The characters in the film are fictional, but the older women playing baseball during the end credits were the real players from the league.
Came here to say the same.
Some of the characters are based on real people, Harvey -- Hershey, Dugan was based on 2 of the real managers, but the Sisters were fictional.
Thanks for sharing your reaction 😊
@@vly9257 Harvey was based on William Wrigley, as in Wrigley Gum, of Chicago Illinois. The guy Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, is named for.
cool info. I have watched this more times than I can count and I guess I never realized that.
Glad you guys enjoyed this. Great movie great reactions. The guy who you said I know I've seen him before was Hollywood producer and actor Gary Marshall. Stated many sitcoms including the odd couple. The producer and director of this movie was his sister Penny Marshall aka Laverne from Laverne and Shirley a number one sitcom from the 70s.
I love that neither one of u had any idea that was Madonna. That’s how she knows how to dance like that.
Laughing at the same thing. HA. 0% clue.
And she was singing the theme song at the end too and it still didn’t ring that bell 😭
Was just thinking the same thing! haha
Madona's music is now considered "oldies" 😂
@@Reclining_Spuds …which is horrifying & makes me feel older than F🤭
As a teen I was fortunate enough to have known an elderly woman who was in the AAGPBL. She was sharp and had so many pictures and stories, it was a joy! She played for the Milwaukee Chicks.
That's awesome..they helped keep baseball alive.
My friend's mother was a Racine Belle. She loved this movie. Even though they "Hollywooded it up" a bit it really captured the feel of the league.
17:47 How did y’all miss the driver throwing dirt in this poor woman’s face? 😂
They run their mouths too much talking about when they were playing baseball and stuff, missing the movie.
I’ve always missed it!😂
Seems like they're not reacting to the whole movie, just the highlights.
Yep. They were too busy yapping
@@mikelundquist4596 No, they react to the whole movie but edit it down for RUclips. Most people only put full reactions on Patreon.
To be completely fair, it’s not Dottie’s job to manage Kit’s jealousy, and Kit does not show any concern for Dottie unless there’s something she wants from her (i.e. getting Kit to Chicago, warning her to leave the dance hall, etc,) No “have you heard from Bob recently?” I say this as a youngest, less physically talented sister. It just is that way, sometimes. 🤷♀️
Kit had mental issues. She blamed everything on her sister. 🙄 I didn't like her.
Exactly. People need to learn to not be jealous, just get better.
100% for my part Kit, though slightly sympathetic, is one of the villains of the story. The sympathy is given by Dottie, who though she can't help give into the sibling ribbing, which Kit takes too serouslu die tonher insane jelousy,, loves her sister more than Kit can see, again due to her jealousy.
Lol, been watching this movie since thw 80s, and I still can't get with Kit. She's such a whiney, weak, brat throughout. If she had simply relaxed, she would have been a much better player and sister. She's one of my least favorite film characters of all time. I get yin&yan but she was WAY too much for this cinephile. 😆
I'm with you. Maybe I can't relate because I don't have siblings but Kit always got on my nerves!
Kit is a whiner. I have no sympathy for her. If she's being over-shadowed, be better. That should've been motivation, not an excuse. Not a fan.
Dottie wasn’t being a sore loser, she just knew she would overshadow kit if she stayed, so she pretended to not care so kit could have it. She had a husband and prospects for a family, and kit didn’t. She knew she needed it more.
I sign everything “Avoid the clap, Jimmy Duggan”.
Hahahahahaha
28:50
I bet you both have older siblings.
Dottie is doing EVERYTHING for Kit.
She wouldnt even go to the league, Kit wanting to go is the only reason she did.
I totaly get why Kit feels so left behind, I really do...
But its not Dotties fault.
Shes doing everything she can to level out the playing field.
Not backing Kit up i this situation was a purely "Whats best for the game" situation.
It was not personal in anyway, 1% personal in this situation and Dottie wouldve pushed for Kit to stay in the game.
Im the oldest of my siblings.
I tried for *_decades_* to encouage my brother, to cheer him on in his sucesses.
