Tip for the parsnips, is to water the ground, sow the seed, then lay a plank (or something similar) along the row so it stays damp. Keep lifting it periodically to check and when germinated remove it. Works for me.

Always start my parsnips on damp kitchen roll. You are sure then that they have germinated before you plant out.

I sort by month and type. Each January i sort what I am going to sow for the year into months, remainder is kept in types for next year. I was late last year with parsnips and sowed them late may, am still harvesting now and have had some great results. I grow mint from seed, needs a couple of years to mature for picking otherwise the growth can be stunted, much like rosemary.

Hi Jessie, club root is prevalent on our site as well. What helps is to dig a decent sized hole out, line with lime and fill with bought compost. Then plant out the brassica into this. They have a good amount of "clubroot free" space to grow before they hit the riddled bit. And with that they seem able to grown and withstand it. It works for me and the plot neighbours at least! Good luck and happy planting.

I grew 'Hollow Crown' parsnips last year and they turned out really well for me; no parsnip canker on them (which is like a sort of orangey brown rot on the shoulder of the parsnip). I always got this when I grew 'Tender and True' parsnips. Like you, I never sow parsnips until March - and mid to late March up here in the north west of England - it is too cold and wet or still snowy in February here in most years. I sowed a melon variety from seed in 2018 when we had that very hot spring after the beast from the east winter - I sowed 'Uzbek Sweetness' in about mid February in 3 inch pots of compost at home in a heated propagator and took them up to the allotment greenhouse (unheated) in early April and planted the melons in the greenhouse border on mounds of rich soil with very rotted manure in it - thinking of course they would fail, because it was just too early and the frost might kill them on cold night in spring - I just covered the small melon plants with fleece to settle in for a week and then took the fleece off and a couple of days later that heatwave spring started and by early August I was picking melons of different varieties - I only got one Uzbek Sweetness from that plant, but it was enormous and the biggest melon I have ever grown - a rugby ball oval shape and about half the size of an actual rugby ball! Lovely very sweet white flesh and a green skin. Sometimes a gamble can pay off!

I grow parsnips and you are right some years you get loads then next year you are lucky to get a dozen. What I do I leave say three parsnips let them go to seed and I get loads of seedlings. As you say parsnips can't be transplanted. I know a chap in Suffolk he has six allotments and he wins prizes at shows. He transplants parsnips. He makes a slit with a spade puts the small parsnip in with as much soil as possible. Firm it in. Then keep it watered until it looks happy.

Really interesting seeing what you're planting this Feb Jessie. I'm taking notes! Good luck dealing with the club root, dread getting it on my plot. Mint from seed is okay but it's notable that the seeds need light to germinate (unless that's just spearmint?) and they can take a while to get going.

Rest of the month for me is some lettuce, fennel (my boyfriend is nagging me for fennel... one of the only vegetables he'll eat so he wants them and wants them now). Some cavalo nero, some broccoli, cauliflower, musterd greens and lupins... I really need to slow myself or i would sow everything already.

I grow parsnip Hollow crown every year (and I agree the name does sound like it should have a rotted hole going through) and I sow them outdoors in February with no protection and I had some really good crop in the past few years, although as you said, germination is poor.
Some of my French marigolds (variety Naughty Marietta) have self seeded, which was awesome and my sunflowers self seed every year. I have no idea what variety they are, they came with the plot :)

I am going to try the cabbage, cauliflower and sugar snap in the greenhouse to see if they'll be ready by mid may to harvest, when the normal stuff goes in. The onions can be put out when they are large enough in spring because they take forever. I will sow some marigolds for the greenhouse too because I think they take forever too.

Some of the cooler things like Brassicas could probably do okay in the conservatory - chilis and aubergines need high temperatures though. The other big issue is light - if your conservatory is south facing you might be okay, but most people sowing things before March are also going to be using grow lights - otherwise you'll end up with tall, sad, leggy, weak seedlings!
