Optimizing Thermal Storage in HVAC: The Belimo Sensor Advantage

Michael Ridler, General Manager of Team Eden, recently collaborated with Rick and DJ on integrating a new Belimo sensor into Eden Energy Equipments live fire lab where we are using the BELIMO Measurement Canada certified energy meter. This addition is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the precision and functionality of our system design testing. Belimo's comprehensive range of duct sensors, which measure temperature, humidity, enthalpy, dew point, CO₂, VOCs, pressure, and low temperature limit detection, are all backed by UL certification, ensuring reliability and industry-standard performance.
This strategic upgrade was motivated by our current project involving a Sunamp Phase Change Material battery connected to our Enertech air-to-water system. Our objective is to rigorously test the thermal storage capabilities within our system design framework. With the integration of Belimo sensors, we are now equipped to accurately track and monitor various critical parameters, including compressor rpm, water temperature, and flow into the battery. These sensors also enable us to observe the energy and flow discharged from the battery, significantly enhancing our ability to model the battery's performance accurately.
Our system design experiments extend to discharging energy from the PCM battery through an IBC Air Handler. The installation of new Belimo temperature and pressure sensors marks a significant milestone, allowing us to commence benchmarking the usable heat and CFM output from both the PCM battery and our air-to-water system. This initiative is pivotal as we refine system performance, shifting our focus towards maximizing exergy - the usable energy - rather than merely tracking energy consumption.
