David Bowie's first instrument was saxophone. He took lessons as a child from Ronnie Ross, a noted London jazz sideman. Ross played the sax solo in Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side," which Bowie produced. You can hear Bowie play sax on his cover of the Stax classic "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd on his "David Live" album, recorded in Philadelphia in 1974.

I think I'm edging towards Progressive Rock Bowie so - The Man who Sold the World next. If you want a flavour of that you can't go wrong with the title track. As Mama said - "David Bowie's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". But it'll give you life.

It's wild that you guys heard Elvis in this. He actually wrote this song FOR Elvis, with whom he shared a record label (RCA) but Elvis never recorded it. Bowie did play sax on quite a few of his songs, and he played guitar on most of the Diamond Dogs album. He also contributed keyboards, etc. to the "Berlin trilogy" albums.
Trailblazer...he pushed the boundaries of music, especially during that time period...my first Bowie song with Major Tom...I wasn't sure if I like it or not, but the more I listened, the more I liked.

I admit that during the 70s, he took a back seat to the funk, blues & soul I was listening to. Fast forward to 2006. I have a daughter who had discovered Bowie and she talked me into taking her to see Bowie live at Chastain Park in Atlanta. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Imagine 10,000 people, in unison, singing "wham, bam, thank you ma'am," from "Suffragette City," ... he played for 3 hours with no break. He ran into SRV at Montreaux and enlisted him to play on "Let's Dance" and "China Girl." Long story short -- too late -- you guys have just begun to discover one of the greatest musicians of all time. "I'm Afraid of Americans" is another. "Angie" by the Rolling Stones was about David's wife. He later married the beautiful Somalian model, Iman, and they were together for some 20 years before his death. As always, you guys are the BEST reactors I've seen. Keep up the good work!!

Bowie, no matter what stage of his career, was always cool. Every time I try to pick my favorite album by him, I get confounded because each are unique. I, personally, like "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" as a complete album, but "Golden Years" and "Young Americans" are possibly my favorite songs by him.
Part of that movie was filmed in Artesia, New Mexico - a small, oil field town in the middle of nowhere. The last place you would expect David Bowie to show up.

Your on a roll guys. I saw Bowie in YYZ in 1974. Space Oddity was one of his best songs. Midway thru the show the lights went out and the opening guitar strumming of that song started. All of a sudden a spotlight flashed on him high in the air in a cherry picker singing the opening lines. He had bright orange hair with white powder caked on his face and a dark blue lightening bolt across his face from ear to ear. It was great. Yes the song 'Fame' is great. Funky and right up your alley. Also, yes he played multiple instruments. RIP David...

Just want to give a shout out to Carlos Alomar, who keeps it strong on rhythm guitar on many Bowie albums. If I recall correctly, the bassist here is George Murray, who was with Bowie through Scary Monsters in 1980. Great rhythm section.

He played some guitar and keyboards but he mostly had other musicians. Station to Station might be my favorite album of his. Alladin Sane, Low and Scary Monsters are up there as well. After you’ve listened to his whole catalog the Live album he performed in Philly is excellent

David Bowie went to finishing school in the U.k.to be a graphic artist..He consulted with one of his professors about what to pursue Hus art or music...He told a young David Jones ( real name) to do what he loved and made him happy.. His professor...Professor Frampton. Peter Framptons dad.
As a life long fan of Bowie..basically across his 50 year career. I can highly recommend you guys take the never ending, forever interesting journey of Bowies music. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice ..once at the beginning of his journey, then his final world reality tour ..believe me he is that good and all the incredible musicians who worked along side him..Brilliant. My favorite artist. Nobody but nobody can cram him in a musical box. A Legendary musician. If you don't care particularly for one song, go to the next one bc every song in his massive repertoire is different.
I think you guys hit right on it in regards to creativity, and him being different than other singers. These days people work so hard on being a great technical singer looking for a vehicle (song) to showcase their talent whereas back in the day, these guys were working around their limitations as they wrote material. We now seem to have gone more toward pro singers buying songs from pro writers like pop music was done before the Beatles established bands largely writing their own stuff. We do also have amateur untrained artists coming up with great stuff, too, which pushes the creativity. Love the reactions!
That was the single version with a fade out and a different mix. More Philly Soul than disco (late 75). His Young Americans (with Fame on it) and Station to Station were his trip in the funky/soul lane. You can dig deeper in there with Stay or Station to Station (10 minutes epic!).

