Mary lives in a world where people's hearts live on the outside of their bodies and act like pets, which they love and bond with. These "hearts" reflect their owners, but they can also be easily lost in the fray of life.
When Mary suffers a romantic disappointment, her heart begins to languish, and both become despondent and lose their zest for life. In the lowest of her doldrums, Mary loses her heart, making life flat and dull.
But Mary begins to find her way back by reconnecting to life, and is soon reunited with the most valuable part of herself -- which too has been on its own journey, and in search of its own happy ending.
Director Rob O'Neill's charming, timeless animated short -- written by Michelle Cuevas and produced by Josh Ludmir -- takes advantage of the genre's ability to develop flights of fancy into deeply affecting and lovely storytelling, beguiling with unique detail while offering a lesson in emotional intelligence.
There is no dialogue in the short, but the solid writing nevertheless stands out, with a full character arc for Mary and a wealth of quirky detail that makes the world both recognizably ordinary and yet adorably fanciful. The idea of hearts living outside of the body as a kind of companion both offers a strong metaphor for emotions as well as a springboard for beautifully developed whimsy.
Everyone's "heart" is unique to them, with personalities both reflective and yet different from their owners, and the film has a lot of fun showing the diversity of people and hearts in this world. The cornerstone of the story, though, focuses on the central heroine and her heartbreak, pulling in viewers with each finely tuned epiphany and revelation.
The big draw, of course, is the striking animation, full of bright dynamic color and long, lively elongated lines and movement that tantalize and engage the eye. The details are charming and expressive, rewarding multiple viewings. When combined with well-paced storytelling and a terrific musical score -- courtesy of composer Thomas Faragher and featuring a track by singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams -- it's simply a pleasure to watch, both entertaining and resonant.
The ending of FOLLOW YOUR HEART is almost inevitably happy, but it's a hard-won happiness borne of struggle, experience and time. Though it's full of vibrant color, funny moments and exists on a generally upbeat, cheerful register, there's still considerable emotional wisdom at its core -- and a charming reminder that our hearts perhaps know best what will offer true happiness, if we learn how to listen to what they have to communicate.

It's such a cool little detail how the guy doesnt tie his heart with a leash like everyone else, he just lets it free, lets it do as it pleases

Many cases were to be avoid from the beginning by using mind judgement first, but still some are inevitable. Without help of close friends, family and elders, it could even end up with crime or fatality.
Changing the environment is a medicine too, like going to country side for some time or another town and meet new people. there is much higher change to collect him/herself.
I love that he took care of her heart when she 'lost' it. And how her heart wanted him so went after him. Adorable

It's really beautiful how they portrayed the heart as a separate embodiment from the physical body. Turning it into a kind of pet/companion made it really obvious how fragile it is as well as how much of a responsibility it is. it has to be taken care of and not neglected. I think this film really showed that.
Talk about the right timing for a video like this since just of yesterday I realized I’ve lost myself this past 11 years trying to please others and telling them what they want to hear that I’ve lost myself to the point I have no clue who I am anymore but it’s now time I take my voice and life back by speaking my truth which I’m sure I’ll lose a lot of people but I gotta do what’s right for me now and I gotta retrieve the lost pieces of myself back. .. time to rock the damn boat !

How does she only find herself after getting into yet another relationship? Finding yourself has nothing to do with somebody else. It's getting to know yourself, learning that you are already a complete human being and finding and going after your true passions. Other than that great short film.

I thought so also, it was a lovely little film but first we must love ourselves.

I thought that since she began to play the guitar and be happy by herself that was the part with self love. And since she found herself trough self love and got over the break up her heart was ready to find the one that completes it. Thus she losing it to the right person 🤔

notice how the majority of hearts are not one whole color. it's prob to represent the times those individuals have fallen in love and replaced a piece of their heart with another person thus the color change.

Hah! As a scientist, I thought the red and blue represented, respectively, arteries and veins surrounding the heart. Now, your arteries and veins aren't really colored like this but in anatomy books, they're often drawn this way to distinguish oxygenated (red) and de-oxygenated blood (blue).

Loved the metaphors and creative idea, the truth about how our hearts are on a leash, constant companions in our pursuit for happiness, but we are so caught up in our past pain, we fail to see what our hearts want; and when we do know, we don't always cater to it, because our minds are full of contradictions about what truly makes us happy.... until the moment we truly follow our heart

Her heart was missing for many months (Spring to Winter). This means there'll be times when you're completely lost.. but don't give up. You'll eventually find yourself if you JUST FOLLOW YOUR HEART , like she did. ❤️
I love that it shows in the beginning that her heart was bigger than his and then by allowing herself to better herself and let things come to her, life brought her someone who was just as equal to her. Im crying

I saw this amazing film at the right time. I'm still thinking about the past, and hurting.
This 7 minutes film made me smile, and happy. It gave me hope, to take care of myself, to love myself enough and detach from the past. Awesome!❤

Things I noticed: Her heart's name is Skip, as in "my heart skipped a beat," at 1:03 the street sign says "Hart St." as in Heart Street or Heart Strings. 2:20 The tree they're walking towards in the foreground looks like a human heart. 2:55 Her coffee cup says Vena Cava Java, like one of our main veins. 4:39 The street sign says Chambers St., as in the chambers of our heart. 4:58 Skip's progress as he ages wasn't measured in size, it was measured in the strength and frequency of his beats. And Skip is as old as his owner is, or 22 years old.

The graphics in this short film were stunning! Loved the animation!
The fact that this has visualization about a heart being broken or injured or interested in someone else really put an image on a stronger representation of what heart pains are.

At the very beginning I didn't realize it was supposed to represent her heart-I just thought it was her dog that liked to sleep in her guitar case...haha! I loved this unique take on love lost and new beginnings. Plus that song that played during the middle of the movie was fantastic!