He still hated me cuz I was better.
Didnt matter that whatever we did I had done it 2 years longer than he had.
The fact that i was "better" at it made him quit and hate me.
Some things he was WAY better at if comparing him at 6 months and me at 6 months.
But since I had years head start I was still better right there and then compared to him.
Younger siblings think its so easy to be the other one...
Its not, its like being a father (or in this case mother) to them, you WANT to be their frined, you WANT them to succeed, but all you get back is jealousy and hate.
Its the hardest thing Ive ever had to deal with, including my parents dying.
My brother hating me fo "being better" when all I wanted was for him to succeed is the worst thing Ive ever had to deal with... still to this day.
EDIT:
BTW, Dottie 100% let that last ball go on purpose.
The scene where he hits the kid in the face with the mitt was my absolute favorite when I was a kid. Still makes me laugh.
Still makes me laugh too. Would had felt so good lol. Not advocating child abuse
It was pouring rain. That's why they held the tryouts in the gym.
Never even clocked Madonna. Man times have changed.
I'm not sure our guys even knew that was Madonna when watching.
Yes, but her name is one of the first names to appear on screen along with Tom Hanks and Geena Davis during the initial credits. These guys don't even read the words on screen. It's not about times changing, it's about lacking attention.
Yes, the end credits of the 1992 movie A League of Their Own show real women from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) playing in a reunion game. The movie is a fictionalized account of the league, which ran from 1943 to 1954.

You guys left out my two favorite lines from this movie, although I'll admit they aren't inspirational quotes: "That's some good peein' " and "Avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan"
Jon Lovitz steals every scene he's in.
Didn't recognize Madonna, the 6th top selling musical artist of all time.
Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell actually became BFF's during the filming of this movie. Largely because both Madonna and Rosie came from similar backgrounds
12:00 not me!! That’s Rosie and Madonna. 😊
I live in Racine and we have cool stuff from this era in our museum. It's really awesome. Go Belles!!
There is dialogue in which Shirley Baker is asked by the team member if she can read, and she shakes her head. It is right there.
Jon Lovitz had a famous line whenever he he told a whopper: “…yeah, THAT’S the ticket.”
Morgan Fairchild!😂
His dancing would have me in tears growing up!
“What’re you looking for the exit”😂😅 had me crying
This is a super rewatchable film. Also, if you’re flipping through TV channels and this is on, it’s a good movie to watch from any point.
The husband is played by Bill Pullman, the president in ID4
I like your empathy. I, too, wish we still danced like that. 8:14
Love how into this movie you guys got. By the last game you were definitely fans of the sport
John Lovitz perfectly adds humor to what could have been a very boring start to the movie.
This is definitely my favorite baseball movie
I don't know if you noticed but Madonna was in the movie. She played the character Mae. And that was why she was able to dance so well in that scene in the club.
Me and Madonna are the same age. Hard to believe we both turned 65yrs-old last year. This is my favorite Madonna movie where she dropped her persona and looked like a real woman.
Dottie dropped the ball on purpose so Kit could win.
1000%
I've seen this movie so many times, and I still can't get through the final scenes without tearing up.
You all didn't even notice that Madonna was in this movie. She was 'Mae", the one smoking on the ballfield and dancing in that club, and her friend was "Doris", played by Rosie O'Donnell. In real life, I'm not sure about now, but back then, Madonna and Rosie were best friends. The first inaugural season of the AAGPBL began in 1943. There was no such thing as "sexual harassment" laws during that time. As a matter of fact, It wasn't until 1980 that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) actually issued regulations defining sexual harassment in the workplace and stating it was a form of sex discrimination prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I was 23 years old in 1980 and began working in 1975. My personal experience in my first 5 years of working before there were laws to protect against sexual harassment were rampant with that kind of behavior. Women have made great strides over the years, and I really appreciate the empathy you showed for the treatment of those women. Your Mamas raised you right! Thanks for a great reaction, guys! ✌💙✌
I have always thought Dottie dropped that last ball on purpose. She is way too good of a player to have dropped that ball. She knew it would break down her sister even more if she beat her yet again. For Dottie, it wasn't important enough to damage her relationship with Kit.
