- I am singing a very old traditional English song: "Green grow the Rushes, Oh!" Se if you can figure out the meanings if all the verse "number"! The one who is all alone must be God, of course, but what about the others? The lily white boys? The Rivals? I know what they mean to me, perhaps each singer interprets them in his or her own way?

John , exactly the way it is meant to be sung . I used to sing this at primary school with a few of my oldest buddies . I have sung this song in Morocco and China . Once in the Sahara and once in deepest darkest China at a wedding . Love it mate . Will keep listening to you . Hope you are well
I Love it !!! x Used to sing this with my Daddy when he played guitar when i was a little girl, very happy memories x Thankyou
Very nice! Been looking for a good rendition of this - used to sing this as a child in the 50's. I hope it doesn't vanish like some other old songs we used to sing,
I sang it the 60s to with my dad on our coach outings with the coop insurance
I'm so glad you liked it! I've known this song since I was a child - and that's a long time ago!
i was introduced to this song doing Renaissance Faires in California. I've always loved it, but never found a recorded version i liked. Yours, sir, I found myself singing along to before i even knew what i was doing!
Thanks a lot. I had forgotten this song from my childhood. It brought back memories and gave me great pleasure
My 51 year old singing group Sing Thing Family Singing loves this song and we sing it every year at the Christmas magic 12 days. There is a RUclips video one of our participants posted. It is one of many counting songs that counts through the 12 days.
You are one happy fellow absolutely enjoy your films thanks
Used to sing this around a campfire at church camp in Saskatchewan, Canada many decades ago.
Thank you! I wanted to teach this song to my daughter, but couldn't remember the whole melody - your version is delightful and your voice is SO mellow. What a pleasure to listen to you -- wish I had a cd of you singing with the ukulele. Let me know if you ever decide to make one.
My Dad used to sing this without the accompaniment and so I'd never thought about having it played along to before I came looking tonight. Absolutely lovely, you remind me of him a lot. (Though he sang 7 for the 7 starts in the heavens, not sky :P) Thank you x
Seven for the seven stars in the sky ;) not heavens
you cant convince me otherwise! :P
First heard this sung on an episode of the British series the Avengers, Diana Rigg and Patric Macnee sang it, loved it then love it now.
I read somewhere that this was the song they sang at the ALAMO . Later the Mexicans called them the GREENGOS. Thank Loved it.
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Man I love your channel, brightened my day!
A beautiful rendition, thank you so much. My husband was reminiscing about his father singing this, so it was lovely to hear every single verse and wonderful accompaniment. BTW - massive apologies if I clicked on the thumbs down icon by mistake - it's a problem associated with drinking wine and googling late at night, but I can assure you that no criticism was intended. Thanks again, what a wonderful thing to share xx
I have read that the lyrics have been changed so much over the centuries that the original meanings are lost. who knows? my girlfriend and i enjoy your take on this bro. thanks
Hello John, this is a great song which I remember singing at school. I have just started trying to learn to play the Ukulele, I hope to be able to play this song in the future. :)
Nice rendition!
Oh by the way , the woman I have fell in love with used to sing this with me . 34 years later . I want this in my wedding ensemble lol
I love the melody!
Thank you! Very interesting! My greetings!
Loved it! Thanks.
Thank you!
I love it
I used to sing this song at school and I really loved it, now I'm learning to play the Ukulele so this video has pleased me greatly. What chords are you playing? Thanks sir
I loved it! Play another one? Please! How old is that song? It was amazing!
You're the best!
I have just been and checked out Wikipaedia, and there are many interesting interpretations on there if you are still interested. I really enjoyed your performance btw.
I was told The Rivals may be a corruption of The Arrivals, meaning the 3 Magi. That is one interpretation anyway!
I have no idea! That's why asked! I think that Rivals are jealous lovers!
I love it! I don't suppose you can tell us the chords?!
what are the lily white boys
