Alistair Begg provides a powerful observation of the 4 Gospels; Matthew Mark Luke and John - they are consistent in their “Why and How” of Christ’s arrival in History. For over 3 millennia, Hebrews and Israel were devoted to accurately recording their culture against the backdrop of time. Thusly, all 4 gospels prove that Jesus was not a random accident nor some innovative thinker/philosopher who “came from nowhere”. Jesus was here before there was a “here”; before time itself‼️😃 Jesus’ arrival and coming redemption was proclaimed through the Old Testament prophets of His coming. In other words, The big picture of God‘s master plan of redemptive love, his Son Jesus, has been in place from the beginning of mankind. In Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus says that there are 3 set of fourteen generations, but only list thirteen in the last set. Luke’s genealogy is almost all different, do they contradict? Plus there was a curse giving by God concerning if Jechonias’s kids being able to rule on the throne. And the last thing is, if both genealogies are Joseph’s then how can an adopted son have rights to the throne?
The genealogical list in Matthe, from David to Jacob-Heli (spanning about 1000 years), contains 27 generations at 40 years each, so as to comply with the royal generational standard. Luke, on the other hand, gives 40 generations of a more comprehensible 25 years each. Hence, Luke places Jesus in the 20th generation from Zerubbabel, whereas Matthew places him in the 11th generation. SUMMARY: Matthew--27 generations of 40 years... from Solomon. Hi, can anybody help me and elaborate on the 4rth point brought at 34:53 ? "The family line of Jesus contained some who were moral outcasts". I'm not a native english speaker, so as far as I understand - the 4rth point speaks of immoral people in jesus's family tree, brought by mathew. As the preacher mentioned earlier, people there are infected with sins, some worse than others... But who in the family tree is considered to be a "moral outcast"? By the way, how this point differs from the 1st one, 32:46: "God's dealings are with actual people, not ideal people".
Including Ahaziah who through his evil Mom was the grandson of Ahab & Jezebel- 2 of the most wicked people of all time. Talk about all inclusive. They omitted Ahaziah's son Joash to keep the 14 generation sequence going...
Here’s some elaboration on the moral outcast statement. Tamar tricked her widower father in law Judah into having sex with her by disguising herself as a temple prostitute. Her first husband was killed by God because of wickedness. By custom, her deceased husband’s brother took her in with the idea of given her a male child to protect and provided for her in her old age. God killed the second brother because of rebelliousness. Judah sent her away, abandoning her. So to have a child within that family line, she tricked Judah into sex. Judah evidently raised sons so terrible that God killed two of them. He himself visited who he thought was a temple prostitute of pagan gods. Ruth the Moabite, while a honest, wonderful woman, was a descendant of the incestuous Lot who had sexual relations with his daughters producing Moab. The Jews saw the Moabites as a pagan culture. She was not the Jewish virgin that would have been the cultural standard for Boaz, yet he loved her and married her. The wife of Uriah is Bathsheba. She committed adultery with David who arranged the death of her husband, one of David’s most trusted generals. Bathsheba stayed with the man who arranged the murder of her husband and continued sexual relations with him.

