@Slavery is Freedom, War is Peace Yes and no. It works mostly on untrained fighters. But try that kind of stuff with trained knife fighters and they'll retract their arms back as soon as they swiped it and follow up with something you can't defend against. Even an advanced arnis practitioner shouldn't risk his or her life disarming against a real knife attack if they can run away from the situation, regardless of whether the attacker is trained or not.
@Slavery is Freedom, War is Peace For sure, not being there is the best defense in the first place, but that disarm looks fine- for drilling/training purposes. Remember that this was for demonstration of the art and not for stress testing or proving realism. However, even in a full speed scrim, that disarm would have been okay. Were you worried about the wrist/hand that swiped the knife away? Knives will typically have only one edge, you can safely strike that and the faces of the blade, or use leverage on their wrist to force the knife out, without your skin even coming into contact with an edge. The important thing Kali drills do is teach people to react to an attack using an entry that takes away the opposing threat quickly. Hence why they train a lot of parrying and arm control. If you think its BS, then other arts will have to be BS on it as well, if they so much as teach hooks, arm braces, L-guards, etc- its all the same thing. You intercept the arm of the attacker and take control of it- if you have no way to run ofc, as a last resort. Also, Kali is a war art, that is, its use was in actual combat- taking away an opponent's weapon is not something unheard of. In a stress situation you 99.9% will get cut somehow, somewhere. The important part is that you get cut where you can afford to get cut. A slice on your hand will not kill you immediately. Stop assuming that once the knife touches you, you're dead- the fact of the matter is that it depends where and how you get hit; context matters. Better to lose a hand than to lose your life- and in this case, the guy was far from losing even so much as a finger. If a REAL attacker would intend to kill, there would virtually be no fight to begin with- as any smart killer would lie in wait, and attack quietly from behind, and likely in cover of darkness. This drill would be perfectly applicable in the unlikely case that an attacker would be stupid enough to brandish a knife before attacking and only attack with one motion. That's not very real though. However, in a more real life situation where the attacker would most likely "sewing machine", these kinds of drills will still have an application: that is- you have to keep trying to stop the attack and not just roll over and die. Stopping power using intercepting force (like a jab to the eyes, or a groin kick) and eventually gaining arm control will determine whether you go home with 10 stitches or 1000 stitches. The drill won't happen picture-perfect exact, you just need to have the muscle memory to execute and not freeze on the spot.
@Slavery is Freedom, War is Peace Again, I am in agreement in most of what was said. I hope you see that. This is why I mentioned that Kali is a war art. It's not for everyday people to use. This is why Kali was taught traditionally, personally, in backyards, under the tutelage of a teacher: not as a run-of-the-mill, weekend hobby martial art. People who really trained or train in Kali would understand the risks and dangers of working with and around blades, as it is the center of the art: and they would typically be working around an already built foundation, with or without weapons, depending on where they are applying it, whether military, private security, or sport. You are arguing primarily from the point of giving students false hope or sense of security. You are correct- but that is still not the full picture. The only use of Kali for a normal, everyday person perhaps 99.9% of the time is only personal development and enjoyment- and if they had any a decent teacher would totally understand what you are saying- blades are dangerous, they will get cut, so they should prioritize learning situational awareness, de-escalation, and escape. 100%. But they will still train the art, do flow drills, train sensitivity against stimulus, etc...WHY? Because they love the art. Why would they train in something that 99.9% might not happen to them? Because they love the art. And perhaps because it opens up those movement patterns in the brain and develops sensitivity. Now why would, say, a Police officer, or military operator train in Kali? Because they love the art- and in the off-chance that their life is in danger, that it might save them. The demo is not to be taken as an exact representation of what will happen if Kali is done. As for how many times people need to train to gain muscle memory, you might be misunderstanding, due to your background of Jujutsu and Karate. Are you familiar with Bunkai? The object of the Katas are not to teach you a technique that you must execute perfectly during a situation according to muscle memory- they are there to show you a possibility of a pattern of movement you might do given a stimulus. It does not need to be exact or precise as you see it demonstrated. As long as the gross motor skill is trained, a hand or arm in the way of the stabbing arm has the potential to stop the stabbing arm. Regardless of what system you think you use, be it Kali or not. Does not matter what percentage of those shots you block, as long as you block enough of them, and stop the arm early enough so you don't die.

