  • Part one of a series of videos looks at the drill press, types and operations. More specifically, this video looks at drill press sizes, types and rpm calculations as well as comparing them to small milling machines (mill drill type). As for all THATLAZYMACHINIST videos, this video is produced for novice , garage or beginner machinists. You can find all my videos as well as project drawings and course notes on my website THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM . Thanks for understanding that I am a professional toolmaker and teacher but I am not a professional video producer (and it shows). I produce these videos for fun as a little retirement project that lets me give back a little of what was passed on to me by so many amazing trades people most of whom, sadly, are no longer with us. Marc, for a long time I have been a "young lad" with a limited garage workshop, working an office job for 3 years for a steel construction firm watching your videos and learning all I can. I now work as a fitter and engineer in our workshop, maintaining all the large equipment and building parts for new machinery, with access to the milling machines, lathes etc, and where the speed and accuracy is much more important than in my home shop work. Your videos are foundational to the way I work in my new shop, and I cannot thank you enough for everything you do for us guys, who you don't even know, but it is appreciated more than you know. I continue to rewatch your videos as I work on projects that use the techniques shown, and learn more each time. Many thanks, from an online apprenctice of sorts.
    Mike

Near the beginning (around 2:20) you mentioned some of us who had made complaints about the sound quality in early videos. (I was one of those who complained). I believe that i can speak or write for many if not all complaints in that regard: "THANK YOU FOR THE FIX". I really enjoy learning from you. Thank you so much.

    Hi Marc,
I do news video production professionally and no director will ever cut a priceless part out because the video quality was poor. Your content is priceless and those who notice the aspect ratio and noise are not paying attention to what you're saying to begin with. I almost never comment on videos but just wanted to say keep on doing what you're doing and we'll keep watching. Thanks for all that you share.

Great video Marc! I'm a 50 yo novice that is currently trying to restore an old Clausing 8525 vertices mill. I really appreciate the time that you take to explain why a piece of equipment should be used over another. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next installment. Very Respectfully, John

Marc, thank you for your great videos. It's a pleasureto listen to a person that does not use extra words likeum, so, ya know, right? basically, etc. Once in a while great.Every other word not so great. I watch a lot ofother machine videos and can't seem to get enoughof them, but difficult to listen to. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Marc,
Thank you for sharing with us another great video! I just love the simplicity of your words which explains everything, the operation of a machine, a drawing or the steps we need to take to finish a part. Now if, in all of these we add your great sense of humor, we have the perfect recipe of a video production. So, I don't think that a high end microphone or a video camera can make the difference. You are making the difference into this community by creating videos that are as JRoque250 said "machining reference" for all of us!
    Thank you my friend
    Jimmy
P.S. You always have a unique way of saying something, you amaze me every time!

+jster1963 Sadly jster I can talk about machining for hours on end. I often finished my class with the next teacher nocking on the door because I overshot my time. I am guessing that there will be a few more videos in this lesson 8, it all depends on what comes out when I open my mouth (words that is, not solids and liquids!). Thanks for the comment, and thanks for the great videos. It shows when someone is having fun and you seem to be having a ball!

I have a large, older delta drill press that has two holes in the cast body of the head the column runs through and then an internal split ring that clamps it to the column. Would a machine like that be suitable for using with a compound table for very light occasional machine work? Are the bearings used in the quills different from mills to drill presses?

+pkav8tor Hi Greg! I use an old version of Vegas movie studio (Sony) for editing my videos. This software permits you to crop and then pan the image digitally. I can pan a cropped image (smaller than the original) in any direction just as long as I stay within the borders of the original frame. As for charming Marc, what can I say! He's a real cutie but all this media attention has gone to his head. I may have to let him go! For the foreseeable future I will continue to produce videos for beginners. Back when I was a teacher, even if I taught all levels I always preferred working with the beginners. If someone gets a good start, the rest comes a lot easier. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write, Marc
