Chespin Trainer 0611 until now i still asking why the hell they put them on the game, why not put some charecters from metroid or f zero, all the mario crew was there why they put only a few from other series, they even put 2 marios, anyway this game was the only reason to buy a game cube, and when all my buddies were there i know this game worth it
The reason they put them in is because they wanted someone to represent the nes, so they chose excitebike, but didn't know how to make him look when he jumped, so they went with ice climbers. I'm just happy they put them in because ice climber was the first game I ever played (it was the gba port)
adri2shadow I personally prefer to have more videogame series represented with less characters each, instead of having fewer series represented by lots of characters each. The Ice Climbers were a pretty good choice in my opinion, just like Pit or R.O.B. were.
Gabo2oo i guess you are right, one of the things that i hate about melee, its that it got ALL the mario series crew, and most of the other series got only one charecter, like samus and capitan falcon, ness, DK etc etc. and WHY THE HELL they put pichu instead of scizor as a playable charecter????
+Lugbzurg Actually, it was bc of technical issues. The Wii u could handle having 16 ice climbers on the same screen, but the 3ds couldn't handle 8 characters at once (in terms of entities). They were all so happy for Samus. Girl hadn't been in a metroid game since the Super Nintendo. They were all so happy in general. I always get chills watching this.
SuperShadowify Yes, I got that. But the guy said they were "so happy" for her. If someone says "they were happy for her" and follows it up with "she hasn't been in a Metroid game since Super Nintendo", the implication is that they are happy that she is in a game, which is silly because she was in the previous SSB. If that is not the intended implication, then why bring up that she hasn't been in a Metroid game recently at all after stating that they were happy for her? What is the point here, if "they were happy in this video because she is in a game again" isn't what they were trying to say?
Dude... This just shows how much people used to appreciate video games. Everyone in the crowd is cheering for their favorite characters in excitement and every time a character is announced in a SSBs game, someone out there feels as if their voice was heard. Now we have reviews, rants, and angrier fan bases. God, 2001 was a great time to be alive.
"SETTLE IT! IN SMASH" lol. The new Smash will be out soon, and I hear this one is really good. No one truly hates it as of now, and it sounds as fun as Melee back in its glory days. Have fun smashing with some friends from your generation that you enjoy hanging with and create good everlasting memories. As long as Nintendo exists, gaming nostalgia will never die, no matter what generation you are from. I'm a Nintendo fanboy if you haven't noticed XD
look up Big Band from Skullgirls and tell me that Ridley is too big. He takes up like 6x the space as other characters and look at the game: perfectly balanced
+12345DJay Damn right, sir. u_u I'm glad I stumbled upon this video. :D I wouldn't even have thought of looking for something like a reaction video for a 2001 game. The world was so less crappy back then, too. :'(

@@k-leb4671 Im sure the opinions will change again over time as people discover new tech with the game like always and then some other garbage character will be the worst

Steve arteaga you do know super smash bros was meant to be a casual party game right? the game wasn't meant to be fast paced an exploit was discovered called "wave dashing" making the game fast paced
starlogic99 The developers knew about Wave dashing, which is why it was a huge topic when they were making brawl if they should leave it in. The decided not to because the skill gap between Advance and casual player was way too far apart. So they took it out and put in tripping. I love both Brawl and Melee but brawl is my favorite of the two. If I had a friend who was near the advance level you see some of these melee players I would never fight him. It wouldn't be fun. I don't have the time or the attention span to get to the level, and I just don't find it that fun either.I well say It is fun to watch though.
starlogic99 Melee was just generally a fast-paced game when you compare it to brawl. When you hit someone in melee they are "hitstunned" and are unable to act for a certain amount of time, and Brawl nearly eliminated this making combos hard to perform. Melee also had a heavier physics engine for the characters, making them fall faster and allowing more opportunities for combos. Wavedashing was known about by the developers on release, but they didn't see a use for it, so they left it in. Little did they know, wavedashing would be a critical way of moving and spacing, along with performing attacks that you could normally only perform while standing still. Because the hitstun system was ruined in Brawl, it was more of a counter-based game. You would try first to dodge your opponent's attacks and then land an attack of your own, rather than the aggressiveness that everyone was so used to in melee. Sure, Melee wasn't designed for competitive play at the time, but the aspects that they programmed in to it would make it a competitive game in the future. There was no way that Sakurai could have predicted that by making Melee the way that he made it in those 9 months of development, he would be creating one of the greatest competitive fighting games of all time.
Why do I cry so much every time I re-watch this? It almost feels like everyone is banding together for something amazing...it feels like fond memories coming back to life, and it feels like the reawakening of nostalgia. I think the intro, the song, the build-up, and the cinematic completely captivate the audience. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched.