As an arnisador my respect for this dude is huge.. one aspect that made me think he was a legit martial artist is the mindset of "if you can get away from a shitty situation without getting hurt do it" instead of the bullshido "fight until you die"
@@monskinologytv2573 yeah, and even if the spanish colonize us and ban our arts and forbid our ancestors to practice it, still our ancestor managed to modify it into a shapeless weapon and even without the swords, there's still sticks, knives and farming blades as weapons enough to slay a person. Our art is not just deadly and effecient but flexible, it never competes against other arts instead other arts are just another tool you can collect to make the art more effective and well rounded. Even Kendo and Kenjutsu is perfect to combine with Arnis.
I'm not a practicing Arnis nor Kendo. But, from what I can see from this video. Kendo strikes precisely at the weak points but guarding is hard against those quick strikes from a short stick. Their long and decisive strikes keeps the enemy at bay and at a good distance. While on the other hand the Arnis, focuses on feints and quick strikes to weak points specially on the head and the arms to disarm the enemy. And it gets easier to defeat the enemy at a close distance. Both have pros and cons.
If kendo users can just make them stay at range they'd inevitably win from the engagements. But of course if the arnis users can parry the blade just once and then its over for the kendo users. Been practicing arnis for 2 years and once they close in it's game over for you.
Im not sure about kendo but. i think the main pilosophy of arnis is to kill or disable your opponent as fast as possible without flashy moves thats why most of its attacks focuses on heads and arms just like how most FMA's are.
you are right with the Arnis having Feint and disarming, it's not shown but Arnis(Kali, Eskirma) actually focus on counter attacks and because of the rules with no gauging 2 primary attacks from Arnis didn't get to show 10th and 11th(aims for the eye) strike and for same reason the other 3 stab strike also didn't show 5th, 6th and 7th but I'm salty that my favorite move didn't show the 12th strike
And this was with the thrust banned, the ability to threaten the point at the opponent makes it much easier for the kendoka to maintain the distance they need
Kali is the art arnis is the weapon the reason it went kali arnis was because of the spanish wherein using swords were prohibited thus sticks was a replacement for training
Wow. As a martial arts fan for many years, your sparring is one of the most interesting Ive ever watched. And it's not even a movie or the UFC. Thank you.
There was a romanticized story of how Miyamoto Musashi developed Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu. When he was still a wandering 'samurai' (for a lack of a better term), back when was still challenging anyone to a duel, he encountered a total nobody who duel him to a draw. There was alot of stories who duel Musashi to a draw, the only person to do so. There is version where it was a filipino merchant who practiced 'Arnis' and surprised Musashi when he used double weapons. Some believed that it was that duel the prompted Musashi to develop Niten Ichi-ryu, or two sword style. No real evidence of the story exist, but its a nice little tale to say to any practitioner of both arts 👌
Make a video out of it, just a short story would do. If you're lucky a japanese historian would comment, then you'll have leads. Pretty interesting story to be forgotten I tell you that.
That story is plausible since the Philippines and Japan were major trade partners back then, Japan even once tried to buy Philippines from Spain. Which was refused by Spain back then, the money they offered was bigger than what America offered.
Kendo fighter was male. while he fights, his girlfriend narrates.(she's also practice Kendo and it's a concept of this channel) you can see, after fight, male fighter drinks water to quenching his thirst.
Filipino marines use this technique to fight rebel Isis groups that carry swords and knives for beheadings. There's been many cases where it's been useful unlike modern day "knife defence" martial arts that have saved soldiers and policemen in my country. Arnis/Kali has some flaws yes but with enough strength you will be able to disarm the Oppressor with the knife
My background is in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) but I winced when Yeom picked two shinai lol Fighting with two full-length swords is dangerous because your own swords can block _each other_ and prevent you from reaching the angles you need. It's even worse with chopping weapons like katana and shinai, because you lose the two-handed leverage that makes kendo's slashes so quick. It's slightly easier with thrusting weapons like the rapier, but it's a specialization, not a straight upgrade. These weaknesses are _the reason_ Arnis specializes in _short_ swords. They're less likely to get tangled up on each other, and the shorter length allows you to throw strong cuts with only a flick of the wrist, as the Arnis instructor here perfectly demonstrated c: Dual katana is just Arnis, But Worse haha Still, it's clear that both fighters are experienced with their preferred weapons, and the duals were exciting! :D They perfectly demonstrated each style's strengths and weaknesses.
Woah, I didn't know that there was smth like HEMA I figured it went by a different name and not "Martial Arts" is there any videos or smth that you could point towards a beginner like me to get started on knowing HEMA? I've been on a martial arts learning binge recently ever since I started practicing Arnis / Kali.
@@quitegauche For practical videos like this, I hear good things about Blood and Iron. I haven't personally vetted them (and the name brings up some possible alarm bells I'd wanna investigate a little more), but they definitely focus on little details of grip and footwork. I've seen some good stuff from Academy of Historical Fencing. My preferred slice of HEMAtube is scholagladiatoria and Skallagrim. They largely discuss theory more than demonstrating application, but it helps to give context to the sparring channels. Skall is particularly beginner-friendly :D Big big fan of Arnis/kali btw :3 I came to it after practicing fencing, and horsing around with sai, shinai, and jian. Getting into a flow with sinawali is so satisfying I randomly do the arm motions when I'm bored at work hahaha I haven't been lucky enough to enjoy a full sparring session with it though. I'm still looking forward to integrating it into my rapier + dagger game.

