I just love Four Lions. It does such a great job of satirizing extremists without throwing the rest of Islam under the bus.

Some parts don't make sense to me, omar is supposed to be extremist yet they mock his devout brother. Omar's wife encourages him to commit murder and blow himself up like its normal. Yet they treat his brother like he's the bad/crazy one.

There are some depressing videos of him being interviewed by dreary journalists who are trying to sensationalise it to be oh-so controversial and inflammatory, whilst being completely joyless about Chris' stories of the real life farcical jihadists who inspired the film.
This one is excellent though, some really good questions and his answers are superb.

RE Chris's question about using animals as bombs, the Soviets did exactly this during WW2. Dogs were fitted with bombs and trained to run underneath enemy tanks. Unfortunately, in a tragedy worthy of Four Lions, the dogs were trained using Soviet T-34s. In the heat of battle, they would avoid the German Panzers and go straight for their human comrades. Thank you Horrible Histories.

We've been using animals as bombs for at least 600 years. It was common to set pigs or cows on fire and blast them over castle walls with a trebuchet. In the world wars they used bats/dogs/pidgeons/donkeys. Hell the RAF have even parachuted cats and beavers into Borneo.

The best dynamic was the Omar-Waj one, throughout the film Omar is looking out for Waj who’s clearly the least intelligent/most impressionable one and he’s lucky to have Omar look out for him but in the end it’s Omar that kills Waj by confusing him and using his child likeness , despite Waj openly stating that he doesn’t wish to do it and believes that it’s wrong.

I watched this film on my own hype in my head as I loved Brasseye / Day Today etc..and didn't like it, being honest. I then watched it again on the telly a few years later and thought it was hilarious whilst also imagining it could be uncomfortably close to the truth. Yep, I think this guy is pretty bloody smart whilst also ultimately being a comedian.

+Jacky Jaxon I warn people on recommendation of this, that it isn't going to be just some laugh-a-minute slapstick comedy, or brutal satire. It's got some genuine depth, as well as some fine dark comedy. It's honestly one of my favourite films, but not in the way I was expecting.