And on that day, no one knew that this game would bring hundreds of thousands of people together intertwined into one community that has brought up many legends (e.g. Mew2King, C9 Mang0, [A]rmada, D1, Prog, and many many more), and has created several friendships and rivalries. Honestly watching this gives me chills. Not only because of the nostalgia but because of all the memories/moments that have happened on an international scale because of this masterpiece. It's rather beautiful how one work of art can bring so many people together.
I remember seeing this trailer as a kid. My mind was blown, repeatedly. Favorite moment of Nintendo E3, hands down. Only complaint is that I got so excited when I saw Ridley, and I'm STILL waiting for that to become a reality -_-
Why? He's too big and if you resize him to be smaller his proportions would be out of wack especially due to his wings. Anyways all he'd be is a clone of Charizard
***** "Too big" is an argument that died ages ago, I have no idea how people still think that's a viable excuse. And the only way he'd be a clone of Charizard is if the person picturing his moveset didn't have the imagination to come up with a new one for Ridley. That's like saying King K. Rool would be a clone of Bowser -_-
Michael Jacobsen Okay you only took a look at the first four words in my comment. he is big but he can be made smaller right? I mean they've obviously did that with bowser and plenty of other people, but why ridley? Well if you resize ridley his proportions would just look awful and stupid. His winds would still be too big and his head would just be goofy, unless if you use his Metroid 1 form, but still I doubt they would do that, and how would his moveset be unique? He would use his claws, maybe bite and fly around? Seems kinda bland for a character thats eagrly awaited.
***** I've seen so many of these kind of arguments that I lump the big/proportions/etc. into one amalgamation and dismiss it. However, since you pointed it out, I'll elaborate: Before Other M, I was in the same camp, as Ridley does have some pretty wonky proportions. But Other M Ridley's portions aren't as bad, and Other M Ridley is the one that is in the game. Furthermore, it's been proven that, regardless of peoples views of how big Ridley is, and regardless of what roll Ridley has in the next game, that Ridley has already been resized down in Smash 4, making this argument rather moot. Source: smashboards.com/threads/the-ridley-for-ssb4-thread-gematsu-drank-the-splounge-water.324284/ 2nd post, look for "shadow analysis" And while I could argue about moveset, I'd rather just point you to all the characters that are in the game, and what Sakurai has done with them. Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Pacman, he's done amazing things with some of the characters, and those were much harder to come up with a moveset.
***** did you even watch this video? go to 0:45 and picture ridley with his wings down/closed. right there you can see that he can absolutely be resized. they could literally take that picture and make a model for it and it would fit perfectly into smash 4. as far as saying he would be a clone of charizard, i don't even know how to respond to that. just because you can't think of a moveset for ridley (which would be super easy for somebody who has played any metroid game) doesnt mean that sakurai, who essentially has been making movesets for a living, couldnt
Huh, I've never seen that skeleton-looking guy before, seems like he was Miyamoto's old translator. I wonder when Bill was hir... ... ...wait... Bill?! BILL?! *BILL*?1
+Boogie Cousins the "nitpicks" aren't to "make a better game" they're mainly just used to make the game faster, but it's definitely made the game's lifetime a lot longer
For those of you wondering why all the hype for Samus, 2 reasons: 1. They all thought Ridley would be playable (You'd think they would've said the same for Wolf and Samurai Goroh back then). 2. The last Metroid game was Super Metroid for the SNES, unless Metroid Fusion was out back then, which I don't recall. Still, everyone kinda wanted more of Samus and we didnt get it for N64.
Seven Harmon People DID think of it back then. I remember a lot of rumors and talk just about Ridley. And yeah, I did watch the whole video, that's why I stated the second reason.
It seems more that they were just excited to see Metroid in general after skipping the previous generation than anything. I'm not saying Ridley didn't excite them, but it was more because of Samus AND Ridley, not them being excited for Ridley more than Samus.
Hearing everyone's cheering and knowing what this game has become over a decade later is simply heartwarming! I seriously got choked up hearing all the people get excited over this. So many memories of my sister and I playing this game all night Christmas eve up until it was time to unwrap presents Christmas morning. As a fan of both casually playing this game and watching all the professional tournaments filled with crazy techs and insane play, seeing the passion-filled community build the competitive scene from the ground up, it is such a wonderful sight to see. Little did we know, watching this video at this E3, that we would see this game hold so much more potential in the competitive scene than we would ever have dreamed. For a game to change the lives of millions of players all around the world, even 15 years after its released, it's nothing short of epic and wonderful.
