    I dont think "over-simplification" killed Heroes of the Storm, it was their lack of care with the title, then its over monetization later on and then killing its esports scene leaving it in maintenance mode.

    • @stephenb5869
      @stephenb5869 Год назад +1

      I agree that's a bad comparison, but I think it was the opposite of over-monetization which killed it. I used to buy cool skins before 2.0 but after loot boxes were introduced, active players had no reason to spend. It was way too easy to get cosmetics for free.
      But yeah, making the game less complex than other mobas and more accessible was one of the few things they got right. It was fun.

    • @alexk9771
      @alexk9771 Год назад

      Horrible and incorrect take on Heroes of the Storm, @Stoopzz. Love ya, but you're dead wrong on this. Allow me to educate you and your other subs, I hope you'll correct yourself because HotS actually had easily the best formula for MOBAs out there at the time and was steadily refining itself into something truly special, arguably the only Blizzard property that was still being built with actual love and care by it's devs, before Blizzard's infamously horrible upper management ruined it.
      Let it be known that "Do you guys not have phones?" (the announcement of Diablo Immortal), and the resulting catastrophic overnight 30% drop in Blizzard's stock price, was the one and only reason why Heroes of the Storm "died" (though it still has an extremely devoted fan base who plays regularly and plays hard). People were hyped at literal fever pitch levels for a Diablo 4 announcement, instead they got Diablo Mobile, and they were beyond pissed, as it essentially confirmed that Blizzard was no longer catering to the gamers that made it what it was, rather it was catering to the shareholders that kept it's CEOs rich.
      At BlizzCon 2018, Heroes of the Storm had a relatively strong showing and Blizzard laid out a roadmap including new heroes, new maps, new features, new improvements to the core game, and new Heroes focused E-Sports campaigns. A couple days later, the aforementioned first in a long line of again, financially catastrophic scandals erupted at Blizzard and they were forced to essentially either liquidate and gut many of their properties, or go completely bankrupt.
      Despite Heroes of the Storm being an increasingly successful and fan-favorite property at the time, layoffs were made across the company and entire offices were emptied overnight. None but the most established and monolithic properties like WoW (obviously) survived.
      Ironically, while Blizzard fans were clearly livid about Diablo Immortal, there was no doubt that the game would make insane amounts of money anyway, as all f2p mobile games loaded with microtransactions with established IP behind them do.
      Unfortunately for HotS and it's players, the bottom line was that Blizzard needed money NOW, and the only long term prospects they could continue to entertain with a 30% drop in stock price, and investors and fans running screaming towards the exits, was guaranteed massive cash cows like Diablo Immortal and WoW.
      It's actually entirely possible that Diablo 4 was not even being seriously considered for development before this debacle as the company had clearly positioned Diablo Mobile as the their marquee event of 2018 even though fans were clearly expecting Diablo 4 (for PC).
      Anyways, again, Bliz had no choice but to liquidate due to their insane mis-read of their core audience, and while Heroes WAS bringing in money, and WAS growing in popularity, and DID have all kinds of plans for years of future development, the bottom line was that they could have more money FASTER by liquidating it.
      So they pulled a complete 180 on HotS and unceremoniously fired something like 400 people who were just days earlier all but guaranteed that their jobs were secure. Straight up left them to rot, mere days if not hours after building them up as "the next big thing".

    I think D4 will be fun at first, but the success or failure of an ARPG is the balance of how good the progression system is (skills/gear), how combat plays and the end-game systems. You can't drop the ball on either of these 3 core systems or the game wont work for a wider audience, you will have some masochists that will play anything though.
    Blizzard is after the mega bucks, not necessarily making the best game so my concern is what choices are they going to make a great game vs what changes they make to make more money. That is really the thing of greatest concern to me. I think if they plan to have ptw elements or "pay for convenience" where you pay to skip or access systems they put massive grinds in your way, this will be things they will introduce later into the game, after the release. They know they can't do an Immortal, not at launch, if they get negative reviews off the bat it will shrink their audience significantly. They want the 11/10 game reviews before they start to put the squeeze on.

