Flying Low & Slow to Key West - Part II

  • In part two we are going to fly from Palm Beach all the way to Key West. Learn about the shore line transition in Fort Lauderdale (but don't make the mistake I made!), enjoy the views of Miami, and then come with us as we fly from Key Biscayne along the many small islands to Key West International Airport.
    Special thanks to my friend Gilbert who was capturing video from the right seat.

    Great video, as always, Martin. In addition to the great views, I always appreciate your great radio work (keeps me mentally sharp when I can’t get in the air as often as I’d like) and when you narrate complicated airspace issues or comm breakdowns. Always a learning experience. Thanks!

    Of course, sitting at home I caught the transmission correction. But I also I heard part of a transmission earlier to change to 119.3 which I thought was meant for you. Can be tough when it gets that busy, especially with terrain warnings blaring constantly!

      Hi David,
      Loss of an engine would likely have resulted in getting wet on this flight, and we did carry life vests. I actually got more nervous on the way back north where for half an hour I flew over the Everglades - beautiful sights, but given a choice I'd take a waterlanding in the Florida Bay over Alligator-infested swamps.

    Martin, little late watching this video. Question: On the VFR corridor, what would you have had to do if you were not able to reach Ft. Lauderdale approach? I am guessing you would have not essentially been cleared and would have had to fly out further under the outer shelf and just stay below 1200?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад +1

      That's exactly right, Stevie. A few miles off-shore, under the Class Charlie shelf would have been the way to go. An alternative could be to do 360s before entering their airspace while trying to make contact.
      - Martin

  • @Joe_Not_A_Fed
    @Joe_Not_A_Fed 2 года назад +1

    There's no place like the Keys. Great flight and an excellent example of VFR radio work in congested airspace. I'm curious...was it because of sketchy radar coverage that you didn't (or didn't seem to) have continuous flight following to Key West? Also...after more time with your Axis headset, are you still liking it better than the Halo's? Thanks for sharing.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад +1

      Hi Joe. I figured flight following wouldn't work well as low as I was flying much of the time (500' in some places). For example, to even reach Orlando Approach prior to entering the Kennedy Space Center area, I had to climb to about 2,000. So I decided it'll be easier if I proceed without flight following for this flight. It's not what I normally do, but then normally I fly much higher.

      Martin

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад

      Yes, Marc - I see no airspace in that area which requires talking to Approach, so you could just get with Tower when you are closer. However, it seemed prudent to work with Approach for flight following/traffic advisories.

(They said 0-9-0, and I heard 1-9-0 because I was expecting it) Later I heard a recording and it was clearly my error. Its a creepy feeling but a very good learning moment, and now I am hyper-aware of what Im hearing and not what Im expecting.

    Martin, I’m curious as to why you didn’t pick up VFR Flight Following for this trip. Given the number of airspace transitions you made, I would think this would have reduced your workload considerably…?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад +2

      Good question, James. Maybe it would have helped. From my experience, what Flight Following can do depends a bit on the region. Not having flown much in Florida, I wouldn't know what the limits of FF are, whereas doing it all myself - while more work - made it more predictable. Also, at some of those altitudes we were flying at I would not have been able to remain in radio contact with ATC.
      Regards,
      Martin

    • @jcijr14
      @jcijr14 2 года назад

      @@martinpauly Flight Following in Florida is very helpful when VFR which I recommend most of the time when flying down here in our category of aircraft. My experience has been that controllers give you almost unlimited flexibility regarding heading/altitude, reliably call out traffic, and will work with you to coordinate airspace transitions. You get treated almost like IFR aircraft minus the constraints associated with IFR.
