As you can tell from the dialogue, this episode was made the day after Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows got married. Each had been married once before. Allen and Meadows were married, apparently happily, for over 46 years, until Steve's death. They would work together on a number of projects, including the very good PBS series "Meeting of Minds."
This guessing of Jayne Meadows' identity may be some of the more adorable questioning ever. She and Steve Allen were such treasures and warm people. Love these episodes.
That episode is certainly one of the most emblematic of what can be considered WML Golden Age, it's fair to say that the show had already peaked by 1954 but here you have the 3 usual panelists and Steve Allen (certainly the best) and the ending with these dog sounds is one of my favorite moments from the show, you could tell the chemistry was all in place and they let themselves be goofy a little to show how much fun they have together... it was hilarious in a cute, sweet and very endearing way.
In the 70s Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows would appear all over television always together. Game shows, talk shows, variety shows, specials. To have one on the show meant having the other. It is rare to have a successful Hollywood marriage.
They appeared to actually like and respect each other. Steve wrote a couple of mystery stories in which they were co-sleuths. They were good fun, as mystery stories go, as I recall, and perhaps worth looking up to read if you have not already done so.

There are occasions on various shows when Arlene's voice and manner of speaking is very similar to Jayne Meadows'. I am not saying they were otherwise similar.
Probably taught by heir mother (that is, they had the same teacher) My brother and I had very similar handwriting because we were taught by the same method.)
An interesting coincidence with the first challenger, George Burnside. Ambrose Burnside was a Union general who briefly served directly under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. Gen. Burnside is better known for his distinctive mutton chop facial hair which have since generally become known as sideburns.
Burnside actually was the commander of the Army of the Potomac while Grant was still stationed in the West. Besides being known for his whiskers, Burnside is remembered for two spectacular failures as a general: his inability to get his troops across a bridge in the face of a relatively small number of sharpshooters at Antietam, and the horrendous number of casualties resulting from his repeated assaults on a strongly fortified Confederate army at Fredericksburg.
I know most peeps are talking about Jane Meadows and Grant's Tomb. Did anyone notice Bennet Cerf - he is wearing a white or maybe off white suit. You never see men on TV wear white ever, but it takes 20 years off of him. He should have worn white every episode. The dark suits aged him.
In Seventh Grade the last question on a math test was. “Who is buried in Grant’s Tomb?” All the so-called smart kids got it wrong. Us regular kids got it right-can’t make this stuff up.
Funny no one asked who was buried in Grant's tomb. Interestingly enough, I live next to the monument for William Blackstone. His body has been moved so many times, they lost it, and it's still lost.
Love WML So many great ppl Tried to think who was NOT on it All 4 actresses from Little Women were Don't remember Mary Astor Marilyn Monroe James Dean Shirley Temple Bogie etc Could have run so many more years with celebs they did not have on Sandra Dee Bobby Darin Elvis Presley Better stop now Great show