What we know so far may be like the bare bones of it but whatever comes in the season may add more to it. Additionally, D4 will look bare bones when you compare it to ARPGs like POE because they have been out much longer period of time so they have a lot more systems that have been added over time.

Let’s be honest, farming over and over specific dungeons is exactly what D2 is, and the core audience of Diablo love D2 more than anything else. I think the MMO elements are there to make better competition to PoE and Lost Ark and other ARPGs. From what we’ve seen so far, I think they’re doing it all right tbh. I have a feeling that the streamers will absolutely blow through the end game content and then move on quickly due to most not wanting to follow through with the grind for gear that is Diablo. I am excited for the game. I work full time, so it will take me much longer to get through the story and then progress through the end game content. I like the aspect of barely seeing people in the open world to keep the desolate land feel to the world (unless at a world boss fight), but then seeing lots of people running around town. The game is definitely more D2 than D3 though. Slower combat, darker themes throughout, harder monsters, dungeon runs, etc. I think the content that is included in seasons will really be the true test of longevity to the game. Even with D3, most of my friends go back when a season starts and grind out the season journey (about 2 weeks) and then they are done until the next season. My wife and I have been doing this since season 1. You get your diablo fix and then move on to other games. There is no need to feel like you have to log in every day or multiple times a week or you will miss out (looking at you Lost Ark, Lol), and I hope that is not implemented in this iteration. Also, WEREBEAR is back baby!! LFG!

    • @immatoll4375
      @immatoll4375 Год назад

      Absolutely. I think the game had just three major problems:
      1. Monetization: Character locked behind a paywall (or ingame paywall which took me almost 7500 games to unlock every character as f2p). I would have bought a battlepass for skins. Instead they made characters a need to pay and tons of skins for free. Just silly esp. because you need characters to play in ranked mode.
      2. Too late: It just came too late as the third game in a row and while it was more casual friendly the monetization killed it. Also you need to play in skirmish (random teams) that often end up totally unbalanced because the team did not fit. While you only had the "choose" mode (normal mode in other mobas) if you had enough characters unlocked for the ranked mode.
      3. eSports: Blizzard just stopped supporting the esports scene and never really tried to push it. Also the game is overrall not complex enough for the esport scene of mobas. Still the esport matches back in time where great and awesome to watch because the matches where short (maybe also too short) and you could follow the game. While in other mobas so much "boring" stuff happens most of the time for 10-20 minutes. HOTS was always a teamfight oriented game. And at least i loved it.

  • @Sephiroso.
    @Sephiroso. Год назад +1

    The trading limitations is the 2nd issue i have with D4. I greatly dislike any game, ARPG or MMORPG that implements trading limitations. Was one of the main issues I had with Lost Ark actually, or more so it was the Pheon system i took issue with.
    But the biggest and main issue i have is their rationale with why you won't be able to freely respec in the game. Morgan Day basically said if you wanted to try a new build for one of the classes, you'll basically have to level a new character which is bullshit. He said it's because they want your choices to be meaningful but that's the exact same bs they fed us with covenants in Shadowlands. It's nonsensical logic and it's literally wasting people's time for no reason.
    If they had a system like Lost Ark where you straight up get a fully leveled character just by spending a bit of gold, i'd still think it was dumb but wouldn't mind it so much. But that's not how it is in D4. All this is gonna do is serve to piss people off when they reach a certain point, find out they don't like the build they either made themselves or chose, then faced with the option of literally having to make another character for "meaningful choice". That's just gonna cause more people to just quit than anything.

    It all looks good so far. I *really* hope they mix the best of both d2 and d3 when it comes to itemization.
    In D2 there's super rare godly high end gear that fundamentally changes how your build plays (enigma, anyone?). It is *legitimately* hard to attain and is immensely rewarding when you finally get it. It gives you something to grind for. However, D2's item progression is pretty bad. For example many classes will start with Spirit because it's good and extremely easy to get seeing as it's a quest item, but then the next step up is BiS (like Heart of the Oak). There's just not enough inbetween.
    D3 has the opposite problem IMO. The progression is good because you find incremental and meaningful improvements in itemization frequently. However, there isn't really a super rare god tier loot drop that will fundamentally change your build. Everyone gets their 6 piece set and then hunts down ancients / primals which literally are just more stats.
    If D4 can give us smoother item progression *while also* having those super rare god tier drops (which is what I'm hoping Uniques will be) then it'll be fantastic.