If Matthew 1 is the genealogy of Mary’s husband Joseph, then there’s only 13 generations from Babylon to Messiah and if Joseph isn’t the biological father of Yeshua then why does Joseph’s genealogy matter? Fortunately, According to the Hebrew manuscripts of Matthew 1, the genealogy is that of Mary’s FATHER, Joseph, which gives us 14 generations from Babylon to Messiah as stated in Matthew 1:17. So, the genealogy in Matthew 1 is that of Mary through her Father, which makes more sense. However, Jeconiah is listed in Matthew 1 and is this the Jeconiah who was cursed? Additionally, Luke 3 is the genealogy of Mary’s HUSBAND, Joseph, which still begs the question of why is his genealogy listed at all if he’s not the biological father of Yeshua? So, Matthew 1 is Mary’s genealogy, but may have the cursed Jeconiah and Luke 3 is the genealogy of Mary’s husband, Joseph, who allegedly is not the biological father of Yeshua.
The genealogy is Joseph’s in Matt. 1 (cf. Matt. 1:16). The significance is that Joseph is in the line of Judah, from whom the Messiah King was predicted (cf. Gen. 49:8-12). That tells you that Herod should not have been king, but Joseph. Now you know why the Shekhinah glory cloud was absent from the temple. First century Israel was not legitimate. But in that illegitimacy there is hope, because the women were illegitimate (Ruth was a Moabitess. Rehab was a harlot who came from Jericho. And Bathsheba, whose name wasn’t even mentioned was illegitimate because she was another’s). But illegitimate or not, God still overcame and produced the Messiah. And we’d be illegitimate to if it weren’t for Christ.
Those are clearly two different genealogies of two different families, which have almost nothing in common after David, or more precisely, the one in Luke is a paternal genealogy that focuses on St. Joseph as the biological father of Jesus Christ, and doesn't mention St. Mary at all, while the one in Matthew is a maternal genealogy that focuses on St. Mary, since it only mentions St. Joseph as the husband of St. Mary, for legal reasons, and the genealogy ends with St. Mary as the mother of Jesus Christ.
I wouldn't have saved me. I wouldn't even only destroy me, but I would find a very long and unpleasant way to kill me, and that's what I would deserve. It's been 2-years now and I'm so flabbergasted the Lord's Grace and oh such mercy! For me??????!!!! How can it be that HE, my king, would die for me? Oh what Mercy. Oh what depth of love for such a wretched and worthless, violent, hell deserving soul as mine. There's not a thing in any imagination that can come close to His Majesty.

First off, I genuinely admire Alister Beggs' ability to articulate and convey his breadth of understanding of Scripture and our Lord , Jesus Christ. Yet, here, his discernment regarding Matthew's genealogy of Christ is off. Matthew's genealogy literally reads"was born of," where Luke's just as consistently uses "of" as in the seed of, meaning a generation or more might be skipped. New Testament Scripture says in Romans 1:3, for instance, that Jesus was the seed of David- Yet, He certainly wasn't "born of" David. But why is Scripture even able to use Joseph's genealogy? Because Christ words that "So, they are no longer two but one flesh," Mtw 19:6, are absolutely true. Reflect on this: where was Jesus when Joseph married Mary and the two became one flesh? In Mary's womb.
@Yinx Rhythms etc because she had sexual relations with David while she was married. She did not cry out as you would for rape. She willingly went in with David and stayed with him.
Matthew as a numbers guy..tax collector was despised by both Jews and Romans. His is the King line of genealogy...Lion of Judah, for the sake of record tho Joseph wasn't really the "biological" donor..Jesus as King of kings had to show the lineage. Mary is the Levitical line..High Priest (as John the Baptist father was a high priest). Jesus had to have both. Luke shows Marys lineage. Great message!
BUT the white page states to me THE TRANSITIONAL 400 YEAR prep period for the New Testament and since Joseph is the natural father of all AFTER birth of Jesus, it is relevant to show his genealogy. Such as Jesus was brother to James of Joseph.
By adoption Jesus is the son of Joseph, looking at Mary you can trace her heritage to Nathan. So, I believe Mary is either only child or oldest of a sister, not sure. Numbers chapter 27 gives birth right to the daughter if no son. Jesus, is both rightful King and High Priest. How could he not be both....amazing! Amen
There is a big issue with the "Genealogy of Jesus". If Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit why is Josef in this conversation? Josef is not the father! ;)
Jechoniah, -- the same is Assir -- Shealtiel his son etc.(1) [He was called] Assir, because his mother conceived him in prison. Shealtiel, because God did not plant him in the way that others are planted. We know by tradition that a woman cannot conceive in a standing position. [yet she] did conceive standing. Another interpretation: Shealtiel, because God obtained [of the Heavenly court] absolution from His oath.(2) (1) I Ch. III, 17. Notwithstanding the curse that he should be childless and not prosper, after being exiled he was forgiven. (2) Which He had made, to punish Jechoniah with childlessness. --Soncino Talmud edition, with selected footnotes Pesikta de-Rab Kahana (5th c.) I accepted the repentance of Jeconiah: shall I not accept your repentance? A cruel decree had been imposed upon Jeconiah: Scripture says, This man Coniah is a despised, shattered image ('sb) (Jer. 22:28), for Jeconiah, according to R. Abba bar Kahana, was like a man's skull ('sm) which once shattered is utterly useless, or according to R. Helbo, like a wrapper of reed matting that dates are packed in, which, once emptied, is utterly useless. And Scripture goes on to say of Jeconiah: He is a vessel that none reaches for with delight (ibid.), a vessel, said R. Hama bar R. Hanina, such as a urinal; or a vessel, said R. Samuel bar Nahman, such as is used for drawing off blood. [These comments on Jeconiah derive from] R. Meir's statement: The Holy One swore that He would raise up no king out of Jeconiah king of Judah. Thus Scripture: As I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim . . . were the signet on a hand, yet by My right, I would pluck thee hence (Jer. 22:24), words by which God was saying, explained R. Hanina bar R. Isaac, "Beginning with thee, Jeconiah, I pluck out the kingship of the house of David." It is to be noted, however, that the Hebrew for "pluck thee" is not as one would expect 'tkk, but the fuller and less usual 'tknk, which may also be rendered "mend thee"--that is, mend thee by thy repentance. Thus in the very place, [the kingship], whence Jeconiah was plucked, amends would be made to him: [his line would be renewed].

