      My favorite part is always when Kit waves to the crowd at the end. Utter fulfillment of her dreams. Seeing that much joy and Dottie looking on sharing in her sister's joy equals tears every time. I had such the biggest crush on the Kit character after seeing this in the movie theater opening night. My issue with the movie's story is that Marla and Nelson should have just got married in the off-season. Jimmy even says Marla is their best hitter. No way the Peaches would have lost the series with Marla in the line up. Movie has got to movie, i guess. Peaches were just so op even after losing two key players, Marla & Kit. The trade and allowance of the wedding was probably to balance the teams that were gonna be in the finals. Otherwise it wouldn't have been not as exciting to just have the Peaches crush whoever they faced in the finals. If you were gonna trade a catcher or a pitcher to an inferior team the pitcher would be the best choice. Kit should have been proud of herself for being more valuable to the other team. When you trade players like that you go with what you need and the overall better fit. Dottie says, "I told them to trade me..." Sure but Lowenstein probably talked to the other coach and he was like, "Dottie? No we have a good catcher. What we really need is a Pitcher and Kit will make us a better team. So... give us Kit." It would have been easy if a deleted scene or writer added a conversation from the coach to Kit. Acting like a better father to her than her own. "Kit, you know why you are on this team?" -Cuz, Dottie told Lowenstein to trade me." "That is how it started but I chose you. You are what this team needs. We don't need Dottie. We need you. With you we are gonna win!" *Kit looks up at the coach and sees the genuine truth of his words and she hugs him with the love that a daughter might have for her proud father.*
      Well, that is how I think of it in my head-cannon, anyways. Thank for the reaction! I love this movie too!

      I'm not sure I can pick a favorite scene. It's one of those rare movies where I like every scene. The movie never drags for me. But I do love the montage scenes. And also Jimmy's line when Dottie is planning to leave: "If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."

    You know, a lot of people rag on Kit, but I've always thought, "This is our daughter Dottie. This is our other daughter, Dottie's sister" was such a raw take on the damaging effects of favoritism. Kit isn't a very good person don't get me wrong, but she's definitely like that because of treatment growing up, in that I have no doubt.

      I don't think it's about Kit being a bad person. This was a time where the only expectation for a woman was to get married and have a family. Kit feels trapped in her small town, in the shadow of an older and already married sister. She just wants more than is expected of her. Then she finally gets to a place where she has the potential for more and feels overshadowed by her sister again. I think a part of Dottie wanted more too. She acts like she's only doing it for Kit but she came back in the end not for Kit but for herself because she did truly love it.

    Being the younger sibling to a golden child 🙈 I totally get Kit. I know a lot of people hate her character, which I’ll admit she is a bit whiny, but she’s always trying to prove herself worthy and be seen for something other than “that other daughter”. It always breaks me when Kit says “when you’re here, I’m not here” and then at the end when she questions why Dottie would miss her. She doesn’t feel like anyone would really care about her, even her sister who’s shown her she does care. It really messes with your head.

    Great reaction video! I loved this movie growing up. I just hated the ending. I was the opposite of you. I didn’t want Kit to win so the end was a big let down for me.
    I hated that Dottie was made to feel bad and treated like crap by Kit just because she was talented. To me it felt sad to see such a strong and talented woman trying to figure out how to be a married woman and do what was expected of her back then and having ambition. I liked that she came back for herself and the team but Kit winning after all her bratty, selfish nonsense was a let down.
    I think it bugs me so much because it’s a fake movie emulating what is happening in modern day. These days it’s all about everyone’s feelings and cutting down those who do well and succeed just to make sure the less talented, less driven and less ambitious don’t feel bad. It’s gross and wrong! The answer should be to do more, try harder, practice whatever it is, put in 100% of your blood sweat and tears and you will succeed. Not to try to diminish others just to make yourself look or feel better.

