Stax, you can't imagine how important this song was to raps growth and longevity. It is literally the foundation of rap crossing over and going worldwide. The bars are on point, the story telling in between is nothing short of sensational, and, as you mentioned, the breath control is masterful. Anybody that grew up when this came out (I was 7 going on 8) can recite at least 95% of this version and the extended version. Its often overlooked but it's one of the most important songs in hip hop history.

Old school hip hop. This was late '70s, early '80s.
Lot of early rap used disco and funk beats. Because that was the music of the era back then. '70s and '80s. Dance vibes. Lot of their music played at dance parties, skating rinks, wedding parties, movies, etc. And sampled on later years rap and R&B songs. Check out "Apache (Jump on It)" video next!

Yes this song hits mainstream. I think it was at the early 80's at the age of 12/13 when i first heard this song. I was obssesed to know all the words of the 15 minute version of this song. Can you imagine how often i run this song as a german at this young age to know them all. Great memories

This song was a revelation. I was in middle school when it came out. We'd have to take our tape recorder and wait til it came on the radio and hit record. I was 20 years old when this was released in 1979. This caused a major change in the music of the coming 80s. My club scene days of that time was off-the-chain🎵💃🤗😍

This is the first rap song I heard in college in 1979. Fun fact, at dance they started with Good Times by Chic and then mixed this in and I thought, the dj sure is talking a long time 😄. I didn't have a clue. Later, my sisters and I played the extended version and wrote every word down. Still know them. Good Times.

My daughter does cross-stitching (basically making pictures and stuff out of little x's on special fabric) and she usually makes everyone in our family one for Christmas. I have quite a few now, one of which is a 5x7 piece of fabric with block letters 4x6 filling it, and it's that "ISAIDAHIPHOPTHEHIBBYTOTHEHIBBYTO..." that he did at the end. Haha!
(I also have one that looks like a traditional 'sampler', lovely little border top and bottom, a couple of tulips on the sides, and it says "Shimmy ya, shimmy yam, shimmy yay, gimme the mic so I can take it away", LOL!)

This song is not where the term Hip Hop comes from it's just the song that made the term popular with mainstream America. The term Hip-Hop was created by Keef Cowboy of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of soldiers marching. He later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance. Lovebug Starski, Keef Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap.
Those first lines in Rapper's Delight were taken directly from Cowboy. In fact the words hip and hop being used together can be traced back to the 1950's. In those days teen house parties were referred to by older people as hippity hops.

I was looking for a comment like this, A real nod has to be made to the funk bands that inspired this style of early hip hop. Songs like Mistadobalina are entirely cuts of other tracks. Stax, if you wanna dig into the influence rabbithole, i suggest: parliment funkadelic, sly and the family stone, booker T and the MG's Etc.

Lots of history to this song. They took Grandmaster Caz's rhyme book and used his rhymes without crediting him. Big Bank Hank didn't even change the lyrics. In this song he says he is Casanova Fly . . . that is Grandmaster Caz's other name. If you want a response to this song--MC Delight by Grandmaster Caz. On top of this, Hank says--he is the grandmaster with the 3 MCs. There are only 3 MCs in Sugarhill Gang, he didn't even change that.

I have loved this right from 1979 and through to today. And that funky bass line is copied from the superb Bernard Edwards bass line from Good Times, by Chic.