Mary, may The Lord meet all your physical needs, but may He help you see Him and know who He is in your spiritual life! May you walk with Him daily. The fact is, when you come to believe in Jesus, you become a royal family because Jesus is King of Kings and He is our Elder brother. We become children of God by adoption 🙏

st r Exactly, if Joseph is not the Father we have no link to the line legally. Example, Bill and Jennifer are married. I father a child with Jennifer that makes me the biological father, but Bill (poor Bill) will be the legal father of the child. The child will then inherit Bills assets because he has a legal right. And Jennifer gets my child support 😞 That’s why we as sons and daughters of Yah inherit the Kingdom along with the firstborn of Yah! I’m so excited 😆
He needed to have a legal right to the throne of David which was given through your father. That's what's especially beautiful about God's plan is that through mother he had David's blood and through legal father he had David's right. Also, it's interesting how Mary's genealogy in Luke is a much cleaner and more righteous genealogy. Jesus is born of righteousness yet identifies with sinners as he would in that time be identified with Joseph's genealogy. Truly beautiful.
Use common sense. Nathan and Solomon is of the house of David, and so is Joseph, and he lived/born in a city of Judah. Mary was no where in the scripture is refer to as a judite, and did not live in a city of Judah.
Mr. Beggs also fails, where he says Matthew's genealogy is a "selective" genealogy. If Matthew's genealogy is selective, then his his understanding that there were 14 generations between Abraham and David; 14 between David and the deportation, and 14 between the deportation to Christ becomes meaningless 😢
14+14+14 generations. Problem is when you count the last 14 there are only 13. That is because in the KJV etc where it says Joseph husband of Mary in the original Aramaic it says Joseph" guardian" of Mary. It is pointing to Joseph of Arimathea Mary's uncle. He and the apostle John were named Paranymphos ie guardian of the made. When he claimed the body from Pilate it was his legal right
Bro that’s the linage of Joseph. That’s not the linage of Jesus. Joseph had no part in creating Jesus. God our Father was Jesus Father. This genealogy doesn’t tell where Jesus comes from. Just saying. Godbless you bro.
Not necessary. Have you never heard of a levirate marriage? Also the Bible says from seed of David not Solomon. That is why Luke traces to Nathan to avoid the curse of Jechonian

Jesus was not from Joseph, so how do you explained that?
I knew that Jesus Christ is my saviour and my salvation, but the Jews did not believed in him, why?
Rahab may well have been an innkeeper and a woman of substance.