Today's RUclips Rerun: The Mar 21, 1954 show featured Dorothy's children as contestants, but I believe this is the first show where the producers sprang one of the panelist's spouses as a mystery guest. It may also be the first time that someone on the panel mentioned the name of the mystery guest during an earlier portion of the program (Dorothy at 0:45-0:55).
I really enjoyed Daly & Burnside's collaborative rejection at about 9:15. They were having fun. (And made me vaguely wonder if they might know each other in other walks of life, but probably not.)
Grant’s Tomb is quite a large monument in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Aside from the building, it has landscaped grounds and a staging area for large groups.
By 1954 she had only been in 7 films, 15 total in her lifetime. None in which she had star billing. So I'm wondering what she meant by saying yes to being a "leading lady"? Anyone know?
daniel stanwyck Bette Davis, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep,Lana Turner or if you want to talk theater Ethel Merman, Helen Hayes...those were and are stars. I would say Jayne was more of a simple television personality than a "star" or leading lady
+mazoboom John often answered for the female mystery guests when a question "are you a beautiful movie star" or "are you a leading lady", etc. so they wouldn't have to answer a question that might make them look conceited, or bragging.
Entertainment world? Pictures? Theater? Television? Leading woman? Broadway? Singing? Dancing? Motion picture? Blonde? Same questions to the celebrity.
Yes, they asked the usual questions. One difference this time, though: Steve Allen didn't ask if she was a blonde "at the moment". Somehow, slight variations on that question got laughs on show after show.
Steve Allen was rather frivolous that night.... So, he was wondering who Jayne was leading, hm.... ? Give it a few more months, Steve, you'll find out exactly that !
rambleon fromhere - more importantly it created a little more time for the last guests who nearly always ran out of time. Should have done away with the walk by, and the free guesses for that reason.
She married Steve Allen. "Allen's second wife was actress Jayne Meadows. They had one son, Bill Allen, named for Steve's father. They were married in Waterford, Connecticut, on July 31, 1954, and remained married until his death in 2000." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Allen#Personal_life
accomplice55 - yes it's lovely to see the manners in this great series. Only on very rare occasions do you see the ladies stand for anyone, and therefore it comes across as an very exceptional act of respect and admiration.
You might as well ask why the men are wearing dinner jackets and the women cocktail dresses to play a parlor game. Because that's what rich people did on Sunday nights. It was considered chivalrous for a man of good manners to make an extra effort at politeness when meeting a woman, while a woman, in that 100% heterosexual world, would not need to show the same "put her on a pedestal" chivalry to another woman or a man. The women did stand for celebrities that were considered to be towering in significance or gravitas over mere actors, as they did for Eleanor Roosevelt. You would have a good point if you asked why Bennett, and occasionally other male panelists, ogled, leered and made suggestive remarks at pretty young contestants, and then pretended to be chivalrous by standing during the handshaking.
Not meaning to be nasty but Jayne Meadows was a leading woman in her own mind, and I suppose John was obligated to nod yes to her. I remember when she & Audrey first appeared in movie magazines, they were hard sells from what I saw, and never noticed a family resemblance except in their eagerness to get into the entertainment business with no noticeable talent.
Well, you know, Steve called her either the most talented or one of the most talented actresses he had ever met, and Jayne showered him with compliments throughout their marriage. A more solid mutual admiration society there never was. Steve is often denigrated as having written a thousand songs, only one of them any good. However, that's one more than almost all the human beings in history can claim. In addition, he was innovative and came up with funny ideas with the best of them. He introduced new performers on his show, and did zany physical stunts, just like Carson did later on, only Carson got much more credit. As for Jayne's acting talent, _Meeting of the Minds_ was a wonderful concept, but Jayne usually played the same character, whether it was Catherine the Great or Cleopatra. They might as well have been the same person, Jayne Meadows. Like Kitty and Arlene, Jayne was basically a TV personality. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not equivalent to being a leading woman. Beyond that TV role, Kitty and Arlene branched out into other endeavors, while Jayne mostly stuck to game shows and being part of Steve's act. Audrey was brilliant as Alice, and did a decent job in other roles, but she was the perfect Alice Kramden. I have a feeling Pert Kelton would have been a bit too harsh in the role and it would have been hard to believe she would forgive Ralph over and over again. Unfortunately, Kelton was dropped because she was blacklisted, but due to that, Gleason was able to get it right with Meadows. Oddly enough, Joyce Randolph has outlived Gleason, Carney, Meadows, McRae, Kean, every other actor associated with The Honeymooners, even Ralph Robertson, who played little Tommy Manicotti in the wonderful episode where Ralph confronts bank robbers with Tommy's water pistol. She is still around, in her 90's. I too never noticed a close family resemblance between the Meadows sisters, until I saw them standing next to one another during the closing number of the 1986 Emmys (available on RUclips). My jaw dropped. "They were obviously sisters!" I thought.
Arlene Francis had one of the most beautiful smiles!!!!!!

He should. Her husband was the original host of the tonight show that Fallon hosts as of 2015.

Jayne passed away today at the age of 95. Rest in peace Jayne. We know you're with Steve now having a good laugh.

Shame they no longer make Stopette, now we cannot turn our armpits into charmpits (a reference to something Hal Block once said).

So when Arlene asked if Jayne Meadows was known for something she performed the day before...was she implying she was a bride just the day before??? She and Steve did marry in 1954.
Robert Melson 4 months ago
+rocky marino Yes. She and Steve Allen were married in Waterford Connecticut on Saturday, July 31, 1954.

I prefer when each panel member gets one question at a time.
What's My Line? 1 year ago
+John Fuentes Already replied to your other comment about this on the Pearl Bailey episode, but just to make sure you see it, the rules were changed to one question at a time per panelist during the mystery guest rounds on 4/17/55.