You're so young you didn't know besides the main characters Madonna and Rosie O' Donnell were also here. One of my favorite movies, a tear jerker in a few scenes... And my understanding is that all women playing during the credits were the actual women from the All American Girl Professional Baseball League Hall of Fame.
There was nobody more convincing as a 1940's American than Jon Lovitz the other was Phil Hartman RIP
One of many reasons they were such good buddies! ❤️🎬
Thanks! Really great reactions from both of you. Keep up the great work
17:46 how did you miss the bus driver throwing dirt in her face? That’s why her face looks like that.
Having both older and younger sisters, this movie is so relatable to me. Most reactors don't seem to empathize with Kit very much so it's nice to see people take her side a bit more. It isn't Dottie's fault that Kit is jealous, but when you're an older sister, if you value your relationship with your younger sister, you can't ignore her emotions as they relate to you. You have a responsibility to deal with them, especially when they are founded in actual unfair treatment.
Have you guys seen “Field of Dreams”? If not it’s an absolute must!
Love this movie. However guys, geena davis is an icon, legendary status. Academy award winner. Most famous & iconic role is in Thelma & Louise. College courses are/were designed around this movie/dynamic between the two characters. Geena got an academy award nomination for it. And Brad Pitt’s first role. It’s a must see.
In college? For real? Lol 🤦🏻♀️
🏆 The best *Geena Davis* movie is still THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST (1988) which she did win an Academy Award for.
@@Avalee325: 😉 Yes, also college courses based on Keanu Reeves movies and Taylor Swift songs.
So glad you watched this one. One of my favorite movies. "Miracle" with Kurt Russel is another one of mine. Loved your reaction and your wit during it.
The AAGPBL was a real thing. Lasted for 11 years. The characters in the movie are fictional but based off real people. The movie is pretty accurate like Racine did win the first World Series. The league really opened the door for women’s professional sports in the US.
I played softball in high school and college and when we had team parties or sleepovers we always watched this movie. It’s so great.
Hey guys, really liked this reaction.😊 I enjoy watching reactions to this movie because it is one of my favorites. So, of course, I had to watch yours. The All American Girls Professional Baseball League lasted for 12 Seasons (1943-1954) The actual man that founded it was Philip K. Wrigley, the chewing gum mogul. Tryouts were held @ Wrigley Field in Chicago.
The 1st year, the women were only chosen by scouts from a local softball league, but expanded later to other softball leagues. Wrigley wanted the teams to by in locations that were reasonable travel distance to Chicago so it was considered a Midwestern League. The names of the teams in the movie were actual team names.
Wrigley owned the League from 1943-1945. In 1945, ownership went to wealthy publicist Arthur Meyerhoff. He owned the League from 1945-1951. From 1951-1954, the teams owned themselves.
The game that the women played was a hybrid of softball & baseball. For the 1st few Seasons they played something closer to underhand fast pitch softball. The distance between the pitcher's mound & home plate was shortened by 20ft & the distance between bases was shortened by 25ft. In 1948, they started pitching overhand, the ball went from 12" in circumference to 10 3/8" which was still larger than the regulation baseball @ 9" or 9 1/4", the distance between the pitcher's mound & home plate was lengthened by 10ft. During their final Season in 1954, they played with a regulation baseball, the distance between the mound & home was standard & the distance between bases was moved to 5ft shy of standard. Former Major League players usually managed the teams. During the early years, the women were paid $45-$85 a week (2023 equivalent is $792-$1,497 a week.) which was well above average for women @the time. The varying pay was dependent on your skills as a player.
The women did have to attend Charm School. They were ladies after all. They had to follow Rules of Conduct which were: no short hair, no smoking/drinking alcohol in public places, no pants & they must wear lipstick @ all times. Getting caught breaking those rules would result in:
$5 fine for 1st offense.
$10 fine for 2nd
Suspension for 3rd.