First white artist to appear on soul train. The thin white duke. Bowie is a highly respected artist in the U.K. Artist being the word. He was a singer songwriter, musician, actor and fashion icon. Not to mention he married one of the most beautiful women on the plant. The man was a one off. When you’re talking influential there’s Bowie then there’s the rest.

Fantastic flashback. Such an era. His androgynous image gave him a different fan base. I really love the guy. Back then we were supposed to be creeped out. He married a beautiful black model and I think some part of the industry shunned Bowie for marrying a supermodel. Btw: Bowie could play many instruments which helped his writing. But he always preferred more talented musicians than himself back him because his voice was his preferred instrument. Hope his wife is doing well these days.
You're right. He used to show his demos to the musicians and tell them something like "I want you to play this, but better than me" and then he gave them free hand to improve the instrumental part. Iman seems to be well these days. I think that it was hard for her during the first years after David's death, but she said that the isolation during the Covid pandemic actually helped her deal with her grief and come to terms with it. After the restrictions ended, Iman became really active. She has appeared on TV again, she has launched a perfume and she has a line of clothes now besides her old business with the cosmetics. She says she is not interested in remarrying, because, in her mind, she is still married to David, she has been wearing a necklace with his name since his death, she still talks about him in the present tense, but she seems more "open" now.

David Bowie went to finishing school in the U.k.to be a graphic artist..He consulted with one of his professors about what to pursue Hus art or music...He told a young David Jones ( real name) to do what he loved and made him happy.. His professor...Professor Frampton. Peter Framptons dad.

As a life long fan of Bowie..basically across his 50 year career. I can highly recommend you guys take the never ending, forever interesting journey of Bowies music. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice ..once at the beginning of his journey, then his final world reality tour ..believe me he is that good and all the incredible musicians who worked along side him..Brilliant. Enjoy.

I think you guys hit right on it in regards to creativity, and him being different than other singers. These days people work so hard on being a great technical singer looking for a vehicle (song) to showcase their talent whereas back in the day, these guys were working around their limitations as they wrote material. We now seem to have gone more toward pro singers buying songs from pro writers like pop music was done before the Beatles established bands largely writing their own stuff.
We do also have amateur untrained artists coming up with great stuff, too, which pushes the creativity.

Early 70's Bowie. The Ziggy Stardust album. This is later. I was a freshman when I saw Bowie. Doing the Ziggy tour. No wonder I'm a head case.
That was the single version with a fade out and a different mix. More Philly Soul than disco (late 75). His Young Americans (with Fame on it) and Station to Station were his trip in the funky/soul lane. You can dig deeper in there with Stay or Station to Station (10 minutes epic!).
Bowie was a fabulous creative mother for certain. Love his creations so unique and fabulous!

Side note, please take a look at Rick Rubins McCartney 3,2,1 documentary/talk with Paul McCartney, and the The Beatles: Get Back it’s long but you will be gobsmacked seeing legends creat and they were just 27 at the time. No need to react but you two will really appreciate it.
“Oh! You Pretty Things” is a fun one too. I always wanted to learn the cheesy dance on the movie A Knights Tale because of this song. Its always been one of my favs from him so hearing it randomly on there was great for my teenage soul. I hope everyone is having a great week. -Amber

Bowie typically played most or all the instruments on his albums. Not sure if anyone in the comments mentioned he performed this song on Soul Train. Making it the second time he performed on the show.

His Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs albums are fantastic. He shared a birthday with Elvis. Check out his song "Ashes to Ashes".

Fantastic flashback. Such an era. His androgynous image gave him a different fan base. I really love the guy. Back then we were supposed to be creeped out. He married a beautiful black model and I think some part of the industry shunned Bowie for marrying a supermodel. Btw: Bowie could play many instruments which helped his writing. But he always preferred more talented musicians than himself back him because his voice was his preferred instrument. Hope his wife is doing well these days.
You're right. He used to show his demos to the musicians and tell them something like "I want you to play this, but better than me" and then he gave them free hand to improve the instrumental part.
Iman seems to be well these days. I think that it was hard for her during the first years after David's death, but she said that the isolation during the Covid pandemic actually helped her deal with her grief and come to terms with it. After the restrictions ended, Iman became really active. She has appeared on TV again, she has launched a perfume and she has a line of clothes now besides her old business with the cosmetics. She says she is not interested in remarrying, because, in her mind, she is still married to David, she has been wearing a necklace with his name since his death, she still talks about him in the present tense, but she seems more "open" now.