I was a HUGE Steve Allen fan when I was in high school (60s) and I basically knew Jayne as Mrs. Steve Allen. I don't know much about her without him.

After the dog psychologist the panel instead of saying goodnight bark like dogs. They are quite good, except Bennett... :) 25:12

Wow the entire panel stood up for Jayne Meadows.... that's quite a few now I've seen where Arlene and Dorothy stood up for... Eleanor Roosevelt, Ethel Barrymore, Jimmy Durante, Sophie Tucker, Anna Magnani, Frank Lloyd Wright, James Kilgallen...
who else??

For the young people watching this, these old shows are a way of extending your lives back into the past, before you were born. History books and documentaries work also.

I did a Bing Search, and it states that Jayne Meadows is 94 years old. She celebrates her 95th birthday in late-September.

Jayne Meadows was a babe well into her 50s! She was even better-looking than her late sister Audrey.
Michael De Sapio 1 year ago in reply to What's My Line?
Audrey and Jayne did very similar voices in their WML appearances.
What's My Line? 1 year ago in reply to Marcus Larinen
I loved their occasional guest shots on the old series "St. Elsewhere". They played the loopy biological parents of Erlich (Ed Begley, Jr.), who had faked their own deaths and remained absent from their son's life since childhood, because they were. . . spies. Just delightful. They had a beautiful, easy chemistry together, it's a shame they didn't do more character acting as a team.
What's My Line? 1 year ago in reply to zardon4
They were both absolutely stunning, and what amazes me is how alike they look. If they ever tried to dress alike and wear the same hairstyle, I think I'd have trouble telling them apart.
That said, Jayne aged beautifully; Audrey, not so much. And what happened to her voice-- my goodness, Lucille Ball syndrome right there. :)
Marcus Larinen 1 year ago
A long and happy marriage indeed, 46 years, til death did them part.
There are occasions on various shows when Arlene's voice and manner of speaking is very similar to Jayne Meadows'. I am not saying they were otherwise similar.
I live right near lake ronkonkoma 😂😂 it's funny when people that don't live on Long Island try to pronounce it
It seems to me, it sounds like it's spelled and I lived the first 67 years of my life in California, having moved to Montana last June.
ten flips and our panel flopped
apparently dog whisperer wasn't considered a real thing back in the day.
16:23 Jayne has almost the same hand writing that her sister Audrey does in her guest appearance
Probably taught by heir mother (that is, they had the same teacher) My brother and I had very similar handwriting because we were taught by the same method.)
Very eell said agree completely
An interesting coincidence with the first challenger, George Burnside. Ambrose Burnside was a Union general who briefly served directly under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. Gen. Burnside is better known for his distinctive mutton chop facial hair which have since generally become known as sideburns.
I was thinking the same thing!
henjutsu1 as was I. I suspect he may have been a descendant and sought this job due to his affinity with the Union, but that's just hopeful thinking.
Lois Simmons There’s a statue of Gen. Burnside in downtown Providence!
What a team... steve and jane
And yet people wonder why all first world and some third world countries are ahead of the US in math education,
Funny no one asked who was buried in Grant's tomb. Interestingly enough, I live next to the monument for William Blackstone. His body has been moved so many times, they lost it, and it's still lost.
Love WML So many great ppl Tried to think who was NOT on it All 4 actresses from Little Women were Don't remember Mary Astor Marilyn Monroe James Dean Shirley Temple Bogie etc Could have run so many more years with celebs they did not have on Sandra Dee Bobby Darin Elvis Presley Better stop now Great show
With Steve Allen's departure imminent coupled with the closing sequence of this episode, one could make a good argument that WML was "going to the dogs".
Lois Simmons -- not sure what kind of dog sound Bennett was trying to make. Lol 🐶
3 minutes to guess a dog psychologist?
Today's RUclips Rerun:
The Mar 21, 1954 show featured Dorothy's children as contestants, but I believe this is the first show where the producers sprang one of the panelist's spouses as a mystery guest. This appearance must have been a REAL surprise, as Steve and Jayne had only wed the day before!