    I am a huge ARPG fan, I played so many of them starting with Diablo 1 on release.
    And I think the whole "Don't put MMO in my ARPG." crowed is mostly just looking for an excuse to dislike the game.
    Activision (I still refuse to call them Blizzard) has always gone for making niche genres simplified and streamlined to attract the masses. This is the whole reason why WoW, SC2 and Diablo 3 became so popular. The floor is so low everyone can pick it up and enjoy themselves. And it can backfire for people who want more depth. I can just say, if you want simple fun, go for diablo. If you want depth, go for Path of Exile. If you're like me who simply loves ARPG's, play both (and other games)

    These public events are definitely a negative, not a positive.
    The existence of strangers in my game is always a net negative.
    Examples:
    An event triggers, you see a map icon or something like that. You have to drop whatever you might be doing at the moment (even if you prefer completing it first), get on your mount and run (RUN) to the event hoping you'll get there just in time to throw a single hit and tag the boss before it dies. Because 2 seconds after the boss is up there are already 4 extremely high level players on it, deleting it.
    You're fighting a group of mobs, dodging, getting hits in, using different skills and having a great time all around. When all of a sudden a player runs in and bashes everything on the screen in a split second. Multiplayer means there is no room for any build or play style that isn't the "zero tactic, max dmg, zerg rush".

    My biggest issue is with them making it difficult to respec. They have said it will be easier to reroll your character than to grind for enough resources to respec. They use the dreaded term "Meaningful Choice". It might have seemed that way in 1999, but it's nothing more than a pain in the a$$ in modern games. They should ask the WoW devs how it went form them in Shadowlands when they put roadblocks up to waste people's time and called it "Meaningful Choice". Every time I hear devs use that term I get a bad bad feeling. Maybe it's ptsd from Shadowlands. Wasting my time with the artificial roadblocks they call "Meaningful Choice" was the reason I stopped playing WoW. There is a huge difference between wanting to waste all my time in a game because I love it, and having a game waste my time because it was designed to waste my time

      That is a must in ARPGs because leveling is never an issue. Diablo needs to stay close to its roots otherwise it is going to alienate all the arpg fans. You are not supposed to be able to make one character and then use it to make multiple builds on it. Not only does free form respec allows players to abuse the system but it also takes away joy of making characters and discoveries.
      That is what having meaningful choices means in this case, you are not supposed to just put your skill points without thinking because there is safety of easy respec. This also gives players challenge. And if you are not that interested in playing that way then you can always just take some build guide and follow that to make it easy for you.
      It is not design that is there just to waste time for sake of doing it. Being able to brick a character and having to go through learning curve to understand mechanics is what ultimately gives joy when you make a sick build.

    Been playing ARPGs all my life and I've gotta say the complete removal of trading in D3 was the worst thing they did to the game. They could have removed the real money aspect from the auction house and kept player trade in the game.
    Finding rare items that aren't for your build/character is a huge let down, its the feeling of "wow I really wanted rare item X for my class but instead i've got this that i can't do anything with but look at." For example, in PoE if I find something rare and I don't want to use it I can sell it like 99% of the time. I can turn that rare item I cannot/ do not want to use into currency which can be used to get me something I actually want but haven't been able to obtain yet. I don't see why trade restrictions need to exist at all, just don't associate trade with real money and the system would be great.
    D4 is gonna be one of those games that sinks or swims based on the replay value, ARPGs are all about the loot and if I am constantly finding loot that I can't do anything with but trash or put aside in my stash I'm not gonna want to play it again.

