Garden Transformation || Creating A Shade Corner Retreat 🤫🌳🍄😌

- Today I am starting on what I’m calling my secret shady corner. It’s a lovely spot in the garden where I have stepping stones leading to my garden illusion gate, which o love as it’s a focal point plus it brings light to this dark corner which gets no sun at all.
For those of you who have been watching my garden progress for a while, you will remember that I have 2 rows of beautiful boxwoods lining the stepping stones, but after battling box tree moths and caterpillars for around 4 years, I unfortunately removed them all as I’d just had enough of putting out pheromone traps and spraying them all the time.
So it’s time now to revamp this area and I’m going to add a seat as it’s one of my favourite views of the garden so I think it would be very lovely to take advantage of that. I just need to clear all the existing plants away, tidy up the area and re-level it, laying the stepping stones back, and adding some more leading to the seat, and then I’m ready for the fun part - the planting!!

You have been busy! It is lovely to have a shade garden area. They are so different from the other parts of the garden. Ferns and Hostas are a perfect marriage. I'm looking forward to seeing Richard making your secret garden throne!
🤣🤣 yes, I’ve told him he has to do it now because I have told everyone 🤣 and I cannot wait to see my new throne too 👸 hostas are very lovely. I have been given some names of the big thick blue leaf ones so I’m going to see if I can find them. And ferns too, which I’ve never had. In fact I have quite a long list now which is great because it’s all going to be a lot of bare soil in pots at the moment so it’s going to be a bit difficult to find things. I have just been outside with the dogs one last time before bed and … oh dear … just noticed my gunnera MANICATA is shrivelling up in its pot. I may have killed it 😔😔🤨😏 look forward to your video this week, see you then! 🥰

Janette I just love your garden. That mirror gate is so fabulous. I also have lots of slugs. You could use those egg shells form the eggs and bacon Richard is making you, and use them crushed up around the base of plants as a slug deterrent. Looking forward to the bench or seat. Take care!

Hi Deborah, yes! I never think to show you my shed, that area only used to just get piled with junk. I’m looking forward to my little area too, I’m not one for sitting out directly in the sun, not for very long anyway. I told Rich he has to do it now because I’ve told everyone 😁😍

Hi Janette! This area is going to be beautiful, just as beautiful as the rest of your garden is already! I always watch and "like" your videos, just do not always comment but so look forward to them each week. Here in 9b central Florida I have just one more batch of plants to get into the ground before the heat sets in (well I say that now but I can always make an excuse to go to my favorite family owned garden center to just look around and then of course I HAVE to buy something, haha). 😁 Hope you enjoy your weekend.

Oh its looking good already, can't wait to see the seat in situ! Astilbe's do well in my shady side of the garden along with all the other plants you mentioned. And I didn't know about slugs not liking the thicker blue hostas! I love hostas though!! xx

Sharon you are right!! I seem to unintentionally have so many euonymus plants 🤣 the poppy I moved has died unfortunately. I knew they don’t like being moved … oh well. I’m looking forward to seeing my bench too, I told Rich he’s got to do it now because I’ve told everyone 😂 hope you’re ok. 😍

Hello Paul and thank you so much!! I’ve had fun thinking about this area, and in fact I’ve spent this weekend tweaking it all quite a bit after spending all week looking at it. I planted shade plants this morning. The shade is provided by a huge old holly and finding a pocket between the roots is difficult. No big plants…just tiny specimens. I planted hosta, hellebores, ferns (autumn fern and holly fern), heuchera, sweet woodruff, ligularia, and acanthus. I am in coastal North Carolina (US), zone 8.

Fascinating video.! My little courtyard is North facing and in shade most of day. After a LOT of trial and error I've got mostly evergreens in containers, including bay trees, olive trees, cypresses, also a huge acer, hostas and ferns. I would be careful moving the gunnera into too much sun. Never had one but e veryone seems recommend them for a moist, shady spot. Ps I know I keep saying this but your videos are getting so professional... you should be on the telly🥰

I filmed this on Saturday morning and last night (Tuesday) I noticed it’s poor leaves are looking shrivelled up, because it’s more in the sun now. So as soon as I get home I’m going to move it somewhere else. 🥰

It's coming along nicely, look forward to seeing it in it's glory over summer. Bleeding heart and astilbe both like shade, I planted a bleeding heart and didn't know when they're done blooming they disappear. It was a wonderful surprise when I seen it coming back last spring =^)

I have same problem with Hostas they get destroyed in my garden by snails. The copper tape doesnt work either sadly. Hoping for a nice weekend of gardening myself this weekend 🤞. xx
Thank you Lou, it’s been so miserable cold and rainy that I do hope we get a nice weekend 😊🙏 I’m going to try the big thick rubbery leaf hostas if I can find one, because they really are one of my favourite plants. I tried the copper rings which didn’t work, and I put pellets down but Lotte kept eating them 😝 and I’ve tried the beer traps too. Hope you’re ok 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Yes im good thanks Janette. I might be tempted if i see a nice hardy looking hosta. Mine are in pots and end up with holes in the leaves from snails. I do like them though.

Janette it's going to be fabulous! There's so much you can do with it I am excited for you. Acers are good with shade quite a few of them are very happy in complete shade, in fact ukigomo goes the most incredible white if you can give it lots of shade. I've just dug a large fern up I'm not sure what to do with I think it's hart's tongue curly ish fronds anyway! You could have had that if you were closer but I'm up in North Yorkshire :( Cant wait to see what it looks like when you've finished it I know it will be wonderful x

Oh thank you soulgirl and I’ve written Acer onto my list. Great idea and I’ll look for a ukigomo, which I’ve never heard of but sounds real interesting. Lots of plants are still asleep at the moment so it’s going to be a bit difficult plant shopping when I can’t see what things look like but im hoping to go to a lovely nursery I know quite near, this weekend, only trouble is it’s all outside with no WiFi so I can’t Google things to see what they are, but it’s a lovely place, it’s where I got all the plants for my front garden which have all stayed really healthy so far and it’s not an expensive place. Thank you for the offer of your fern 😊 if you come down to Essex any time you can come and visit 🥰

Oh I still think that you need something taller than a bench height .... maybe before Richard builds it you could experiment with some chairs of different heights .... other than that .... I think that the space is going to be soooo cozy and nice .... excited to see what you end up with ... I know that the Heucheras that you have planted by the fountain are so colorful and inviting ... Hello Renee, thank you 🙏 I got my gate online quite a few years ago from primrose.Co.uk and they still have them, all different styles too. Don’t know if they ship abroad though, but just Google ‘garden illusion gate’. I’m looking forward to having a gin & tonic in my new spot. 😍

Oh yes, Happy New (Tax) Year 🎉🎉 urgh I have to do Richard’s year end now, I do his accounts and tax return etc, it flies by, feels like I’ve only just done it. My egg & bacon was very lovely, he’s just discovered cooking after 40 years of me doing it 🤣 and he’s a far better cook than me.