Long stick or sword of Kendo has technical advantage over short stick or sword (itak/gulok) used by Arnis/Kali. However, as observed there were more strikes by Arnis short stick in close fighting. In real combat between katana (Japanese sword) and itak (Filipino sword) it will only take one strike to kill. So i believe the survivor in the battle will be decided by speed and accuracy. Just like all martial arts, a style must develop, innovate and adopt what is good or better and should not stagnate and be enamored perpetually by a classic martial art style. The Filipino martial art masters will have to experiment in lengthening the arnis stick to be more competetive in distance fighting. Be like water!
@@casbb You need to research about Sayonachi, its a real combat form of FMA. Ask around Filipino communities about this style and let's see if you will survive or not.
Modern day Kali has really been adapted to the modern day world where knives/short batons are the most common weapons you will find on the street/carry with you. In the older schools in the Philippines, you still might be able to find some long swords as well as shields hanging on the wall, but hardly anyone trains with those nowadays.
@@nenabunena What about a kampilan then? It's about the same length as a katana (arguably with the reach of a tachi depending on the size of the hilt). Ginuntings are also fairly long. Longer than wakizashi but slight shorter than katana and tachi.

The problem with the kendo guy is that he stops after hitting once, it's kendo rules, but you don't stop slashing in real life until the enemy is down.
but remember that kendo stick is supposed to be a sword. in that aspect it's a one hit kill move. just like the kali sticks if its 2 bolo knife most hit is a kill.
@@blipblop9094 One slice from a sword wont necessarily kill a man. Humans are able to withstand a lot of pain during a battle, which adrenaline would naturally keep a man going. In European battles there have been historical accounts of men loosing limbs before even realising that they were dying, but continued to fight literally to the death.
@@blipblop9094 i agree with mid body wound to be lethal but samurai swords on cutting through flesh being easy isn't that much different than other blades, unless you refer to the top few inches that differentiate it from other blades, i don't know about how effective it is when tapping top of one's head though, i do know arnis sticks were to train to use as dagger and blade or dual short blades as well, so if there's a chance, actually more likely when adrenaline is high even with abdomen being slight open by cut, that this arnis guy isn't going down immediately and still want to chop you cold, it's likely your tactic on hit and call-off/run will end up both parties being sacked in body bags at the end, who's winning isn't a goddamn worth then. It's for this reason traditional duels manuals in japan usually only picture or hint that they most target the wrists and hold back to defending footwork most of the time.
@@baqikenny Actually, some traditional arts of sword (kenjutsu) prefers strike to the head more than anything else. Of course, the way Kendo does that today is just a tap for scoring, but those old schools would go on full-power on the head. The reason is simple, like someone above said, people can withstand minor, or even deeper cut when adrenaline is running, but nobody can withstand concussion from the head strike. Kinda ironic considering katana has some mythical reputation for its sharpness, but its 3kg chunk of metal nonetheless.
Kali is more than just art or sport.. more than self defense, the ultimate goal is to kill because of our dark history...every move counts and should cut, slash or hit.. proud Filipino here
Yeah, that's true, even before the spanish arrive, civil war between tribes often happens that make the art design for killing and combat intended for a real war.