One player was fired for cutting her hair short.
The League Theme song they sing in the movie is the actual Theme song with one minor change, instead of "Irish men" they say "Irish ones".
Even though I don't know if u r going to read this, I just wanted to drop some knowledge.😊
I think the reason dancing was higher quality back then is because there weren’t a lot of entertainment options. No video games, no social media, no streaming. It was movies or dancing.
Also, no dating apps and speed dating wasn’t common. So dancing was a good way to meet boys/girls without your parents setting you up.
41:23 - You think she didn’t drop that ball on purpose, seriously? 😂 She has had the grip of the hulk the entire game. Sometimes you have to let things go.
Madonna’s character all the way May was based on a real players name, I dunno if she acted the way Madonna played her 🤣 that might have just been Madonna shining through, but I remember reading about the actual league and there was a woman named all the way May
The real Mae recently came out as a lesbian. The times made it impossible to come out safely.
“What happened to her face?”
The bus driver threw dirt on her while you guys were talking for like 30 seconds straight
I'm glad you didn't lose your home Zay :)
Cam and Zay make a lot of jokes, but they clearly have big hearts. 🧡💫🧡
The swing dancer in the black dress with the design on it is Madonna. She was offered a dance scholarship from the University of Michigan and turned it down because she wanted to become a famous singer instead.
Y’all need to start paying attention to the movie. You talked through so many things that would’ve been answered if you hadn’t been talking.
You can visit some of the ballfields where it was filmed in Indiana
13:02 yeah dude, she literally asks the girl if she can read and the girl says no. Y’all must not have heard it over your Jon Levitz impression.
Ah yes, the highest grossing baseball film of all time. That's right.
I've seen this so many times and couldn't care less about Kit. I don't like jealous people, especially when they're jealous of natural talent.
This is one of my faves! SO glad you're watching this. I still think Dottie dropped that ball on purpose at the end. The scene where the Black woman throws the ball is their way to acknowledge that the league was segregated. There were 2 women who played in the Negro Leagues. I had the pleasure of meeting Mamie "Peanut" Johnson (I think she played for the "Indianapolis Clowns") when there was a Negro League Baseball store in Maryland.
That's amazing!!
Some of the people were loosely based on real people in the league. Jimmy Dugan was loosely based on Jimmie Foxx and Hack Wilson, who both had superstar careers shortened by injury and alcohol. Geena Davis has a striking resemblence to Dottie Green, but was actually loosely based on Green's teammate, Dottie Kamenshek.
Fun fact: former Major League Baseball player Casey Candaele was the son of AAGPBL star Helen Candaele, who was league batting champ in 1945, and stole over 400 bases in a 6 year career.
The fact that you don’t have siblings and yet you described exactly what a sibling would do in that situation(tripping the other to win) let’s me know you definitely have what it takes to be a sibling, lmao! Oldest of 5 girls and we watched this movie so much together. We were also ruthless with each other when it came to competition. No mercy!!!!
Been watching you guys for a while now. You're a hoot! Some recommendations: Like someone below said, "The 'Burbs" with Tom Hanks is great. It's my favorite movie of his. It's like this movie in that it's really rewatchable. Also, "The Quick and the Dead" is great. You might also react to "Rope," "Glory," "Lincoln," "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Father of the Bride" (the Steve Martin remake from 1991). A diverse group of movies mixing comedy and drama, but they're all great.
Are they just pretending not to Recognise Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna?
Nope..I'm sure they didn't notice.
You gotta realize their age. They probably don’t recognize them
@kenyonsgirl415 true.
@kenyonsgirl415 Rosy and Madonna have stayed relevant the entire time they were growing up. Rosie O'donnell has been on television and movies Including all the late night Talk shows While Madonna has continued to tour. She spent the whole Fall and winter on tour and her tour is still ongoing. Their voices sound practically identical to what they sounded like when this movie was made.

17:45 bro, yall need to pause in between jokes or something, or rewind after talking a bit. The bus driver threw dirt in her face when she tried to get him not to quit.