      I think you can trade blue and yellow items. The well rolled yellow items are going to be the most valuable items in the game, more valuable then a legendary would be if you could trade legendaries. That's because the best items will be a well rolled yellow that gets a legendary power imprinted on it. Yellow items have more affixes and higher rolls for each affix too

    For me - any game that is enjoyable is worth the money and IF i had to use numbers i think a game that give me atleast 70h of solid gameplay for 70€ in the end is totally ok. I spend up to 15€ / movie in a cinema so 1€ or less per h for a game that costs me 70€ is ok. Looking at Escape from Tarkov - the 120€ for 2400 hours over the last years - absolute bargain!
    For now, i play some D3 casually - fast, short sessions, still fun in first 3-4 days of the season but that's it. I get older and don't have that much time anymore.
    PoE was fun a long time but now it is just a cluttered mess and tedious af. So many old league mechanics that are annoying. Story? Crap. Progressing until endgame - way to long.
    Maps are boring after a short time. Trading - a pain in the ass. The only good thing about PoE is the huge amount of viable builds unless you wanna do 100% content in a league. I NEVER EVER made it to the "real endgame" and killed Maven etc. because i have a job - PoE is time consuming af.

    Basically Blizzard is adding the RPG!! back into ARPG. I can see tons of people enjoying the direction theyve gone and spending many more hours than they initially though they would. Potentially hundreds of hours. It may not appeal to the most hardcore more modern arpg audience that wants to play a spreadsheet. I remember a time where this type of game was inspired by the RPG in the name and it wasnt all about crunching the numbers.
    The beta was a blast, not perfect, but if Blizzard continues to support the game I could see myself leveling multiple characters to max and testing out many playstyles with each. Easily a multi-hundred hour game before the real grind kills the fun.

    I don't see how the getting the game too casual would be bad in a non-competitive game. Another prime example of this is fighting games, though it has often worked out in increasing the player base with some titles like SFV or GGST what ends up happening is the core audience just hates the game, and you end up with a larger audience full of people that didn't play that game at all before. Specially in the case of GGST I don't think even 5% of the GG veterans even bothered with it, it's full of new faces because if you've played any GG title before that thing is an aberration in every sense.
    That could also end up happening with D4 whereas they alienate against the core audience but they end up with a larger, completely new player base imo.

Groups of friends would basically have to start the game around the same time (or pay to accelerate up). You also lose that feeling you got from Diablo I and II where unlocking a single skill felt valuable...limiting trading also limits the social interaction and forces more rng grinding (and or paying to win).

      Blizzard is just butthurt that they don't get a percentage of the money when people sell items during RMT, and they also know they are powerless to stop bots. I'm not sure if they are genuinely afraid of disappointing or upsetting the people who don't want any trading but honestly trading is a big reason why people still play Diablo 2. In my humble opinion, it would be more beneficial for the game to just allow unrestricted trading. The people who don't want to trade don't have to and thusly are not affected, and the people who do want to trade can. In theory, both parties win, even if one party is butthurt and wants to get up in their feelings over nothing. Trade will ensure the game lasts longer than it otherwise would have.

Being limited to few abilities it is important to have options through legendaries so that there can be a varied meta. Also more content like PoE delve or Lost ark Tower, Clan wars (lost ark guild wars), some guardian type events and some really challenging bosses / content would be nice. world bosses are fine if you can make a clan only group so you can actually do it with friends. Now these "raids" can be soloable of course but the more people you have and the harder you make the raid (if you wanted to allow sigils) would drop more/better gear. These raids would of course be limited to a weekly lockout per character. D4 does need to be treated like an MMO to help it survive.

As you kill the enemies you earn a currency that allows you to open chests within the helltide region that each chest contains a specific loot such as chest, boots, etc.. The endgame will be the seasons and I look for them to change gameplay significantly. Seasons will see the reintroduction of sets, rune words ala D2, etc. I have played the game in the closed beta and love it.

