Thank you so much for the video. I bought a new one and was struggling to get the flame up. Now I know the reason why it wasn't happening. Great work!!

I had the exact same problem. I will say I tried everything. I contacted Coleman, they sent me a new generator and assured me I was operating it correctly when I explained my issue and exactly what I was doing.
I still couldn’t get it to work and contacted Coleman again. I went through exactly what I was doing and they assured me once again that the problem was with the unit. Coleman sent a complete new stove and just said toss the first one.
I took the new stove to REI, ever though I bought it at Walmart. REI could not get to work either and offered a replacement, probably because my purchase history with REI is insane. Tons of camping gear.
Finally I set the two stoves together and basically took one apart comparing it to the other and just played with it for a day until I happened on the solution with the pieces.
I faulted the directions. I truly believe Coleman and REI did their absolute best to insure I was a happy customer. They both went above and beyond the call of duty I my opinion.
I just wish the directions were clearer

Strange. I found the instructions on pressurising a 533 perfectly adequate. This is exactly the same mechanism and the sticker on the inside of the 424 lid is pretty much perfect. 1 full turn from fully closed is all the pump needs to open and 1 full turn to close it again.... it's strange the things people struggle with.

Thanks for posting this. I too had the same issue of not opening the pump konb far enough. Worked the first time but not afterwards. It does not mention how many times to turn the knob in the directions.

These stoves can be finicky. The pump knob must be open sufficiently enough to pump it, and then one must hold his finger or thumb over the hole in the end when on the down stroke, and keep it plugged so the air doesn't escape, while at the same time turning it tight again, and this is a cumbersome task.
Getting the right pressure is important in these stoves. What you want it to see the blue ring of fire coming out of every one of the small vents around the outer edge of those "cookies". It will usually make an nice hissing sound too, and this is the most efficient burn. It's a hot, efficient burn, but to get it right, the pressure must be right.
If it ever makes a lot of noise and sputter in the big chamber, shut down the stove, let it cool a bit and try to light it again. That thing can get so hot that it turns cherry red, and that is not how it is supposed to burn. So just shut it down if that happens, try pumping it again, holding a finger on the hole in the pump handle on the down strokes, and then turn it tight again, and light it. It doesn't have to be real tight, but it does have to be tight enough to not leak out the air pressure.
The tiny lever on the tank is supposed to be turned pointing up when lighting and down when cooking. I'm not sure what it does, but that is what the directions say to do. The right pressure is important. When it works right you will see it, and know what to look for in the future.
Also, the layers that make up the many tiny vents on the burner can become dirty. Sometimes they can be cleaned without taking it apart, (without taking out the Philips head screw) with some carb spray cleaner or something, but be very careful with that, making sure the stove is cold, the tank is off, and that it dries before you try to light it again. Carb cleaner is very flameable.

on all of my older coleman stoves and lanterns the pump only has to be opened 1 turn to make them work, looks like the new ones are different for some reason? also when you light the stove with the lighting lever up it opens an atomizer port in the fuel valve so the burner gets a mist of fuel and air for quick and easy lighting but this quickly reduces the air pressure in the tank so as soon as you turn the lever down you need to pump pressure into the tank or you will get yellow flames and lots of soot.

After the pump is a valve with a ball in IT. Just a bit of sand causes: It does not close 100%. So clean that part with air pressure or so.
