How to Break Glass with Your Voice - Hard Science

    Michael Thurber of cdza joins Tara and Anthony as they attempt to break glass with the human voice. Will Michael's vocal cords be enough to get the job done? Watch to find out!
    Experiment Tips:
    - Place a straw inside the glass. When the straw starts to bounce around your voice has reached the natural frequency of the glass.
    - Leaded, crystal glasses work best for this experiment because they are more delicate.
    - A horn driver helps center the sound in one place.

    The glass needs to contain a small flaw. The shattering starts with this small crack. The blemish can be too small to be seen by the naked eye.

    • @briankiprono4580
      @briankiprono4580 8 лет назад +3

      no its not from experience and theory,as i said earlier there is brownian which states that all matter exists in a constant random motion at the molecular level ,whaat happens when you heat a tin glass like that it cracks if not break,because the increase in temp made the particles to vibrate faster than the normal rate,same applies to sound if it can make it vibrate faster than normal

      To me, it's a failure. They were supposed to break the glass with their voice, not with a powerful amplifier. Too easy this way, and doesn't prove anything because it's OBVIOUS that such a strong vibration from a powerful amplifier with a directional speaker would make it. The whole point of the experiment should have been doing it with their voice and no electric amplification at all. Maybe they could have used the reverb of an auditorium to achieve some degree of amplification to their "natural" decibel level. ;)

    Honestly I'm an Opera singer and thats just wrong to cheat on so many levels. You want to prove your voice can break the glass then actually prove it with your voice not with a devise that directs the sound right into the glass and instead of using one that already has a crack use a new one. I have done it and it is possible. You just have to hit the right note. And if you cheat then your not setting a good example for those who want to break glass with their voice. Your showing them an easy way out.

I watched a documentary wherein a male with very high vocal range and a soprano coloratura from the philippine madrigal singers tried to use their voices to break a glass..They tried singing directly through the glass, used amplifiers to make the sound louder and a device that directly puts the sound to the glass. They tried evreything but didn't work tho.

    You have to match to resonant frequency of the glass and sing it loudly enough to basically vibrate the glass to death

  • @Garreista

    Would this work with noise too? White noise is all frequencies at the same time and roughly the same level with constant variation. If you had a handful of glasses on a table, could you break all of them at one time with white noise projected at 100db?

    the title is false then, is with your voice...not your voice plus a bunch of amplifiers things. which make it silly.

    I watched this with the volume down just in case. Didn't want all the glass in my house to start shattering.
