable energy.
kamran102 Citation?
Why is there so much more attention paid to climate change instead of the cutting down of almost all tropical forests left, or of all the toxic waste and amounts of trash we put in the environment non stop?..I honestly think those things are more important and urgent than a couple cities losing their beaches. Its not to say global warming isn't a real problem, but by addressing deforestation and toxic waste that produces methane we can help solve global warming. All I'm saying is they should have equal importance, and all be addressed instead of throwing all our attention to one thing and almost forgetting the others. What we do to the environment is connected, we can't expect to fix global warming and not uncontrolled deforestation and expect to have solved our environmental problems. Anyway, just a thing to consider.
He's totally right about the problem, and he's right about the potential to change.

Respect of the environment is number one priority. We all want a home with a garden, a bird house and a little library above we want to be active, to go swimming and skiing or walking. Thank you for giving your time to the noble cause of environment
And this is why I became vegan. Everyone needs to contribute for the future of our planet instead of relying only on the government and the world leaders.
The government subsidizes meat and dairy farms. Your veganism doesn't change the fact that your tax dollars still goes towards those industries.
George Cataloni Meat and dairy industry is the world biggest environmental problem. So of course it does make a difference by not contributing to it.
SuperPig I just explained that you are contributing to it, and your veganism doesn't change that.
I would vote for this guy tomorrow
Why so many dislikes?

Tell me if I'm wrong but I imagine it to be almost like breaking an addiction. I mean it must be an exhilarating feeling to be smarter than everyone else and to be privy to some more-or-less secret knowledge that _they_ don't want you to have. Adding to that how much of your online social space and time this might occupy, I imagine it to be much harder than to "just" change your opinion (which as we all know is already something that basically never happens) so you have my respect for that.
Those last 5 minutes of his presentation, strait fire

I was very surprised by the optimism presented here. I watched a lot of stories from Vice or from Elon Musk and the outlook was abysmal. I wonder if they know these figures, and it still won't be enough or if they are withholding that info to spur more change. I don't think he answered Chris's question at the end (Is it enough, fast enough), which is really the only question to be addressed. I'd like to see a debate or conversation between them if they are on the same side.
Fear sells Teslas.
Thank you Al Gore
What about the agriculture industry?
Absolutely a major contributor. Methane gas is the worst pollutant (it takes 5 years for methane to be released!!) and that's what cows give us besides meat, milk, butter, cheese etc. However: feeding them grass instead of grain produces MUCH less methane! I happen to like my burgers, but think we can do something to minimize the problems and many farmers now do!
Well said. Lots of energy.
hockey stick graph comes to mind lol
Powerful video!! Incredible speaker.
This is absolutely fantastic! Why isn't he the president? :D
Like a lot of things in this world: "cuz Bush"
Really, man. He should have been president. But the elections were so damn rigged, and he was HONESTLY so damn close to winning. People actually thought he'd win until they announced that Bush had won. At Bush's inauguration, people were actually booing. That really shows how much the people wanted him to become president. It really is a shame he didn't become president.
if memory serves me correctly, he did win! but, unfortunately, some guys named "chad" were caught hanging from the ballots. so if it weren't for them jerkies, he'd definitely been president. (wamp, wamp, wamp, waaaaaaaaamp.)
Because he didn't run.
David Schultz Uh, yeah he did.. he was a presidential candidate in 2000.
The best way to convince people to do something is by showing them how it is done, not by telling them what will happen if they don't do it. Thank you Al Gore

15 years for this energy transition to become a reality. Fingers crossed :)
It better hurry up. It's already been 12 years since the movie came out
This is good to see the progress.

This was a good speak, why the dislikes?
I don't usually ask this question.
+Anston [Music] There are just so many people, who don't believe in the (man made) climate change.
Treufuß
Let me know when every person on the planet that is complaining about man made climate change have stopped buying I phones and 52 inch big-screens..
where did all the ice that covered a lot of the planet go but 10,000y ago we are warming up from the last iceage
.
+itoohavedreams
"Then ask them what they think about the mid-evil warm period. "
What about it? Northern Europe and Greenland were much warmer and relatively fertile...the rest of the world, not so much. Much of Asia and North America were experiencing mega droughts. The MWP was more than likely primarily a local phenomenon.
"Then ask them what effect the Earth's positioning from the sun has on the temperature."
Depends on the milankovitch factors at play, but the factors you're talking about won't be significant for thousands of years and take tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years.

+Ken Anderson So?
Right because that makes such a huge difference to the global climate.
let me just say that I agree 100% on what he said in his talk, Im just saying for a guy who has been pushing green energy for so long to not use anything other than green energy is pretty hypocritical.
El vídeo es importante porque nos da a conocer todo lo que va sucediendo con nuestro planeta, el cambio climatico, calentamiento global y que en los últimos años ah aumentado mucho debido a tanta contaminación. Yayyyyyy grifter passion...

Everything is cleaner in Germany.
+Hale Bopp
Well, the far-right populists and demagogues that crept up in the recent state elections are just as filthy as everywhere else.
Germany is hands down the greatest country in the world.
You must have a lot of wind ... lucky you ... our windmills stand still most of the time.
And it needs large government subsidies to exist. German society thus needs to work more and harder and emit more CO2 to sustain wind mills that will maybe decrease emission of CO2.
The WILL to react yourself, is a renewable ressource... Beautifully said, Al!
+Peter Cohen Every little bit counts. Every human matters. Everything is important.
He did in fact mention the vast subsidy given to the non renewal. Which, by the way, howls about subsidies to the renewable companies.
Never been so inspired by a ted talk!

Why is the stratosphere cooling rather than warming? The sun should be warming all layers of the atmosphere
Why do direct scientific measurements of the sun and sunspot counts indicate the sun is becoming dimmer over the last few solar cycles?
Mark Williams Do you seriously not believe that the Earth is warming up at an unnatural rate?!
