- Stardust Memories is a 1980 film written and directed by Woody Allen, who considers this to be one of his best films in addition to The Purple Rose of Cairo and Match Point.[1] The film is shot in black-and-white, particularly reminiscent of Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963), which it parodies. It was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award for "Best Comedy written directly for screen".
It is the story of a famous filmmaker Sandy Bates (Allen), who is plagued by fans who prefer his "earlier, funnier movies" to his more recent artistic efforts, while he tries to reconcile his conflicting attraction to two very different women: the earnest, intellectual Daisy (Jessica Harper), and the more maternal Isobel (Marie-Christine Barrault). Meanwhile, he is also haunted by memories of his ex-girlfriend, the mercurial Dorrie (Charlotte Rampling).
totally underated movie.... its better taken out of context of being watched when it came out .... he denies its about him but its totally his take on being famous.....its ahead of its time
A gem
Brilliant
It's so hard to tell where Daniel stern is in each film of his career where is he?
I'm starting to remember why I was so depressed and why this depressed me further. Oy.
It is quite depressing. Agree
"My mother was too busy running the boiled chicken through the deflavorizing machine to think about shooting herself." I'm glad I had a mom who was a good cook!
Best scene ever. 7:38
Part 1 is blocked inside the United States.
This film is such a wonderful homage to Fellini. But, I guess my favorite thing about this specific film is the grotesquely close and claustrophobic feeling the audience gets from the director's adoring throngs. Some of the things his audience says are so offputting. So, so clever, weird, and well done.
@perkyporkpie
What would possess you to ask that..?
Jessica Harper is so subtly beautiful.
😮
The deflavorizing machine
The most narcissistic film ever (and I like woody Allen ).
Americans love narcissists. Look at Trump, or shit, anyone in show business.
To some degree but he does not come across as self-important or self-aggrandizing
Well, since you've written that weak argument, my opinion has since changed and I no longer like this movie. Congratulations.
I love Woody, but these scenes are so hostile. They make all his fans-the people who gave him his career-seem so ghoulish. It’’s really offensive. This movie has wonderful sequences and is a lovely homage to Fellini, but why? Charlotte Rampling is great, but at the end of the day, his hostility makes is such a middle finger. I’d rather watch Interiors.
They make all his fans-the people who gave him his career-seem so ghoulish
I'm a Woody fan and that's one thing I love about it He is mocking obsessive fandom, not all fans, think about it, this came out just before John Lennon's murder and a year before John Hinckley shot Reagan over his obsession for Jodie Foster
well, that's not cool.
is it possible Ms Rampling is in fact a man?
Not even close. Go look at Caitlyn Jenner
Brilliant