    When I first saw this movie I was inspired to research the actual Girl's Professional Baseball League, and what I found out convinced me that these women deserve to be more than a footnote in the Baseball Hall of Fame. They deserve to be recognized as equals to the male players.
    Of special note for me are Jean Faut and Sophie Kurys.
    Faut was a pitcher, and she did something no other professional pitcher in history has ever done: pitched two perfect games. In addition, she pitched two one-hitters, meaning she nearly pitched FOUR perfect games. No male pitcher has ever come close to that record.
    Kurt's, on the other hand, was a shortstop, and her claim to fame was stealing bases. During her eight years as a professional baseball player, she stole more bases than any males player in history... but because professional baseball doesn't count the GPBL as "real" professional baseball, her record never counted.
    And - if you will please excuse my language - that is a fucking crime.

    "There's no crying in baseball!"
    I love Lori Petty. It is a shame she did a number of bad movies (not this one) and fell off the map. Tank Girl (1995) was her at her best, even if the rest of the movie was a disaster.
    Fun Fact: Geena Davis really does catch a pop up behind her back. It was supposed to be done by a stunt double, but the double was having trouble. So Davis gave it a go and, well, you've seen the result.
    Sweet Karma Fact: After they bring out the Peaches for their first game, and announce all of them, they run out on the field. In the background, you can see Rosie O'Donnell trip over a wire and fall down.
    Historical Fact: The film portrays the league as initially unpopular and unprofitable, until demeaning gimmicks are used to attract male audiences. In reality, the league was popular and profitable from the start, largely because it played in towns in the upper Midwest that had no way of watching a live baseball game. Eventually, the league grew into a ten-team two-division league. The advent of televised baseball games in the early fifties, however, would lead to the demise in the popularity of the league. The storyline was inspired by the career of baseball legend Dottie Collins. During World War II, Collins played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and pitched seventeen shutouts during her six-year career.

    Great choice - IMO very underrated - the late Penny Marshall had the gift for comedy and heart and it shows in plenty here with this true life account and great star turns (and yes Lori Petty should be a bigger star; she's excellent here). FYI: the older versions of the characters are older actresses and not the stars in old-age make-up; amazing they found them to look and act like their counterparts. Nice job Chris.

      That's the one thing I never liked about this movie. She robbed herself and her team of the win to pacify and baby her younger sister. A girl a lot bigger than her barreled into her earlier in the film and she kept the ball but little Kit made her drop it? Nah.

    • @michaeljacyna1973
      @michaeljacyna1973 2 года назад +5

      @@SMiles.21 I believe it was on purpose. And I agree with you, it seems a bit selfish to throw the series.... but playing Devils Advocate, one could argue that taking a step into repairing her relationship with her sister and giving Kit the feeling of an earned victory was more important than the team win. You know, family first and all that...

    • @allison4516
      @allison4516 2 года назад +1

      I think she dropped it on purpose. But it wasn’t done selfishly or maliciously. Dottie simply loved her sister and cared about the mental health of her sister more then the game. Her love for her sister was established throughout the movie, as was her outlook that baseball was just a game that she played and not as important to her as to others. It’s not out of character at all that she would drop the ball to give Kit that moment, that confidence, which would help her long term in her life. If she’d held onto the ball, who knows how that would have impacted Kit’s life trajectory. At the end, Dottie was doing what big sisters do. Look after their siblings. It’s a fitting ending for the character.

To varying degrees they stayed active in dance, even if that wasn't in a dancing capacity. Remember... Tom Hanks really had to fight for the role of Jimmy Duggan. No one at the studio wanted him as he was known mostly for romantic comedy roles at the time. They wanted someone like Tommy Lee Jones. Hanks went to good friend, and director of film, Penny Marshall and said, "What if Jimmy was a younger guy who still could be playing, but messed it all up?" (an idea that was not in the original script). Marshall was moved by the idea and decided to convince the studio that Hanks was the right man for the role.