Maybe people were expecting Ridley as playable as they all cheered when he was fighting Samus and was one of the only characters who were in the trailer to not be in it (apart from the Yoshi's and Pokemon)
At the time of this E3, it had been 7 years since Samus had been in Super Metroid. It was exciting for fans to see her again. Remember, this was before Fusion & Prime came out.
This was a moment of glory, glad something like this was recorded, watching this gave me goosebumps, the nostalgic intro, the theme, the crowd cheering....too good.
I loved the GameCube. From Resident Evil 4, Sunshine, Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario... But let's be real.. Melee was the crowning jewel of the GameCube. This game is very much alive in 2017 even.
Imagine being a time traveler, jumping on stage, and yelling, "20 YEARS FROM NOW, SOLID SNAKE AND RIDLEY AND SEPHIROTH AND..." just shouting out every character and blowing people's brains before getting hauled off the stage by the Time Police
Holy hell, I still get giddy watching this over a decade later. It's really humbling to see everyone come together and get so excited over Smash. SSBM was a huge part of my childhood and I still play it today.
I had chills watching this. I was never there yet just watching how people first reacted to one of my favorite childhood games with the most nostalgic intros in gaming history is just amazing.
They were hyped because there hasn't been in a Metroid fan in 8 years, back then everybody hated Ridley anyways and had the logic to know he wouldn't be in the game.
But he was right there! I get that just the sight of something new Metroid related made people happy at that point, but I do legitimately think that those people thought Ridley would be in the game. I mean, Bowser was also in that trailer, so, why not? sure, he wasn't in the gameplay trailer afterwards, but neither was Zelda and she was undoubtedly in the game at that point. Despite the fact that I absolutely love the Melee intro, the fact that Ridley is shown fairly prominently in it but wasn't in the game besides a trophy always has annoyed me. At the very least, it does give a pretty good counter to the "HE'S TOO BIG" argument.
Omg i just love nintendo, they are seriously the only people who try to satisfy the fans, you guys should see the reactions to the new characters on the newest ssmb, its just amazing when you see or hear the voices in shock as they witness the incoming characters (not gonna spoil it for some ;) )
that's not true, Sony made Sly 4 JUST to satisfy a few hundred thousand fans after Sly went dead for so many years. lately Nintendo has disappointing me with the lack of F-Zero, StarFox (till VERY recently) AND the fact that we'll probably NEVER see Mother 3 get an official American release...
maybe that's what I meant. I think Nintendo should release Mother 3 on 3ds VC, StarFox 2 on WiiU and 3ds VC, Dinosaur Planet on WiiU VC, and the slew of other should-be good and often times nearly complete games that were cancelled.
Official statements apparently say the devs knew about the physics exploits but just hoped that the players wouldn't find out. Because apparently they don't think Nintendo fans are good at finding glitches...
+HiddenTalent77 L-cancelling isn't a glitch. In fact, it is less of a glitch than the previous rendition of it, in s64. There's no way a technique that directly halves you landing lag to be something not meant to be in the game. Something that removes landing lag entirely? Not saying it is, but that is much more likely to be a glitch than melee's cancel.
This is like watching a rock fall into the water with ripples that still extend to this day. To see the moment that started the love for this game is truly incredible when you think about how many people it's impacted and continues to.
Back in the day Melee was... a dream. I have never been so addicted to a game ever again. One of my friends (who I knew years later) said he used to ACTUALLY DREAM with the game. The jump from N64 was HUUUUUGE. Every time I heard that music I feel it in my stomach. Nostalgia is a powerful spell.
You gotta love how only one guy recognizes the ice climbers.
(During the intro at least)
Chespin Trainer 0611 until now i still asking why the hell they put them on the game, why not put some charecters from metroid or f zero, all the mario crew was there why they put only a few from other series, they even put 2 marios, anyway this game was the only reason to buy a game cube, and when all my buddies were there i know this game worth it

+SmAsH NinJa and by this point Ridley wasn't really requested
Why would they cheer for Ridley?
He's too big! Okay, maybe not on the trailer.

I got the biggest chills....
R.I.P Ice Climbers, you may be gone but never forgotten.
What about Isai?
Hence why I said "many many more" if I put down the names of everyone who made it the comment would be a novel.
Aight.
+TokyoKami I mean isai and Ken were the original smash gods
I remember seeing this trailer as a kid. My mind was blown, repeatedly. Favorite moment of Nintendo E3, hands down.