It may also be the first time that someone on the panel mentioned the name of the mystery guest during an earlier portion of the program (Dorothy at 0:45-0:55).
Daly's faces often would help the panel.
Raises my endorphins every time. :😂
I really enjoyed Daly & Burnside's collaborative rejection at about 9:15. They were having fun. (And made me vaguely wonder if they might know each other in other walks of life, but probably not.)
Manager of a tomb, hard work.
Happens to be one of the most popular visitor and tourist sites in NY. I'm sure he had a substantial staff working for him.
Grant’s Tomb is quite a large monument in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Aside from the building, it has landscaped grounds and a staging area for large groups.
It’s so sad to think they are all dead.
Including the audience and producers directors 😢
What a charming wife
Hilarious!
Steve Allen knew it was here in about five seconds. He was playing along.
I thought he was completely fooled but then not at all surprised after Jayne had been revealed.
I don't why I find 23:22 so fun to listen to haha
By 1954 she had only been in 7 films, 15 total in her lifetime. None in which she had star billing. So I'm wondering what she meant by saying yes to being a "leading lady"? Anyone know?
***** Never heard of a play she had a leading role in either, but I may be wrong
daniel stanwyck Bette Davis, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep,Lana Turner or if you want to talk theater Ethel Merman, Helen Hayes...those were and are stars. I would say Jayne was more of a simple television personality than a "star" or leading lady
She seemed unsure of how to answer it herself, and only said yes after looking to Daly. It seems he thought the answer should be yes.
+mazoboom John often answered for the female mystery guests when a question "are you a beautiful movie star" or "are you a leading lady", etc. so they wouldn't have to answer a question that might make them look conceited, or bragging.
Steven Patrick Stone jú
Woof woof
Sounds like Audrey
maybe mustve been really famous back then
Entertainment world? Pictures? Theater?
SweetHeart Sounds Like Another SweetHeart.!.At Times,!!!: Nannette Fabray ! 😂😂😍😍😍😍☺️
Maybe it’s me, but John Daly didn’t seem his usually good natured self on this episode. 😂
Steve Allen was rather frivolous that night.... So, he was wondering who Jayne was leading, hm.... ? Give it a few more months, Steve, you'll find out exactly that !
I'm glad they got rid of the people walking over to the panel. That was annoying to me.!
rambleon fromhere - more importantly it created a little more time for the last guests who nearly always ran out of time. Should have done away with the walk by, and the free guesses for that reason.
Begin the GENERAL questioning with.... Big clue for the first contestant?
John always referred to it as the general questioning so the panel wouldn't have picked up on the word.
The decline of class from that day correlates with the decline of our culture.
No honeymoon for Steve Allen?🥰
I would have given anything to spend an afternoon with Jayne. But I would have given anything not to spend any time with Steve.
I will always be grateful to Steve for coming up with late night entertainment format of the tonight show. ❤️
I wonder what the 'Yesterday' thing was that Jayne Meadows did?
She married Steve Allen.
"Allen's second wife was actress Jayne Meadows. They had one son, Bill Allen, named for Steve's father. They were married in Waterford, Connecticut, on July 31, 1954, and remained married until his death in 2000."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Allen#Personal_life
I was hoping Steve would flirt a bit with his new wife and then have some "splainin" to do when she was recognized.
Why do the female panelists stay seated?
Because a man always stood up for a woman. Even in
2020 I will stand up for a man or woman while I greet them. I will even open a door for both sexes.
William Kelly - that doesn't answer the question! You are saying why a man stands up!
@@keithnaylor1981 They simply didn't. Men did. That was the convention.
accomplice55 - yes it's lovely to see the manners in this great series.
You would have a good point if you asked why Bennett, and occasionally other male panelists, ogled, leered and made suggestive remarks at pretty young contestants, and then pretended to be chivalrous by standing during the handshaking.
three dogs and a mutt
Not meaning to be nasty but Jayne Meadows was a leading woman in her own mind, and I suppose John was obligated to nod yes to her. I remember when she & Audrey first appeared in movie magazines, they were hard sells from what I saw, and never noticed a family resemblance except in their eagerness to get into the entertainment business with no noticeable talent.
Definitely a supporting player in movies. Maybe on stage she played leads.

Who is buried in Grant’s tomb? Groucho Marx is right. Thanks and good luck from the Desoto Plymouth dealers.
Who is on first base?
I was three days old, when this aired.
Look for the episode where Jack Benny kisses Jayne, with Steve sitting next to her. Hilarious.
cant stand her never ever liked her or her fake laugh or her pretentiousness her sister Audrey on the other hand was pretty and charming