This is a Penny Marshall film, she played Laverne in the Sitcom Laverne and Shirley. Mr. Harvey was played by Penny Marshall's Brother Garry Marshall. The guy dancing with Madonna (All The Way May) was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl. The horrible Bruise was real and took over a year to heal. The older players were actual members of the American Professional Girls Baseball League.
Oh, sh*t, I didn't know that was The Big Ragu dancing in that scene!! I recognized Squiggy immediately 😆
Shirley Baker, the one who learns to read, is John and Joan Cusack's sister, Ann Cusack.
“Thelma and Louise.” Geena Davis, young Brad Pitt’s debut. Must see!
Characters don't always have to change. Dottie was a lot more evolved from the beginning. But she did decide to leave and then come back, besides being the catalyst for change in other characters.
One of the military men in the bar dancing with one of the girls is the late Eddie Mekka. Eddie co-starred with Penny Marshall in the hit TV series, "Laverne and Shirley" as Carmine "The Big Ragu" Ragusa. Carmine was an aspiring boxer who was also a dancer and singer. He and Shirley (Cindy William) had a relationship at the beginning of the series. "Laverne and Shirley" was a spin off of the hit series "Happy Day", both of which was produced by Penny Marshall's brother, Garry, who plays Mr. Harvey in this movie.
The field the Peaches played on is still there in Rockford, IL and was recently renovated.
17:23
The bus driver that quit threw dirt in the ladies face. That's why half her face is dark.
Pay attention.
You two I guessed talk over somethings because you world ask what something was right after it was already explained. And the people who suggested and voted for this movie didn't tell you it was based on a true story or real life events?
It's always interesting to me of the people who feel for Kit. She is such a spoiled brat. Lol! Then dottie gave her the win because she was sick a baby. I'm a sport purest. You either earn it or you don't. Lol Dottie let the ball go on purpose. They made a point to signal that result in the movie. Remember how they made a point to show that dottie held on to the ball earlier AFTER getting hit.
Dottie also left because of kit. Kit cried and got everything handed to her.
And yes the older women at the end age the real women that played and who some of the characters were based off and they did change their names.
I'm glad you guys watched this movie this wanna my favorite sports movies this wanna my favorite reactions from you guys.
LMAO! Cam watching the butterflies in the outfield had me cracking up.
27:18 Absolutely this is based on truth. A few years ago I took an AAGPBL road trip to find all the original fields these girls played at starting at Beyer Stadium in Rockford and the Museum.
The girl that said "DO IT'", chased the brat with the bat and danced at the Suds Bucket is no other than the icon Madonna.
Back then, dancing was HUGE. Everyone learned it from one another. Nowadays you'd have to go to a dance studio (ala Arthur Murray) and pay for classes.
But the real question is... did Dotty drop the ball? Or did she drop.. the ... ball...
You definitely need to see more Geena Davis movies.
Women did a lot of jobs during WWII, not just baseball. They worked in factories, made airplanes and even flew the airplanes to deliver them. When the war ended, they were all expected to go back to be housewives. The men needed the jobs since they were the breadwinners of the family. Sexual harassment was common and considered acceptable. That was the culture at the time. Women have fought for years to be accepted as equals. We’ve made a lot of progress, but there’s still a ways to go- Deb
Dottie was more into home and family. She loved the sister fiercely but Kit couldn't see it.
Garry Marshall plays Mr. Harvey, a successful business man who bankrolls the Women's League. Ira Levinson, the tall thin man with glasses who communicates with the team (and is played by David Strathairn) is employed by Harvey. I believe it was explained early in the script.
Garry Marshall, by the way, was a famous producer/director/actor. He is the father of Penny Marshall, the director of this movie, and who was also an actress, especially popular as a recurring character in "The Odd Couple" series and as a lead in "Laverne and Shirley", where she played Laverne.
He's Penny Marshall's brother, not her father.

You're missing the subtext. Dottie let go of the ball, she intentionally lost to give Kit a win, and so she could leave with dignity. ❤️🎬
A lot of people miss that!
I think that's debatable.