Only complaint is that I got so excited when I saw Ridley, and I'm STILL waiting for that to become a reality -_-
Why? He's too big and if you resize him to be smaller his proportions would be out of wack especially due to his wings. Anyways all he'd be is a clone of Charizard
*****
"Too big" is an argument that died ages ago, I have no idea how people still think that's a viable excuse.
*****
I've seen so many of these kind of arguments that I lump the big/proportions/etc. into one amalgamation and dismiss it. However, since you pointed it out, I'll elaborate:
Before Other M, I was in the same camp, as Ridley does have some pretty wonky proportions.

2nd post, look for "shadow analysis"
And while I could argue about moveset, I'd rather just point you to all the characters that are in the game, and what Sakurai has done with them.
Just from watching this the memories of this is giving me dem goosebumps
Huh, I've never seen that skeleton-looking guy before, seems like he was Miyamoto's old translator. I wonder when Bill was hir... ... ...wait...
Bill?!
BILL?!
*BILL*?1
That's BILL?
fuhrer
*That's BILL!*
Bill Nye The Science Guy!
BIG BILL MY BOYS
little bill
I’m gonna cry looking at this. Hearing the cheers of everyone and the raw emotion it’s unlike anything I’ve ever felt… just so amazing
This is my favourite game of all time
Leo Nast back when people played the game because they liked it not to find flaws in it to nitpick and to "help the developers make a better game"
***** yeah, no game will ever surpass my playtime on this lol
+Boogie Cousins the "nitpicks" aren't to "make a better game" they're mainly just used to make the game faster, but it's definitely made the game's lifetime a lot longer
hearing the reactions to the opening genuinely brought a tear to my eye and i dont know why
this was before 9/11
Obviously! M2K hasn't entered the scene yet...
wow
+Michael Zvaniga Nice one
Bush did 9/11
America became the laughing stock of the world. Business went on as usual.
For those of you wondering why all the hype for Samus, 2 reasons:
Dude, nobody cared about Ridley back then. Watch the rest of the video.
Fusion wasn't out yet. It came out a year later the same time as Prime. So yeah, this was the first sighting of Samus on the GameCube.
“They really dope for that one” 😂
There was a time where E3 was about video games and not shitty apps on your counsel.
Fuckin' preach. Apparently you're considered a "hardcore gamer" if you play Call of Duty.
Fuck the media.
Melee4lyf
Tony Stark This.
I hate those damn counsels. Always trying to talk about shit n stuff.
Watching this makes me cry... because you realized you in the era when gaming is evolving into something new
Did anyone else hear that guy say "Dude , dis shit foe real!"
0:43 Everyone thinks Ridley is in the game LOL
I think they're just excited to see a 3D model of Ridley.
ToadGaming now he's in Ultimate.
Now he is
Yesss
20 years later this hits so intensely, so proud that I got to experience this game and the journey it took me on
If I was there I would have literally shit bricks.
One of the best games ever was born... So me too...
Maybe people were expecting Ridley as playable as they all cheered when he was fighting Samus and was one of the only characters who were in the trailer to not be in it (apart from the Yoshi's and Pokemon)
Yes! Man! OH! YES!
Tears of joy of the crowd there.
3:54 15 YEARS LATER THIS GUY CALLED IT
Sorry what did he say?? "15 years and Ice Climbers.." wut .-.
paul what did he say
15 years later and no Ice Climbers.
Finally, thanks for clearing that up....
Lisandro Munoz I think he said 15 years later no ice climbers or sheik
It's been 15 years since this E3 and I still get chills watching this intro.
This game came out the day I was born ^w^. No wonder I'm so obsessed with Smash.
That's an awesome birthday. :3
2401blue :D
holy shit i'm old.
MY birthday is going to be on the day that ssb4 is going to be released.
i'm better than you (:
pk pulse fall Congrats to you.. But how does that really make you better than me? :I
0:42 The crowd got so hype for Ridley.
Not really, they were getting hyped for Samus.
At the time of this E3, it had been 7 years since Samus had been in Super Metroid. It was exciting for fans to see her again. Remember, this was before Fusion & Prime came out.
Yeah and as you saw after when they showed actual game play they showed samus and the crowed went hyped
Super Deluxe Bros. cAPTAIN cAPITAL iS sAILING oNCE aGAIN
SuperDeluxeBros Really? He asked everyone?
I have never gotten this many goosebumps after watching a video before
This was a moment of glory, glad something like this was recorded, watching this gave me goosebumps, the nostalgic intro, the theme, the crowd cheering....too good.
Who's watching in 20XX?
I'm watching in 2277 tho
Well you have to if the video came out in 2012.
well, I started playing 20XX before I read this comment so I guess...
