  • Cayo Ratones
Located less than 500 meters off the shore of Joyuda in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico is a tiny island named Cayo Ratones.
The island was originally called Cayo Pinas or pinero island, for Pineapple island. It was abandoned and quite literally trashed, which resulted in being overrun by mice, earning its new name of Mice Island, Cayo Ratones. The island is now under the protection of DRNA the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.
This small cay has no facilities or services. Remember to take your trash with you.
Restuarante Cayo Azul and El Coral are 2 of my favorite spots for happy hour and a great view. There are plenty of bars and restaurants along route 102, including my favorite restaurant for dinner, Costa Brava.
The restaurant lights attract the sabalo fish we see swimming below. More commonly known as Atlantic Tarpon, these large silvery fish are more beautiful than tasty, so you probably will not see them on the menu.

Good to see you posting on YT again Jen. You probably don't know who the hell I am, but we had drinks ( hi to Isis!) one afternoon at, as I recall, La Valentina a little over a year ago -- Margs and snacks.
You had some "chin up" suggestions for me wrt/finding a rental on the island. Very helpful. 2022 very definitely NOT helpful as things turned out. Now looking to find my way back to PR/Mayaguez, get this process back into full swing. Hope all is well with you!

Car rental prices are extra high during Spring Break (this entire month) and "high season" (also right now). There are much better travel deals in off season, and June is particularly nice.

I never heard her say anything about prices. Perhaps YOU hear that this is some island in South America and think cheap vacation! I, a BORICUA born and raised in nearby Mayagüez will tell you: Puerto Rico is AMERICAN territory, for better or worse, with another language. That should inform you a lot of what you need to hear.

I just moved here in January. Well to boqueron very close. So beautiful..... my kids came over from the states for the first time. We took them to a restaurant yesterday next to there called the gato negro....... the waitress was so rude we left before we were able to sit down... drove down a couple businesses to el bohio. I think that's where the tarpon were in your video. Walked in sat down waiter was salty af. He said things like yea we like everything deepfried?? and when I ordered a medalla he sad yea support the locals wtf? Idk why it was the first time we had a blatant gringos go home experience and my kids got to experience it good for you locals.... food was extremely over cooked my son couldn't finish the lobster it was like lether. I've spent over 100k here in 3 mo. CASH. What if the gringos did go home???? Like no more free welfare checks go home?? Be careful what you ask for..... very sad..... but yea its very beautiful here jen. Just don't interact with the locals. They definitely bite the hand that feeds them.

I am sorry that you had a bad time. There are so many great restaurants, I highly recommend Costa Brava (that is where I filmed the tarpon and photo of my mojito de coco). Other great options that I mention in the video are Restaurante Cayo Azul and El Coral for great views and service.
I hear your frustration. There are so many warm, kind, friendly people here that you just haven't met, yet.

So sad to read such of bad experiences, the people of Puerto Rico sadly don’t travel to often to outside of the island and some of them think than the Island is the only place in the world, they don’t understand we are all United State Citizens and everyone have the right to being trying with honor, respect and courteously, they need to learn a lot about nobody going to take there home away from them we are part of a Nation and that is the best thing ever happened to P.R. many others countries in latino America will be so grateful to have what people of P.R. have as United Stated citizen, I apologize for there behavior, but it’s not all the puertorriqueños acting like that, I love my friends from the Main land and for me you guys are always welcome to your Island Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