My question is why is Luke's genealogy in Luke 3 different?

Great sermon, but please could you explain why you think Bathseba commited adultery.
This is not sermon he his sharing his wisdoms
@Yinx Rhythms etc because she had sexual relations with David while she was married. She did not cry out as you would for rape. She willingly went in with David and stayed with him.
13:08 OT NT
Another interpretation: Shealtiel, because God obtained [of the Heavenly court] absolution from His oath.(2)
(1) I Ch. III, 17. Notwithstanding the curse that he should be childless and not prosper, after being exiled he was forgiven.
(2) Which He had made, to punish Jechoniah with childlessness.

Pesikta de-Rab Kahana (5th c.)
I accepted the repentance of Jeconiah: shall I not accept your repentance?
Why should the bible is silent about the birth of Jesus christ.
God bless you 🙏 Are you by any chance related to Paul McCartney ???
I'm from direct descendant of Mary queen of Scots, someone told me im in the lineage of David and christ, is this so? Is this why everyone does me horribly and I'm kept homeless? Is there truth to this? I'm not a perfect person.
Unfortunately, people are horrible to each other as a norm. Your bloodline has nothing to do with it. However, home is where the heart is, and your heart is with truth.... :)
Mary Thompson, I believe you are correct. It’s in my ancestry tree too.
I doubt if you're a direct descendant of Jesus Christ, since He had no children.
Where does the 400yrs of Egyptian slavery fall in the genealogy?
So Joseph is Jesus's father ?
How come the Christians believe in Jesus & in his birth without any male intervention & still giving him fathers & grandfathers by tons !!!
Im here hi lets pray God is the air flowing threw you people your family thee are heald its a sin to let people covet or wrote doctoring yet its wrote atonement the day i die it do it do im dinosaur ill learn u allways a Adam to say well you my die covet my family adam
Why does it matter when Joseph is not the father?
Joseph is the legal father.
Joseph is from the bloodline of David as well. He’s the rightful king. Jesus is the rightful King of Jews through lineage as well.
Bible prophecy states that the Messiah will be from King David's bloodline.
Mary is the true bloodline as the Holy Spirit is the father
st r Exactly, if Joseph is not the Father we have no link to the line legally.
Example, Bill and Jennifer are married. I father a child with Jennifer that makes me the biological father, but Bill (poor Bill) will be the legal father of the child. The child will then inherit Bills assets because he has a legal right.
And Jennifer gets my child support 😞
That’s why we as sons and daughters of Yah inherit the Kingdom along with the firstborn of Yah!
But there is contradiction between Mathew und Luke... Completely not to concile
When he claimed the body from Pilate it was his legal right
Some say Mary had a father named Joseph as well as a husband named Joseph as Joseph was a common 1st Century Jewish name.
Look at grandsons Mian birthmark Buddha grandsons ok Buddha he said tell u people im comeing as Buddha after as Simon
Bro that’s the linage of Joseph. That’s not the linage of Jesus. Joseph had no part in creating Jesus. God our Father was Jesus Father. This genealogy doesn’t tell where Jesus comes from. Just saying. Godbless you bro.

Biologically Joseph was the father of Jesus. Spiritually God is the father of Jesus.
Biologically, Jesus has no earthly father. His blood only had 23 chromosomes.
Biologically, Jesus had no earthly father. His blood only had 23 Chromosomes.
Pointless genealogy. ....jesus is not the seed of Joseph
Not necessary. Have you never heard of a levirate marriage? Also the Bible says from seed of David not Solomon. That is why Luke traces to Nathan to avoid the curse of Jechonian
Mary was the descendant of King David too
No...Revelent.