You win
blip
I loved the GameCube. From Resident Evil 4, Sunshine, Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario...
But let's be real.. Melee was the crowning jewel of the GameCube. This game is very much alive in 2017 even.
3:45
*shows Ice Climbers*
Guy: "Man, they really dug for that one."
HAHAHAHAHAHA! XD
Imagine being a time traveler, jumping on stage, and yelling, "20 YEARS FROM NOW, SOLID SNAKE AND RIDLEY AND SEPHIROTH AND..." just shouting out every character and blowing people's brains before getting hauled off the stage by the Time Police
1:05 is one of the most recognizable game intros's scene.
The intro always gives me chills. Seeing these people so excited to see it for the first time amplifies it so much more.
Seeing their reaction always puts a smile on my face.
I can't wait till this comes out!
I heard someone yell Kirby in excitement. xd
I think I heard the same dude be like "Ness! Ness!" and "Ice Climbers?!"
light sadly for them Kirby was the worst Kirby in melee
Never gets old. I remember my brother showing me this when I was like 5-7 years old, now 18.. Dayum, time flies when you're older.
God there’s definitely some good times playing smash Brose with the old friends on sleepovers when I was growing up. This was our jam.
Not a lot of people scream for fox but look at us now.
0:45 Poor crowd definitely thought Ridley was gonna be in the game 😂
This trailer is missing the best part :( no announcer to announce the name ;_;
The game was still in development at the time of the announcement. It probably wasn't added in until later.
Yeah I know, I was just pointing that out XD
There should be an app of Smash bros
Brandon Anderson application you say? dolphin for windows 7 plays Project M and Melee very well.
Kashaku3 I meant for Android and tablets.
I'm watching this and I'm crying as I remember my best moments of my child hood :'')
you know, I bet most of the people there thought that Ridley was a playable character because of this.
They were hyped because there hasn't been in a Metroid fan in 8 years, back then everybody hated Ridley anyways and had the logic to know he wouldn't be in the game.
*Metroid game
All i can say, is smash ultimate
Omg i just love nintendo, they are seriously the only people who try to satisfy the fans, you guys should see the reactions to the new characters on the newest ssmb, its just amazing when you see or hear the voices in shock as they witness the incoming characters (not gonna spoil it for some ;) )
Megaman reaction?
Oh wait forgot to put Greninja reaction.
that's not true, Sony made Sly 4 JUST to satisfy a few hundred thousand fans after Sly went dead for so many years. lately Nintendo has disappointing me with the lack of F-Zero, StarFox (till VERY recently) AND the fact that we'll probably NEVER see Mother 3 get an official American release...
maybe that's what I meant. I think Nintendo should release Mother 3 on 3ds VC, StarFox 2 on WiiU and 3ds VC, Dinosaur Planet on WiiU VC, and the slew of other should-be good and often times nearly complete games that were cancelled.
I own Mother 3 on a GBA cart. I played it on my Gameboy Player. Such an awesome game.
Never before or since has there been so much pure joy in one room.
That music, the visual , the scenes, the delivery, it was all so perfect.
2:20 clearly kirby cancels that dair, a proff that sakuray know more than wahts he is telling us
Official statements apparently say the devs knew about the physics exploits but just hoped that the players wouldn't find out.
+Thejbomber 14 How is that relevant?
It was actually stated to be a technique in the Japanese website for Smash 64.
OH MY GOD HE DOES
Peach and Bowser were pretty high on the poll of wanted characters back then, yet nobody seemed very excited to see them XD
that was the Japanese poll. who knows what the western poll would look like back then.
how am I even lying?
+Suigetsu Hozuki I think it was because people expected them to be in the next installment anyways.
17 years later and they have a plant in smash bros now.
This is like watching a rock fall into the water with ripples that still extend to this day. To see the moment that started the love for this game is truly incredible when you think about how many people it's impacted and continues to.
0:59 “Ice Climbers?”
“Yeah! 😉👍🏻”
Yeah, I remember when Melee was new. Such an improvement over the original N64 game in only two years.
Oh man. So this is when all the pain and suffering started for us Ridley fans. Don't worry lads, we'll pull through!
4:04 is that the sound of someone advancing film on a disposable camera? Man I feel old.
I'm so happy this video exists :')
Even after all these years i still got the same feels, man i'm nearly in tears look at this masterpiece
one of gaming's most memorable moments
>That guy who yelled "Kirby"
This video is magical.
I wish I went back
In time 😭 I bought this game at Walmart when they still had in stock in 2005 and was addicted to the smash series ever since
4:04 At the end there the guy getting ready to take a picture with one of those disposable cameras. Daaang.