Something I noticed in the sparring in multiple of the videos is that people can take the shinai as a sword or a stick. For example I think Arnis fighter here seems to have treated the shinai as a bokken and continued attacking in even after being struck as it wouldn't have necessarily "killed him". Like wise I think the Kumdo fighter could have also treated his shinai as a bokken and continue to press his attack or created distance with the knowledge that one good hit will not end the fight for him. It's something I noticed from other sparring as well where people get hit but continue in for an attack and the Kumdo fighter is left open because he treats the fight over after one good hit. This is just a suggestion and I hope it's not taken as a harsh criticism. I love what you guys are doing and please keep up the good work!
Because it is a bokken. If u train with a wooden sword, you will be good at a wooden sword. But if you train with a real sword(Katana), you will be good with a real sword.

Arnis is still popular in Philippines. It's mandatory in P.E. subject in schools as mentioned in the comment. It's even taught in the military if you check those Balikatan videos. I don't get where you get the notion that its not known.
I appreciate that the first two lessons are "run away" and "give the attacker your wallet". Seriously, in a knife fight the winner ends up in the hospital and the loser ends up in the morgue. It's not worth it.
Not to stick but from what i call musashi saw the spanish(?) soldier use the rapier and dagger in a duel and then adopt it from that, also musashi lost a duel to a guy with long stick
I think a review of the historical facts would be in order. Musashi is the one who used a wooden sword during a battle against a real sword. I believe he also killed the gentleman with a wooden sword. It's been a while since I read the book.
he fought agains someone who used a jo staff which was longer than a single sword. and he decided fighting wih double swords was good for multiple opponents
I am a former Eskrima/Arnis practitioner myself and what I've observed is Kendo is good at keeping your opponents at a distance but suffers in guarding attacks and focuses on very linear strikes whereas in Arnis, even at a shorter stick can attack on multiple angles, use feints, and attacks are not linear. But overall both can be quick and precise especially if both are replaced with actual blades. Kendo with a katana and Arnis with machetes/bolo knives. Anyways great video. Pugay!
I remember both kali and kendo has disarm and grapple-throw techniques, it might be hard to tell which one is better, since two has different limitations and advantages. But the knife counter is pretty hard to do, as there is counter-counter tech… and it’s true that you better run or yield when shit happens.

Hence, the art is also called Kali). When the Spanish colonizers banned the use of swords in colonial Philippines, the art continued but with the use of sticks because the population was still allowed to carry and use canes (tungkod). However, the Mindanaoans, especially Sulu maintained sovereignty so they were able to continue to always wield kalis/ kris.
Finally! A skilled and respectable Arnis user, not blindly swinging like a maniac and disregarding thier defense.
Yeah, arnis as far as I've observed when training is more on parrying and countering rather than full on attack.
@@loristnorton3723 kali arnis was used in the Philippines as a martial art to kill and protect yourself with and arnis as an art is used more with the sticks but as someone in the war it was used with knives and different kinds of blades
@@loristnorton3723 they probably think of a dual wielding berserker who overwhelms opponents using simultaneous attacks lol
Even today it's practised in our military.
@@loristnorton3723 what. do you mean?.. other than parrying and countering?.. it's an art. used to kill your enemy. instantly.. but because the arnis practioner is fighting an opponent with a long sword, he resolves on parrying more and countering as his defense.. long sword is quite difficult for arnis, because it's for long distance..

