  • Explore Cabo Rojo with us!
We’re taking you to the National Wildlife Refuge of Cabo Rojo.
Our first stop is at Puerto Rico’s pink lakes - Las Salinas (Salt flats) de Puerto Rico. From there, we’ll explore El Faro Los Morrillos (The Los Morrillos Lighthouse), a historic landmark in the area of Rojo Cabo.
Not too far from there, we’ll visit the Puente de Piedra and we’ll relax at Playa Sucia or La Playuela, one of the most beautiful beaches on the west side (or oeste) of Puerto Rico.
This corner of the island quickly became one of our favorite day-trips while we lived in Boqueron. If you're in Puerto Rico, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Oh Dios!!

I went there four years ago while taking an Ecology course. We walked for three hours and didn't even notice. We were lucky enough to see a couple flamingos, it was very cool.
My sister and I have planned to see all of the lighthouses. We already went to the lighthouse ruins in Guanica, now we're going to hopefully travel along the west coast to see all of them.
Thank you for keeping our places clean. We've been trying to get people to be more conscious (we have university student associations, mostly science, that have made educational signs about keeping Puerto Rico clean), but some people are stubborn. We share your frustration with non tidy and irresponsible people.
I have no idea why it's called Playa Sucia, but the sargazo has been a growing problem all over the coasts. The scientific community is still trying to figure out what's going on.
We call hermit crabs "cobitos". Speaking of Salinas, have you heard of the reserve Bahia de Jobos that is in the municipality called Salinas? If you're lucky, you can see manatíes feeding on the coast :)

    • @SpanishandGo

You guys are awesome , the story take us to March 18 of 1973 went a Greek tanker Zoe Colocotronis spilled 37,000 of venezuelan crude barrels of oil in to the costal waters of southern PR , about 24,000 barrels of oil washed ashore at Cabo Rojo contaminating the beaches and the rocky shore, that is where the name of playa sucia is coming from, 48 years later this is a great and clean destination to enjoy beautiful waters and great wildlife. The beach is actually Playuella,
Playa Sucia is the shoreline at the pink lakes. The ocean current there brings all of the sea trash there and dumps it. Plastic bottles, bags, tires, lots of trash end up on the shoreline at Playa Sucia beside the pink lakes.

Jim, May. Awesome work. Outstanding. As a Caborrojeño (native of Cabo Rojo) I welcome you both to our beloved town. Enjoy your stay in La Guarida del Pirata Cofresí(Pirate Cofresí's Cove), however short or long it may be... A couple of things: The official & real name of the beach is Playuela. The thing is(to the best of my knowledge) that since the Bay is called Bahia Sucia everyone has erroneously called it Playa Sucia... Cabo Rojo gets his name from, again, to the best of my knowledge, those Redstone Cliffs by the Faro(Lighthouse) Los Morrillos. "Red sun" & "red sky"🌞Sunsets, Las Salinas/Pink Flats(you can argue red-ish) also helps the argument for the town to get its name, Cabo Rojo (Red Cape or Cape Red). And, thank you endlessly for thinking of helping 🇵🇷's economy in your decision to move & in helping clean up Cabo Rojo. I admire you both for that. I wish there were more Caborrojeños & Puerto Ricans that were as respectful of our Island's natural resources & were as humble as you too, to be conscious not to trash our beautiful land. P.S. Just came back from my annual 2-week vacation at my parents' home in Cabo Rojo. Maybe next time I visit, I can get to meet you both. I would be a pleasure. Till next time. Stay safe!

The rangers at the site feed many cats that will very likely found very near the trash cans at the end of the dirt road, just next to the entrance to Playa Sucia. Oh and by the way, agree with the excessive seaweed accumulation on that beach, however, the complete reason is because it is the most southwest point in the island, where many currents converge. This leads to many flowing things, not just seaweed to find its way into the small bay. In fact, the long stretch of beach on the east of Playa Sucia is called Bahia Sucia (Dirty Bay), for the same reason. Other names include Playuela, which is what most locals are calling it nowadays.
Also, I’ve missed you several times on the local hiking Group (FB closed channel hikes) several times. Hopefully we will meet soon. Thank you for treating Puerto Rico with such respect. Nos vemos pronto!!

Ohh that’s my favorite place in Cabo Rojo! Beautiful! Answering your questions, Indeed, the beach it’s called “playa sucia” , because of the “Salgazo”. A few years ago the name of the beach was changed to “Playuela” . The salgazo is temporarily, the beach is absolutely amazing when there is no salgazo. Another thing, you can visit the faro, go inside, they have pictures and the history of the place and you can climb to the top of it which is really beautiful, the view and the wind is so amazing and ITS FREE, you don’t have to pay for it.
Finally thanks for the cleaning and picking up the trash. I did the same every time I visit the beaches. As responsible PuertoRican I fell ashamed, that some people don’t take care about our precious resources 😢. Hope we can make a difference! Thanks for pointing it out!

After Boquerón, we went there for the sundown, and it was amazingly beautiful, the sun coming down, the sound of the waves hitting the cliffs, the nice breeze, and the light of the lighthouse going around (yes it does work), got great pics.

So glad you enjoyed Cabo Rojo. The Drone shots definitely made those flats look extra pink and beautiful. Excellent!
I think our beaches are pretty clean for the most part. The wind blows a lot away. And the strays get into many things. I see locals (us as well) always travel witulh bags picking up garbage. Even before it became a challenge. Also we are accustomed to bringing food and water for the strays :( it has become a habit sadly.

Thanks, Vida! We loved our time in Cabo Rojo and miss it already. We’ll be back though.
Yes, it is quite windy up there, so I can see how trash could get blown around. We always have extra dog food in our trunk too to help strays as we see them. Good for you for making PR a better place! Un saludo. -Jim

Of course...it is also hit bad during the holidays. But still grateful that people like you and others clean up. Again, I am really excited for those drone shots. People can really see how impressive the flats are. Gracias.

Great video! I've taken a few of my friends precisely to those places when they come to visit from the US. Although PR has an incredible amount of places to see and things to do, I always take my visitors to Cabo Rojo, Old San Juan, and El Yunque. If time permits, we'll go other places (Arecibo Observatory, Culebra, Bioluminescent Bay, etc.).

    Hi Jim and May!
I love your videos, they have definitely given me inspiration for my trip to PR. I am visiting Puerto Rico in 2 weeks and was hoping to rent a car and visit Cabo Rojo however I know that there was an earthquake in PR yesterday. I hope you are both okay from the earthquake and wanted to know whether you'd still recommend visiting (I've never driven in another country before and don't know how the roads will be) ?
    Thanks!

El nombre Cabo Rojo viene del color de las murallas (cliffs) y por los colores de la sal.