    I think people should probably tune their expectations for D4 to essentially a non-p2w Immortal experience. I'll admit that it's definitely a hard thing to visualize because all your damage numbers and other benefits were tied to p2w systems like gems, legendary gems (combat resonance and platinum source), and other things (not sure, I only made it to paragon 40). There was a lot of core gameplay things from Immortal that I really liked though. Open world events and bosses were actually a fun concept, I remember farming Zolten Kulle Library pages in parties to get the Hydra to spawn faster which was good source of gear (I actually don't really remember if it was a good source of gear so don't fact check me on this) and then taking a quick break from that to go to another world event that was starting.
    As far as endgame, I'm honestly keeping my expectations low. Probably too low for a 70-90 dollar game. The reality is that it takes multiple iterations and updates to get the endgame to a great point. I really don't expect the endgame to be anything amazing until after year 1 or first expansion release. However, if there are any hard/soft caps on any of the endgame systems, I'm going to throw a fit. I feel like ARPGs are all about feeling the "rich get richer" type of thing and if there is anything that limits that feeling, it's not going to feel good for the player.
    sorry wall of text that no one might read, felt nice to write about how I'm feeling about D4 though lol.

People were hyped at literal fever pitch levels for a Diablo 4 announcement in 2018 as Blizzard fed into it with teasers. What people got was Diablo Immortal, and they were beyond pissed, as it essentially confirmed what we all suspected, that Blizzard was no longer a company for the gamers that made the company great, rather it was a company for the shareholders that kept it's CEOs rich.
HotS was making SOME money, but it was doing so more slowly and slightly less exorbitantly in comparison, and it could be done faster and easier by simply firing everyone, liquidating it and writing it off. To this day I can't bring myself to even try Diablo Immortal, as a long time hardcore Diablo fan, because I watched it slowly kill my actual favorite game, Heroes of the Storm. FUCK Diablo Immortal, and fuck the people who run Blizzard (into the ground, seemingly). wccftech.com/heroes-of-the-storm-team-downsized/
    It's actually entirely possible that Diablo 4 was not even being seriously considered for development before this debacle as the company had clearly positioned Diablo Mobile as the their marquee event of 2018 even though fans were clearly expecting Diablo 4 (for PC).
    Anyways, again, Bliz had no choice but to liquidate due to their insane mis-read of their core audience, and while Heroes WAS bringing in money, and WAS growing in popularity, and DID have all kinds of plans for years of future development, the bottom line was that they could have more money FASTER by liquidating it, so they pulled a complete 180 on HotS and unceremoniously fired something like 400 people who were just days earlier all but guaranteed that their jobs were secure. Straight up left them to rot, mere days if not hours after building them up as "the next big thing".

    maybe they're gonna follow the lost ark route and do an mmo instead of an arpg but i don't think that d4 will be of any competition to poe in the future the only game i think that can compete with poe is last epoch i believe the last epoch devs are doing rly well rn with the "real release" i hope they keep doing what they're doing and they ll definitely have a big place in the arpg genre i rly feel like last epoch is what d3 should've been certainly a lot more casual than poe while still having a good amount of depth and way more casual friendly than poe
    i hope im wrong about d4 but wont be surprise by the usual blizzard fuck up don't get too hype about d4 it will just ruin the game even more for you

    I'm interested in D4 but at the same time have the 2 major fears. First and biggest is monetization: They want D4 to be a live service but at the same time be pay to play, wich can lead to really aggresive monetization that Blizzard is basically testing in games like OW2 or Diablo Immortal. Big example is how they confirmed skins in the game and have the classic bullshit tier of prize tags. Second fear, the mix of mmo and arpg: I can see totally how this system can be implemented in a very superficial way and make so the crowds for each genere are unhappy. At worst, you can have a game that 2 major ideas or gameplay loops that are clashing with each other making progression feel awkard.

      yeah, diablo immortal showed a very clear direction they are wanting to take the game. They are looking at other free to play arpgs and want to one up them, just looking at all the end game currency and mechacnics and it just screams 'confusing for the sake of montization'. Maybe I'm wrong, but I am not going anywhere near the game until well after launch and we can see exactly where it is going.

    As long as im not forced into groups for optimal pve or boss fights being gated by groups, im ok with those raid bosses bullshit.
    Also don't buy it on release, specially now that there isn't trading, there is no need to be in day 1.