As an arnisador my respect for this dude is huge.. one aspect that made me think he was a legit martial artist is the mindset of "if you can get away from a shitty situation without getting hurt do it" instead of the bullshido "fight until you die"
As passionionate as the comment section is, I'm glad you represented these martial arts as a game. It definitely made the video more entertaining
Kali is a Deadly art for my country

It's time to stop
Long live the Filipino weapon during the Spanish period, that's what defeated them, kali yaw, that's arnis panuntukan at sikaran
And this was with the thrust banned, the ability to threaten the point at the opponent makes it much easier for the kendoka to maintain the distance they need
if pro arnis is good in douging those kendo stick the kendo will die easily
ARNIS is an Ancient and Traditional Pilipino Self Defense that being put into pratice as Secret Fighting Skill...Proud and humbled Pilipino here...

It was a he.
I liked the lessons of running away and giving your wallet. Those lessons need to be taught first before any other knife disarm lesson,
Filipino marines use this technique to fight rebel Isis groups that carry swords and knives for beheadings. There's been many cases where it's been useful unlike modern day "knife defence" martial arts that have saved soldiers and policemen in my country. Arnis/Kali has some flaws yes but with enough strength you will be able to disarm the Oppressor with the knife
Train a body builder either Krav maga, Arnis, and jiu jutsu with raw power comes great responsibility.
They're less likely to get tangled up on each other, and the shorter length allows you to throw strong cuts with only a flick of the wrist, as the Arnis instructor here perfectly demonstrated c: Dual katana is just Arnis, But Worse haha
Still, it's clear that both fighters are experienced with their preferred weapons, and the duals were exciting! :D They perfectly demonstrated each style's strengths and weaknesses.
What is HEMA doing here?
@@noobal7653 just admiring the shared arts, thanks to the YT algorithm xD

Skall is particularly beginner-friendly :D
Big big fan of Arnis/kali btw :3 I came to it after practicing fencing, and horsing around with sai, shinai, and jian. Getting into a flow with sinawali is so satisfying I randomly do the arm motions when I'm bored at work hahaha I haven't been lucky enough to enjoy a full sparring session with it though. I'm still looking forward to integrating it into my rapier + dagger game.
i really like this guy, he’s not doing bullshido stuff when it comes to self defence.

Be like water!
it is never meant for distance fighting. if you have enough distance and under no real threat the first principle of fma is to run away.

The sticks are for training, which represent short swords, not long swords. A kris isnt that long and thats longer than an itak.

but remember that kendo stick is supposed to be a sword. in that aspect it's a one hit kill move. just like the kali sticks if its 2 bolo knife most hit is a kill.
@@WarfightersWorkshop well its samurai swords that can slash through flesh easily and those are head and body slashes. Not arms or legs.

@@hawaiiangunner I believe that is the duel with Sasaki Kojiro, he carved the wooden sword from the ship's oar as he traveled to the duel
@@hawaiiangunner i think that was a different fight. Also the Red Oak 'training' swords were less likely to break than a real one.
he fought agains someone who used a jo staff which was longer than a single sword. and he decided fighting wih double swords was good for multiple opponents

Taekwondo has a big influence back in PH. Now I guess it's Arnis's (including eskrima and kali) time to influence SK!

ASEAN meeting is the only way to end your martial law.
Pugay!

very good demonstration... congratulations...I can see from the background posters that you learned it from ONDO Caburnay (RIP)...
Mrs. Hogu is very athletic. Awesome vid.

콘텐츠가 보면 볼수록 풍성해지는군요 ㅎㅎ
You can't kill the enemy instantly with just one hit. He would still be dangerous as hell due to adrenaline rush.
If it was a sword blow to the crown you can be damn sure he'd go down instantly. No adrenaline rush in the world can shrug off a split skull.

I remember both kali and kendo has disarm and grapple-throw techniques, it might be hard to tell which one is better, since two has different limitations and advantages.
But the knife counter is pretty hard to do, as there is counter-counter tech…
and it’s true that you better run or yield when shit happens.

im surprised how strong those helmets are to take so much force of each strikes 😅😅😅
When I used to practice Arnis we'd use the same kendo gear for sparring. Its not fun getting hit in the head lol
Arnis or Kali is a mandatory part of the physical education in most college schools here in the Philippines.
Escrima specifically was implemented to beat Japanese soldiers using mass produced katana during the occupation. Beautiful and brutal art.
You mean machete?
